  1. Post update

And so, it's time for an emotional farewell after a brief reflection on another big statement from South Africa.

Five of their batsmen have now scored centuries at this tournament, while Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw have proved more than able replacements for the recovering Vernon Philander and JP Duminy.

The attack looks in good working order too, although there remains a question mark over the fifth bowler and they can be sure that the better teams in the tournament will exploit any weakness.

As for Ireland, they really shouldn't dwell on this for too long. A quick dust down and then straight into prep mode for Zimbabwe on Saturday.

As for us, we'll be back at about 00:30 GMT on Wednesday for Pakistan-UAE, with Australia-Afghanistan kicking off at 06:30. Toodle-pip.

JdeSatge: South Africa to cruise to victory here, but their inability to wrap up the tail quickly will come back to haunt them vs better opposition.

Ed Fondue: Plusses: Spinners, Balbirnie & Dockrell highest ODI scores, K O'Brien. Minuses: Pace attack, fielding, top-order batting.

  4. South Africa captain AB de Villiers

"It was a good game. We did it our way. We follow our game plans and the guys set it up very nicely up top for our middle order. We have made a lot of hundreds over the past 12-15 months and we are very proud of that.

"Amla is still the rock and will always be that for us. Hopefully that form can continue for the rest of the tour."

On the balance of the side: "That is decided very much on a match by match basis. I'm very comfortable with whatever balance we create and as long as I'm comfortable and the other's follow all is well."

  5. Player reaction

SA 411-4 bt Ireland 210 by 201 runs

Ireland captain William Porterfield said: "It was a difficult evening, they played very well. We had one early breakthrough and wanted more but then it was hard for us.

"You want to be taking your chances, that's cricket, but they played very well after that. It was a very good pitch and it was difficult to muster up those wickets. We tried to put some pressure on, but we would've liked a few more wickets early on.

"All credit to our lower order for the way they stuck it out batting at the end and they were up against some pretty aggressive bowling.

"Obviously the match against Zimbabwe is a big one so we will be looking to take the two points."

  6. Player reaction

SA 411-4 bt Ireland 210 by 201 runs

South Africa's Hashim Amla, who scored 159, said: "Fortunately we got off to a good start. We had wickets in hand so that gave us the luxury of being able to go for it, to see what happened and fortunately it paid off.

"The guys have been batting well, it was a good wicket today. It is always nice to win a game of cricket, no matter who you are playing against.

"Any hundred is a good hundred. I'm just happy to get some runs and set it up for the boys at the back end. The bowlers bowled very well and fortunately we walk away with a comfortable victory."

  7. Pool B table

Here's the Pool B table, with South Africa closing in on India in top spot and Ireland still clinging on to the fourth quarter-final spot before that crucial showdown with Zimbabwe at the weekend.

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa's confidence grows and grows. They have had two incredible games in a row. From about over 20 overs onwards we knew they were going to get 400 again. They have strength in depth and the stuffing was knocked out of Ireland by the opening spell from Dale Steyn. They did well to get to 200 but this game was over the second South Africa got to about 320. They will be thinking that if they were to lose a game, this was the one to lose."

  10. Post update

Both of these teams will be back in action on Saturday. South Africa face Pakistan and Ireland take on Zimbabwe in a game they badly need to win.

  11. Post update

    Alan Lewis

Ex-Ireland captain on BBC Test Match Special

"It might have not been the most exciting of games, but it's interesting to see the celebrations from the South Africa team and this win means something to them.

"AB de Villiers said he would give Ireland the respect they deserved and they gave them one hell of a going over. They thoroughly deserved their win and I'm sure they will be very pleased with where they are at this point of the World Cup."

  12. Post update

Handshakes all round. South Africa are purring now and they know it. No team had ever made 400 in back-to-back ODIs before today and in Steyn, Abbott, Morkel and Tahir they have a highly enviable attack. For the Irish, it's a first defeat of the 2015 World Cup, but they are still very much in the mix for a quarter-final place.

  13. Champagne moment

SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 201 RUNS

  14. WICKET

Dockrell b Morkel 25 (Ireland 210 all out)

That'll do it. Dockrell misses one from Morkel and loses his off stump. A comprehensive win for the South Africans in Canberra.

    George Dockrell
  15. Ire 203-9

Andy McBrine is Ireland's last man, squeezing two on the leg side to get off the mark. Abbott rounds off the over with a quicker one that beats the bat.

Former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs on Twitter: "Lots of talk of a team getting to 450. Would be more interesting if teams could chase down 400 more often than not.

  17. WICKET

    Sorensen c de Kock b Morkel 22 (Ire 200-9)

More for the Blarney Army to cheer as Dockrell clips a half-volley away for a single to bring up Ireland's 200. But the joy is short-lived as Sorensen turns his back on a Morkel bouncer and gloves it through to the keeper.

  18. Post update

    Alan Lewis

Ex-Ireland captain on BBC Test Match Special

"I had a bet with Graeme Swann whether I would be back here in the commentary box for the 43rd over - and I won. But I honestly felt I wouldn't be back and I went and sat among the Irish supporters. They are still in good voice."

  19. Ire 199-8

Sorensen continues to make Tahir look like a club bowler. Two thrashes down the ground, the first for four, and the second for six. A young man in pink lets it slip through his fingers and holds his head in his hands in self-loathing.

  20. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Hugh in France on Twitter: Spot on "Tattz in Nottingham". Same was true with the Oz against NZ. England would have conceded, NZ would have won by 10 wkts.

  21. Ire 186-8

Even a wide gets a big cheer as Ireland creep closer to the 200 mark. De Villiers looks disgusted with himself as a shy at the stump misses by a whisker. I reckon I'll stop including the target in the headline, don't you reckon?

  22. Ire 184-8 (Dockrell 14, Sorensen 11)

Huge cheers from the Blarney Army as Sorensen clatters Tahir for back-to-back fours, the first over mid-on and the second through cover. Cracking stuff from the number 10. And Tahir is now wicketless through nine overs.

  23. Text 81111

Tattz in Nottingham: Ireland are hanging in there. Great credit to them. England would have folded by now.

  24. Dropped catch

    Ire 176-8

Dockrell cuts hard and Miller puts down a very tricky chance at backward point.

Sorensen is struck on the wrist by a Steyn bumper. That must have hurt, but he's not showing it. Ireland just need to bat as long as they can here as whatever their final score is, it will be divided by 50 overs to work out their net run rate.

  25. Ire 172-8

Sorensen musters two off Abbott, who will be eyeing up a first five-wicket haul here. Quite the stand-in for Vernon Philander.

  26. Ire 169-8 (target 412)

Just a single off Steyn. Dockrell has 10 from 30 balls, and six of those runs came in a single blow.

  27. Post update

    Stephan Shemilt

    BBC Sport in Napier

"I was out for dinner earlier on today in a Napier Irish bar (every city has one). Obviously, the cricket was on TV, but of more interest was the presence of Wasim Akram, who left soon after I arrived (I don't think the two were linked). Quite some time later, I caught a sight of Wasim, still standing at the door. He had been politely humouring a quite inebriated local for more than 20 minutes."

  28. Ire 168-8 (Dockrell 9, Sorensen 0)

Just to remind you that Ireland were 48-5 earlier, so it's been some effort to get to this point. Max Sorensen is up next, and he keeps out his first ball.

  29. WICKET

    O'Brien c Rossouw b Abbott 48 (Ire 167-8)

Short from Abbott, O'Brien piles into a pull shot, but can't keep it down and Rossouw trots in from deep midwicket to take the catch baseball-style.

    South Africa
  30. Ire 166-7

And still we trundle towards the inevitable. The third and fourth spots in this group are looking like a straight fight between the Windies, Ireland and Pakistan. Who's going to be the odd man out?

  31. Post update

    Alan Lewis

Rakesh Pradhan: He bats, keeps wicket, fields on the boundary and takes wickets. AB de Villiers has to be the greatest ever.

  33. Ire 163-7 (O'Brien 45, Dockrell 8)

Dockrell dances down the wicket and launches Tahir over mid-off for six. There are plenty of Ireland fans in Canberra (there always are) and they are loving that shot.

  34. Ire 157-7

De Villiers even has the cheek to bowl a bouncer with the keeper up in a bid to intimidate new man Dockrell. Any thoughts on our "Is there anything AB de Villiers couldn't do?" conundrum? First man on Mars? Look no further.

  35. Ire 155-7

I take Alan Lewis's point but South Africa have a valid reason for trying out some new bowlers. They are trying to work out whether they can afford to carry on with only four frontline bowlers, even when JP Duminy is fit again. Maiden from Dockrell.

  36. Post update

    Alan Lewis

Ex-Ireland captain on BBC Test Match Special

"John Mooney will be very disappointed with that. But this is not something I like to see in an innings when the non-bowlers come on, although it is their prerogative to do what they want. They have 411 on the board and Ireland are where they are.

"It's not so much that's it's insulting, the opposition can do what they like. But I played in a lot of 'Jazz Hat' games where we were cannon-fodder for Australia or West Indies when they were in their pomp. As much as I enjoyed playing in games against them, to see part-timers coming on is not that edifying."

  37. Ire 155-7

What else can you say about De Villiers? Growing up, he was a football, rugby, tennis, swimming, badminton and athletics champ. Is there anything South Africa's golden boy couldn't do? Feel free to let us know.

He thinks he's got another one here as De Kock whips off the bails, but the third umpire says O'Brien's foot was back in time.

  38. WICKET

    Mooney b De Villiers 8 (Ire 151-7)

    What was I saying...

Flighted outside off stump and Mooney chops it onto his timbers. Seven down.

    John mooney
  39. Ire 150-6

Four singles to the Irish off Tahir. Now then, De Villiers has decided that the best way to fight off sleep is to have a bowl himself. This should be interesting. He'll probably take a five-fer.

  40. Ire 146-6 (O'Brien 38, Mooney 6)

The cameras capture De Villiers blinking repeatedly. Is he struggling to stay awake? O'Brien tries to stimulate the senses by crashing a full toss through the covers.

  41. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"You know the game has lost its edge when the height of entertainment is a Mexican Wave. We still see it in England at the end of the summer Test matches at places like the Oval or at Headingley when the drinks are flowing."

  42. Ire 137-6 (target 412)

Tahir continues to probe without reward. Mooney dabs him for a couple. This game is morbidly moribund.

  43. Text 81111

Al in Cambs: I take Stephan Shemilt's point re short boundaries but haven't most of Afridi's shots gone straight to hand for the last 10 years? WC average of 12!

  44. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It's very slow going now. When the result is not in doubt it can be a tedious afternoon for everyone involved.

"I'm sure Ireland are thinking about their run rate, but if they were to attack the South Africans it would convince their own players they can score well and that will stand them in good stead for when they have to play Pakistan."

  45. Ire 135-6 (O'Brien 31, Mooney 2)

John Mooney is the new man, nicknamed "mad Mooney" by Graeme Swann because of his angry reaction to getting out earlier in the tournament. It doesn't take him long to take a risk, ramping du Plessis over the keeper's head. But there's no pace on the ball so he only gets a single for his efforts.

  46. WICKET

    Ire 129-6

Balbirnie is right on the attack. Four through the off side, but a pull shot doesn't have the legs and he picks out Rossouw on the deep square leg boundary.

    Rilee Rossouw
  47. Post update

    Stephan Shemilt

    BBC Sport in Napier

"Before tomorrow's game between Pakistan and the UAE in Napier, I went along to McLean Park, which is another of New Zealand's rugby grounds that is used for cricket. The dimensions of the playing surface mean that one of the square boundaries is very, very short - a rough measurement of about 53m. A Shahid Afridi forward defence carries further than that."

  48. Ire 124-5 (Balbirnie 54, O'Brien 27)

Time for O'Brien to open his shoulders. In some style. He launches Faf du Plessis for a big six wide of long-on. Is the spirit of Bangalore still burning somewhere under that ginger barnet?

  49. Balbirnie 50

    Ire 115-5

Back to frontliners now as Morkel returns. Balbirnie gets a thick edge that flies past slip for four then cuts the next ball to the fence to bring up a plucky old half-century off 66 balls.

  50. Email tms@bbc.co.uk

Simon Clarke re 07:31: "Comments like Broad's infuriate me. Accept that you're not good enough and accept that work needs to be done. The supporters at least deserve that.

"The mentality needs to change, we need to put our confidence in some of the proven limited-over batsmen we know we have and lose the likes of Bell and Ballance, who just aren't right for ODIs, especially with teams pushing 400 more frequently. We're nowhere near that."

  51. Ire 107-5 (target 412)

Faf du Plessis's part-time leg-spin is being introduced. Ooh. Ugly start as he drags one down the leg side and gives away five wides. If South Africa do have a weakness, it is in the fifth bowler department so looks like AB wants to size up some of his options.

  52. Ire 98-5 (K O'Brien 19, Balbirnie 42)

There is not much riding on this game now, but Andrew Balbirnie is closing in on a little bit of personal glory as he moves into his 40s, approaching his half-century. Part-time off-spinner Rilee Rossouw concedes eight off the over.

  53. Ire 91-5 (target 412)

Ireland continue to plod along, doing their best to make this respectable and stay in for as long as they can.

Three for Kevin O'Brien and a single for Balbirnie from that over.

Only one single off Imran Tahir's over. A drive from Balbirnie in the direction of long-off.

  57. Join the debate at #bbccricket

The Cricket Wolf: Clever move from England getting trounced by Sri Lanka. Now they'll likely avoid a rampant South Africa in the quarter-finals.

The only problem is that if England avoid South Africa, they will probably face India, who thrashed South Africa by 130 runs. Assuming Eoin Morgan's side qualify of course.

  58. Ire 81-5 (K O'Brien 12, Balbirnie 33)

A desperate dive from Morne Morkel at the end of the 18th over is unsuccessful as the ball picked up pace on a quick outfield and went into the rope. That takes the partnership up to 33, Ireland's best of the match so far.

  59. What you may have missed

Well, it started so brightly for Ireland. They claimed the wicket of Quinton de Kock in only the third over, but two dropped catches cost Ireland dearly.

Hashim Amla was dropped by Ed Joyce on 10 and went on to make 159 and Kevin O'Brien missed an opportunity to dismiss Faf du Plessis on 19. He was eventually out for 109.

A rapid 61 off 30 balls from Rilee Rossouw and 46 from 23 deliveries from David Miller saw South Africa reach 411-4, their second successive score of more than 400.

Chasing a highly-improbable 412 to win, Ireland have lost five wickets cheaply, with three for Kyle Abbott and two for Dale Steyn.

    South Africa v Ireland
  60. Ire 72-5 (K O'Brien 7, Balbirnie 24)

The camera focuses on a young Irish fan, with his face painted. The match may be over as a contest, but he is still having a great time. He is very happy to see Balbirnie score a boundary, as he swept a full toss away over square leg for four runs. Seven off the over for Ireland.

  61. How they stand

So any Irish hopes of winning the match have long blown away with the wind. But with net run rate likely to play a part in who makes the quarter-finals, Ireland will be desperate to build the best score they can do.

This is how things stood before the start of this match, and you could see a scenario where at least two out of Ireland, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Pakistan end up on the same amount of points. So still a lot to play for, for William Porterfield's side.

    Pool B table
  62. Ire 65-5 (Balbirnie 24, O'Brien 5)

It's a double change as Behardien enters the attack with his medium pace. A chance for Ireland to cash in perhaps? Not yet. The batsmen are very respectful as they pick off some singles.

  63. Ire 61-5

Googly early doors. Driven to long-on. Then Tahir lands one on Balbirnie's toes, but the batsman reads it well and swishes to the square leg boundary for four.

  64. Ire 54-5 (target 412)

I've got a feeling this could just limp along for a few overs now. Single to O'Brien among five dots. Here's Imran Tahir to try to spice things up.

  65. Ire 53-5

The sun is setting on the Manuka Oval, the clouds tinged with orange. The sun went down on this match quite some time ago. We've got to go through the motions though and Ireland appear to be knuckling down now. A single apiece for Balbirnie and O'Brien off Steyn's latest.

  66. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Former India batsman Aakash Chopra on Twitter says: South Africa playing such cricket is bad news for Sri Lanka. Not the ideal team to run into in the quarter-finals. To avoid them Sri Lanka must beat Australia.

  67. Ire 51-5 (target 412)

Balbirnie helps one on its way past his hips and picks up two to fine leg. The goal for Ireland here has to be to bat out as many overs as possible, but that's easier said than done against this fearsome attack.

  68. Ire 48-5 (Balbirnie 13, K O'Brien 0)

Now then, Ireland need to reach 122 runs to avoid the heaviest ever ODI defeat. I'd say it's in the (Gary) balance. And Imran Tahir - the destroyer of the Windies - hasn't even bowled a ball yet. It's a hammer blow to the Irish net run rate too.

  69. WICKET

Wilson lbw Abbott 0 (Ire 48-5)

  76. Ire 37-3 (target 412)

Morne Morkel is on for Abbott. Hardly a let up for the Irish with 90mph bullets raining down from the sky. As it happens, a slower ball bamboozles Balbirnie and he scoops one which only just loops over the outstretched arms of square leg.

  79. Ire 26-3 (target 412)

Not seen much of Abbott. Looks a fine bowler. Too good for Balbirnie, who gropes at one outside off stump. Still only three down. For now.

Monday was a rare rest day in the tournament - the only one in the entire group stage, which is just over halfway through.

A good time, therefore, for Stephan Shemilt - our man down under - to take a look at what we have learned from the first 23 games.

Tantalisingly, it features Chris Gayle, spinners, streakers, why you should bat first in Australia, and most incredibly of all, the notion... were England's tactics right all along?

  107. SA 411-4

    Rossouw 61, Miller 46

So Ireland, an easy task for you. All you have to do is get 412 to win.

The carnage ends with 24 runs coming off Kevin O'Brien's last over. It includes two sixes and two fours. If only Ireland had held on to those two early chances. Just to remind you, Amla was dropped on 10 and Du Plessis spilled on 19, both men went on to score hundreds.

Rilee Rossouw ends unbeaten on 61 from 30 balls, with David Miller 46 not out off 23 deliveries. An absolutely stunning performance from the South African batsmen.

  108. SA 402-4

I mocked one fan for dropping a shot. Well, some fella in a bright pink shirt does a lot better holding on to Miller's slog over the mid-wicket area. He responds by high-fiving everyone he can see. The supporter that is, not Miller.

  110. 50 for Rossouw

    SA 387-4

Rilee Rossouw reaches his fifty, in only 27 balls. He is helped by a waist-high full toss, which is swatted away for four, before another full toss adds a further two.

Also in the over, David Miller had been going a bit slow by South African standards. With his 25 off 16 balls. He remedies the situation with successive fours.

  111. SA 371-4 (Miller 25, Rossouw 44)

Rossouw dances down the wicket to meet Andrew McBrine's delivery. And sends it for a low, flat six. From the next ball Roussow is again dancing on his toes and gets a bottom edge, which races away off a fast outfield.

Rossouw's 44 have come off only 23 deliveries. South Africa. Most exciting team in this World Cup? Maybe. Potential winners? They certainly have a chance with this batting line-up.

  112. SA 360-4 (Miller 24, Rossouw 34)

Max Sorensen gets an attempted yorker wrong, and it is dispatched over mid-wicket for six by Rilee Rossouw. To make it worse for the Irish fans, one of them in the crowd drops a dolly. Come on lad, you have to do better than that.

The boundaries are flowing. The milestones are coming regularly. The next one to mention is Amla's 150, with his last 50 coming off only 24 deliveries. His two off the first ball of the over takes him there. Little in ways of a celebration though. Certainly no shadow boxing at the stumps. He still has work to do.

Chris Gayle scored 215 against Zimbabwe last week, the first double century in a World Cup. Can Amla beat that?

  130. SA 280-2

AB de Villiers is next in. George Dockrell wishes he wasn't. A four and a six off the first two balls of the over, before another four. It is a horror show from Mooney as 27 runs come from it, to take a wrecking ball to his bowling figures. Among the carnage is Amla pulling one over square leg for six, before another maximum, this time over extra cover. Other highlights / lowlights include a four off a short and wide delivery and a waist-high full toss that is a no ball. And slapped for four.

A very comfortable start for South Africa, with another seven coming from Paul Stirling's over.

A pretty impressive square drive for four from Amla takes him to within one shot of his half-century. Remember, he was dropped on 10 in the sixth over. That is already looking a costly error.

  178. SA 73-1

Indecision from South Africa. Will they run. Yes, no, maybe. Oh, I don't know. They don't either, but it does not prove costly. A direct hit may have proved interesting, but the throw does not hit the stumps.

A bit of a fortunate over from South Africa as they early picked up two from a straight forward block to the bowler. The ball hits a bobble and mysteriously disappears for two. Some weird voodoo magic at work in Canberra.

  180. SA 73-1 (Amla 37, Du Plessis 25)

A pretty uneventful over from Paul Stirling. Amla scores three off it and is closing in on his second successive half-century after 65 against West Indies. He is on 37 off 41 balls.

The Ireland bowling figures in the World Cup before this game...

Seamers: 9 wickets in 57 overs at an average of 44.55 and economy rate of 7.04.

Spinners: 6 wickets in 43 overs at an average of 29.16 and economy rate of 4.07.

  182. SA 64-1

Two off the over from George Dockrell. That Du Plessis chance, which Kevin O'Brien could not hold, went for four by the way.

Chris White: I reckon that dropped catch is a clever ploy by Ireland. No more wickets, no De Villiers.

Ahh, our first look at the Irish masterplan. Tactical genius. Maybe not.

  184. Du Plessis dropped on 19

    SA 60-1

Another chance missed for Ireland. Du Plessis plays an uncertain shot, sending the ball towards slip. But Kevin O'Brien cannot get down quick enough to grab it. The ball came from Paul Stirling, the spinner coming in for his first over in place of Mooney.

Stirling took 2-27 against United Arab Emirates. He should have one in the bag today.

  186. SA 57-1 Amla 31, Du Plessis 18)

This is beginning to look quite comfortable for South Africa and Ireland will need to peg them back.

George Dockrell is thrown the ball, but Ireland's struggles with their bowling, apart from the excellent John Mooney, continue with six coming off the over. Faf du Plessis finds the boundary, cutting it past point.

  187. SA 51-1 (Amla 30, Du Plessis 13)

Du Plessis pushes Mooney away for two through mid-wicket early in the over, but the bowler responds well with only one more off the over.

  188. How's stat?

South Africa have won all three previous one-day internationals between these teams, two of which have come at World Cups (2007 and 2011).

Ireland have been responsible for four of the 11 highest successful run chases at World Cups.

South Africa's win against West Indies on Friday was their 50th World Cup match; the Proteas have won 32 and lost 16, with two ties.

Ireland celebrate dismissing South Africa's Graeme Smith at the 2011 World Cup
  189. SA 48-1 (Amla 30, Du Plessis 10)

Mooney is bowling well, but is not helped by the bowlers at the other end. Max Sorensen was taken off after his two overs went for 21 and Kevin O'Brien's two have cost exactly the same.

The best shot over of the over comes from Hashim Amla, who punishes a delivery that is too full from O'Brien and drives it to the rope. That is the second boundary of the over after an earlier effort that went past mid-on.

  191. SA 38-1 (Mooney 1-6, K O'Brien 0-16)

Meanwhile, John Mooney keeps it tight for his first five balls of the seventh over, before a wide off his sixth ball. But Ireland will be content with a respectable start, with South Africa on 38-1 off seven overs. These lads are certainly happy.

  193. SA 36-1 (Amla 20, Du Plessis 9)

Hashim Amla instantly makes Ireland pay for that dropped catch by hitting successive boundaries in the sixth over.

  194. Amla dropped on 10

    SA 25-1

What a chance. Wasted. Hashim Amla flicks one to short mid-wicket where Ed Joyce is waiting. But he can't hold on to the opportunity.

It would have been a wicket for Kevin O'Brien with his first ball of the match. He is playing in his 87th one-day international, a new Ireland record. It would have been a lovely way to celebrate that landmark, but not to be.

  195. SA 25-1

Excellent from Mooney again. Only four off the over and he has figures of 1-4 off three overs.

He looks just like Rambo. Well, actually I don't think Sylvester Stallone wouldn't have got away with a bright green headband in the jungle.

But still, a very good start from Mooney.

  197. SA 21-1 (Mooney 1-0, Sorensen 0-21)

Max Sorensen's erratic start continues at the other end. He bowled three wides in his first over. And does the same in his second. Du Plessis also gets off the mark during the over, driving through cover for four.

  198. SA 12-1 (Amla 8, Du Plessis 0)

Faf du Plessis is the next man in. And he is a man in form with scores of 55 and 62 in his last two innings. He cannot get off the mark with his first three balls and it is a wicket maiden from Mooney.

A perfect start from the Irish, but can they build on this?

    De Kock c Wilson b Mooney 1 (SA 12-1)

It needs a review to clear it up, but Ireland are celebrating in only the third over. Mooney's delivery ends up in Gary Wilson's hands and it sounded like there was a noise.

The umpire gives nothing, but William Porterfield calls for a review. And it's a good decision. Replays show Quinton de Kock got a faint edge. And he is gone.

  201. SA 12-0 (Amla 8, De Kock 1)

Unfortunately for Ireland, Max Sorensen's radar is not as accurate at the other end. He bowls three wides in his first over and Hashim Amla gets the first boundary of the match.

Standing outside leg stump, he moves across at the last minute and flicks it away leg side for four. Amla then hits another four sending his shot just wide of a diving William Porterfield.

"The International Cricket Council plan to cut the World Cup from its current 14-team format to 10 sides for the 2019 event in England.

"Put simply, this is a nonsense. How can cricket's governing body argue with any credibility that cutting the number of teams involved in a World Cup is good for the global game? There is no logic to that claim.

"The ICC is supposed to be encouraging the development of the game outside of its traditional Test powers. How can blocking other nations from taking part in the World Cup be good for the growth of the sport? The Associates - in the case of this World Cup, Ireland, Scotland, Afghanistan and the UAE - are all serious cricket teams."

  210. Ireland playing for their future?

Ireland have been excellent at the World Cup, but will they be in the tournament in four years time in England and Wales?

Well, that is something that no one knows. At the moment there are only 10 teams due to be playing in the 2019 competition, and with 10 Test playing nations, Ireland could well miss out.

But their case is improving with every good performance and every shock result. India legend Sachin Tendulkar and West Indies great Michael Holding are among those who have said the tournament should not be reduced from its current 14 teams to 10 sides in four years' time.

Another shock win today and those calls are going to get louder.

  211. Teams

South Africa: Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock (wk), Faf du Plessis, Rilee Rossouw, AB de Villiers (capt), David Miller, Farhaan Behardien, Dale Steyn, Kyle Abbott, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir.

Ireland: William Porterfield (capt), Paul Stirling, Ed Joyce, Niall O'Brien, Andrew Balbirnie, Gary Wilson (wk), Kevin O'Brien, John Mooney, Maz Sorensen, George Dockrell, Andrew McBrine.

  212. Mr Wilson's Diary

In his latest diary for the BBC Sport website, Ireland wicketkeeper Gary Wilson insists "we fully believe that it is possible to get a result against South Africa".

He added: "At the same time, we are under no illusions. They are obviously a quality side, packed with world-class players.

"Their captain AB de Villiers is no stranger to our shores, having blasted no fewer than two double hundreds while playing for Carrick CC 10 years back.

"I couldn't believe that a player who was playing in the NCU, our little union, was so close to playing on the world stage. Now he dominates it. Of course, we will have our plans for him. He is human after all. Albeit very nearly superhuman!"

Five of Ireland's six World Cup wins to date have come batting second.

The last 23 times South Africa have batted first in ODIs, they have won 18, lost three and had two no-results. In that period (30 October 2013 to date) South Africa have won seven and lost eight of the matches in which they have batted second.

Ireland v South Africa (03:30 GMT)

Ireland have a plan to stop AB de Villiers. They may have to put that into operation quickly as South Africa have won the toss. And they will bat first.

  215. How do you solve a problem like AB?

Ireland captain William Porterfield accepts that keeping in-form Proteas skipper AB de Villiers contained "obviously will be a challenge".

Porterfield said: "You can sit all day and talk about him and different theories and plans and whatever, but you've got to stick it on with your best ball and how you go about things."

On Ireland's run of three games in eight days:

"There's been quite a break between games and we always knew that this was the way that the group stage was going to work for ourselves, so we've been building up towards that.

"We've put in a lot of yards in the time we've had off - that's going to stand you in good stead later on in the tournament when the games come thicker and faster."

    William Porterfield
  216. Awesome AB

So just how do you a describe an innings of 162 not out off only 66 balls?

Phenomenal? Outstanding? Wonderful? It was one of those breathtaking moments when all you could do is stare in disbelief and enjoy watching someone at the absolute peak of his powers.

AB de Villiers's score was the fastest 150 in one-day international cricket of all time as his side racked up an incredible 408-5 in a crushing 257-run win over the West Indies.

So, can Ireland stop him? They have a plan.

  217. Good morning

Hello, good morning and welcome to BBC Sport's live text commentary featuring the Pool B match between Ireland and South Africa.

What a tournament it has been so far for the Irish. Victories over West Indies and United Arab Emirates from their first two games have raised hopes that they can finish in the top four of the pool and move into the last eight.

Today, they are aiming for their third win in a row.

    However, there is a problem.

  218. One more shock?

    Ireland

Ireland have history of beating major cricketing nations. Can they do it again today? Not only are they aiming for a win to boost their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals, they may well be fighting for their World Cup future.
