Whitney Houston's ex-husband Bobby Brown attended her funeral on Saturday (20 February) but reportedly left early after a disagreement over seating arrangements.

The couple were married for 15 years and have a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, together.

Brown released a statement after the funeral claiming he wasn't allowed to sit next to Kristina during the service.

He said: "Security prevented me from attempting to see my daughter. In light of the events, I departed as I refused to create a scene."

Newsbeat has a look back over Brown's career.

'My Prerogative'

Bobby Brown was born in 1969 and first found fame as a child star.

At the age of 9, Brown joined R&B boyband New Edition and they released their debut album Candy Girl in 1983.

Their debut single of the same name topped the charts in the UK, but that was their only song to ever enter the top 10.

The group recorded three albums before Brown left to begin a solo career - releasing his debut album King Of Stage in 1986.

But he didn't have chart success as a solo artist until 1988, with the release of his second album Don't Be Cruel.

The album featured the single My Prerogative, which was Brown's first hit single in the UK. The song was later covered by Britney Spears.

Brown's highest-charting single in the UK to date is Two Can Play That Game, which reached number three in April 1995.

Marriage controversy

The singer married Whitney Houston in 1992, and their daughter Bobbi Kristina was born a year later.

But their marriage became the subject of controversy after rumours of drug abuse and physical violence.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey three years ago, Whitney claimed she and Brown regularly took drugs together, with her husband's drug of choice being "marijuana laced with cocaine".

In the same interview, Houston revealed they had also physically attacked each other.

The couple divorced in 2007 and Brown has since become engaged to Alicia Etheridge, with whom he has a son.

New Edition

Brown recently reformed with New Edition for a series of live shows.

The band were on tour in Mississippi when news of Whitney Houston's death broke.

The singer was found dead in her hotel room in Los Angeles the night before the Grammy Awards. She was 48.

New Edition decided to go ahead with a planned concert in Southaven that evening, during which Brown paid tribute to his ex-wife on stage.

"I love you Whitney," he said while blowing a kiss towards the sky.

In a statement, the band said they were "absolutely shocked and saddened" by Whitney's death.
