Kaleidoscopic joy

Punk sensibilities, grunge guitars and earnest melodies form the building blocks of The Smashing Pumpkins' impressive repertoire. Formed in Chicago in 1988, they've gone on to sell more than 30 million albums, with notable highlights including debut Gish and 1995's Grammy nominated Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness.

Despite turbulent events within the band, their success and critical recognition has been unwavering with Billy Corgan's pleading vocals the anchor that keeps them as one of the most important touch points in alt-rock. He's since ventured in to opening a tea shop, Madame ZuZu in Chicago, and becoming a wrestling promoter, but continues to make music as 2012 release Oceania testifies.

Rumours abound promising more of their unchallenged sound - an absorbing mix of angst and orchestral lullabies - and are sure to sound mesmerising against the green green fields of Glastonbury
