Narcoland author Hernandez 'living in fear' in Mexico

In the first nine months of this year, 37 journalists have been murdered in Mexico.

Annabel Hernandez - whose own father was kidnapped and murdered by a criminal gang in the country - has spent years investigating the county's warring drug cartels, and their often corrupt relationships with people in power.

Her book on the subject, Narcoland, has just been published.

She told the the Today programme's reporter Tom Bateman about her father's death and how she felt let down by Mexican police, deciding to investigate herself.

"We don't know what happened and we don't know who killed my father.

Since the start of her investigations, and as a result of publishing the names of officials she believed to be corrupt, she has been "living in fear of her life" but is determined to carry on.

"I believe that good journalists can change the story of a country," she added.

"I just can't run away from Mexico. I have lost the most important thing to me - my father - I can't stop."

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 2 October 2013.
