A man has been arrested after handing himself in to police following the death of two cyclists in Bristol who were in a collision with a car.

The crash happened on Lower Hanham Road, Hanham, just before 16:00 GMT.

Avon and Somerset police earlier said the driver of a Citroen had abandoned their car and fled the scene.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said the cyclists - a man and a woman - both had fatal injuries and "were beyond help at the scene".

A spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "The road currently remains closed and investigations continue."

Police are appealing for witnesses.

The Great Western Ambulance Service spokeswoman said an ambulance, paramedics, and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene.
