Adam Walton meets freshwater ecologist and chairman of the RSPB, Prof Steve Ormerod, to discuss conservation, environmental change and a lifelong fascination with birds.

This week’s programme finds Adam Walton in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains near Llyn Brianne at the RSPB’s Gwenffrwd-Dinas Reserve. He’s there to meet one of Wales’ most passionate and influential advocates for wildlife.
Dr. Steve Ormerod is Professor of Ecology at Cardiff University’s School of Biosciences and he’s one of the foremost freshwater ecologists of his generation. His research has revealed the impact of acid rain, pollution and climate change on river and lake ecosystems. He’s also an expert on some of our iconic freshwater bird species like dippers and kingfishers.
Steve is also closely involved in policy-making. Steve has been on the Councils of the Freshwater Biological Association, the Countryside Council for Wales, the Rivers Trust and the British Trust for Ornithology. In 2012 he was elected Chairman of the RSPB and in this week’s programme Adam talks to Steve about his career and research, his scientific influences and his role at the forefront of one of the UK’s biggest conservation charities.
