Aston Villa need points from every match - Tim Sherwood

Newcastle 1-0 Aston Villa: Sherwood putting pressure on players

Manager Tim Sherwood says Aston Villa must take points from each of their remaining fixtures as they bid to escape relegation.

A 1-0 defeat by Newcastle left Villa in the bottom three with 11 matches remaining.

The Midlands club have lost their last seven league games.

Sherwood said: "I'm ramping up the pressure - I'm telling the players we have to take points in every game we play. It's as simple as that."

Sherwood was appointed as Paul Lambert's successor on 14 February but has not collected a point from his two matches in charge. The result at Newcastle followed a 2-1 defeat against Stoke on 21 February.

Villa have been in the top flight since 1988 and Sherwood believes they have what it takes to survive this season.

He said: "I saw signs this team isn't ready to give up. It's not too late, there's everything to play for.

"People say we're too good to go down, it's all nonsense. It's all about guts and desire when you're in a relegation zone. We've got that, now we need to show quality."
