    Swing from the rafters?

    Nick Matthew and Adrian Grant

World and Commonwealth champion Nick Matthew believes squash is enhancing its prospects of securing a place in the Olympics.

"The Commonwealth Games is brilliant for squash and I think the sport has been one of the talking points of the Games," said the Englishman. "If this doesn't push squash into the Olympics then what else do we need to do - do we need to swing from the rafters to play shots?"

Matthew and Adrian Grant, the defending champions, progressed through to the men's doubles quarter-finals with an 11-6 11-5 victory over Jamaica's Chris Binnie and Bruce Burrowes.

"Will never forget the first time we walked out as a team, the roar of the crowd was amazing as has the support throughout the whole competition! Can't tell you what a pleasure it's been. Hopefully we have helped show table tennis in a good light and this experience can be the start of something very special for the sport in Scotland."

Craig Howieson was knocked out of the men's singles by Welshman Ryan Jenkins, who will face England's Paul Drinkhall in the last 32 on Friday.

Falkner, who now has three Commonwealth gold medals following fours victory in Melbourne and a pairs triumph in Delhi, said: "It couldn't have been a better performance from our perspective.

"That's a tough call for them to make (the 'mercy' rule), but I think they felt the momentum was with us, we were dominating the game and it was ours."

    Victoria Vincent

England's 13-year-old Victoria Vincent - the youngest entrant in any Games event - came a creditable 10th in the 10m platform diving.

Vincent - 54 days younger that Scotland's bronze-medal winning para-swimmer Erraid Davis - had originally been barred from competing because she was under the Olympic age barrier of 14, but won an appeal.

"I could have dived better but at the end of the day I'm at the Commonwealth Games at the age of 13. The Olympics is my dream, but we will just have to see if I can make it that far," she said.

    Northern Ireland seek nine golds

    Paddy Barnes of Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland head coach John Conlan expects more from his history-making boxing team as they head into Friday's semi-finals with nine medals already guaranteed.

Conlan, father of Olympic bronze medallist Michael who is one of the nine guaranteed at least bronze, says the mindset of the team.

"Boxing in Northern Ireland has always been very strong - there used to be a joke that we had lots of heart but no technique. Now we have technique and heart," said Conlan.

"We came here for 11 gold medals and I don't see why we cannot go on now and get nine. Bronze isn't enough and I never asked any of them to enter the Commonwealth Games to win bronze. Gold is all that matters."

  45. Athletics

    Men's 200m final

The Jamaicans rustle up a trio of their national flags to drape around their shoulders, then swing their dancing hips in a typically-fun celebration.

But you have got to feel for Lesotho's Mosito Lehata, who crashes to the track in despair. He was right up with Dwyer, Weir and Livermore, maybe even leading as they scuttled off the bend, before the latter Jamaican mugged him on the line for bronze.

England's Danny Talbot finished seventh in 20.45 secs.

But it could not push 27-year-old Child down the final straight that little bit quicker.

So England have already got two representatives in the final. Can they make it a hat-trick? They can.

Bianca Williams was a surprise fastest qualifier for these semi-finals, but shows it was no fluke. The 20-year-old runs a brilliant bend and streaks clear to win the third semi-final in 23.17secs. Top stuff.

"Louis Smith gave it a good shot. The whole routine was very tidy and he went for broke. The Commonwealth Games were maybe a different challenge for him compared to everyone else. He wanted to put the critics right and show he still had the passion for gymnastics, and it wasn't all about the celebrity thing for him."

    Gymnastics men's pommel horse final

Louis Smith after his silver medal routine

Louis Smith might win gold in the Commonwealth Games face-gurning event with that grimace, but he could only get bronze in the men's pommel. I say only bronze because he is the reigning Olympic silver medallist. But after a fame-chasing sabbatical he has returned to prove he compete with the best. That gurn has changed to a beaming smile as he climbs on to the podium to collect his gong.

  179. Gymnastics

    Men's pommel horse final

    Beth Tweddle

"It feels right that in front of a home crowd Dan Keatings produces that. He's had his ups and downs in the past few years, including missing out on London 2012, so it's great for him to get that gold. Because he was up before Whitlock and Smith he didn't have a benchmark to aim for and that really put the pressure on those two. It's a massive achievement for Dan because this wasn't just any old final, this was the one they all wanted."

"I think if you'd have asked most people who their money was on it wouldn't have been Dan Keatings, it would have been Max Whitlock or Louis Smith. Louis really upped his game, but Dan has just produced a brilliant effort."

    Dan Keatings

"The gymnasts are almost as good as the judges and they all went and congratulated Dan Keatings straight away so they knew he had got the gold. Max was under pressure to nail his routine and it wasn't quite as good as what he's done. It's still good enough for Max to get silver, but Dan deserved that gold."

  182. Gold Medal

Daniel Keatings (Scotland) - Men's pommel final

Three-time gold medallist Max Whitlock has enjoyed a dream Commonwealth Games so far, but it doesn't look as though the Englishman has done enough to sneak above Scotland's Dan Keatings. No he hasn't. Which means Keatings takes gold!

England claim silver and bronze through Max Whitlock and Louis Smith. Wales' Jac Davies is just nudged out of the medal placings into fourth.

  183. Gymnastics

    Men's pommel final

Dan Purvis's effort wasn't as technically stretched as the others - and he pays the price with a score of 14.516. That puts him fourth and means England's Louis Smith is now guaranteed a medal. Shows how much I know....

  184. Gymnastics

    Christine Still

BBC Sport gymnastics expert and veteran coach

"That was an impressive routine from Louis Smith, until right at the end. I was thinking 'how are the judges going to separate them' but he just lost his flow and paused before the finish. As expected, it's not quite enough to overhaul Daniel Keatings."

  185. Gymnastics

    Men's pommel final

Louis Smith does go into second, behind Scotland's Dan Keatings, with a score of 14.966. That surely won't be enough with three top-class performers left, will it? He is helped by Zi Gan of Singapore not cutting the mustard. But with Scotland's Dan Purvis and England's Max Whitlock the last two left, they must be favourites to sneak into the top three.

  187. Gymnastics

Now it is the turn of England's Louis Smith. The Olympic silver medallist smiles when he dismounts, but he loses his rhythm at the very end of an impressive routine. That isn't going to be a medal I'm afraid, Louis.

Here comes Scotland's Dan Keatings. Plenty of flag-waving and happy clapping as Keatings lays down the gauntlet with an elegant and effortless performance. He gets a whopping score of 16.058 - just before the jaws of England pair Max Whitlock and Louis Smith drop to the floor. They've got plenty of hard work ahead if they want a medal.

  199. Gymnastics

    Women's Vault final

Whatever Max Whitlock can do, Claudia Fragapane can too. As well as the Vault and All-Round golds, she has a third piece of Commonwealth gold hanging around her neck after helping England win the team event on Tuesday.

  200. Gold Medal

Claudia Fragapane (England) - Women's Vault final

    Claudia Fragapane

England gymnast Claudia Fragapane has done it! The 16-year-old wins her second gold medal in two days, adding the Vault to the All-Round title. She chalks up 14.766 in her first effort, better than her qualifying mark, then nails her second.

The suspense is almost too much, her eyes are fixed on the scoreboard, the judges taking an eternity to make up their minds. The fans start to slow clap the judges before all is revealed - an average score of 14.633. That pip Canada's Elisabeth Black, who takes silver.

  201. Gymnastics

    Women's Vault final

Someone open that top drawer - because India's Dipa Karmakar has just pulled a seven-difficulty vault out of it. But, despite her heroics in the second attempt, it is not enough to dislodge Elisabeth Black from the gold-medal position.

  202. Wrestling

Coming up - four gold medals to be won

Coming up from 16:30 BST, the culmination of the wrestling tournament. It may be vastly different from the type of grappling enjoyed by Hulk Hogan or The Rock, but that doesn't mean it is any less entertaining to watch.

While the gold-medal matches are devoid of wrestlers from around the British Isles, there is still home interest in three of the four weight categories.

Scotland's Kathryn Marsh goes for bronze against England's Louisa Porogovska in the women's 55kg, before another Scot, Alex Gladkov, tries to do the same in the men's 65kg. "These vaults are very hard, they do not get the credit I think they should do, it is very complex twisting for these gymnasts."

  205. Gymnastics

    Women's Vault final

Unfortunately for Kelly Simm, her moment in the golden gaze lasts for a matter of seconds. Canada teenager Elisabeth Black moves into first with an average score of 14.433.

Then, Black's team-mate Maegan Chant also pips Simm to go into silver. Two more gymnasts, including England's Claudia Fragapane, left.

She's next to hurtle towards the vault, double twisting in her first jump, then goes even better in an aggressive, although slightly easier, second attempt. Does that give her a medal chance? Yes it does! Simm scores 14.199 to put her first with four more athletes to go.

"Double Olympic medallist Louis Smith has been watching his friends and rivals tumble and twist on the floor from the stands. The Englishman will be competing in the pommel and that competition is expected to be a three-horse race (sorry).

"The Commonwealth all-around and floor champion Max Whitlock is the favourite as his routine has the highest tariff of difficulty. But Smith and Scotland's Dan Keatings should also produce world-class routines. Exciting times ahead."

What's great about him is he's still got that hunger, even though he is such a humble and shy young lad. He's one of those people who isn't satisfied with what he's got and is always striving to improve."

I know a man with the golden touch. Max Whitlock has got enough gold, but he would say he hasn't got too much. The Englishman, 21, looks almost sheepish as he clambers on to the podium for his third gold of the Commonwealth Games.

"For Scottish Cycling the Commonwealth Games is a stepping stone, it is part of a bigger legacy and a 10-year strategy with the aim of ultimately having Scots competing at an international level.

"Cycling is booming and success at elite level inspires participation below that, so we are delighted."

  226. Gymnastics

    Women's Vault final (15:48)

    Men's Floor final

BBC Sport commentator and gymnastic expert Christine Hill enjoys the performance of Scotland's Daniel Keatings but laments the foot he puts outside the floor which has cost him a medal: "That was a classy routine with lots of energy. But it's that 0.1 for stepping out that's the difference between second and third. That ended up costing him a medal."

Canada's Scott Morgan pushed Keatings down to fourth as he went last to win bronze.

Scotland's David Millar tells BBC Sport after finishing eighth in the time trial: "It was like a Tour de France stage out there with all the Scottish flags and everyone cheering my name. I knew it wasn't my day when I saw the television motorbike go on ahead!

"I might have been stronger if I'd have ridden the Tour, but maybe not as fresh. You can't really tell, because you look at Geraint Thomas who gave everything today and got bronze.

"I was realistic about today because my time trial isn't what it was . It's a young man's game!"

  230. Gold Medal

Max Whitlock (England) - Men's Floor

But the judges decide Scott Morgan's performance is not as stylish as Max Whitlock's magnificent display. That is gold medal number three for Whitlock, who also has the all-around and team titles in the bag. With the Pommel Horse and Rings finals to come, the 21-year-old could have five golds by the time we call it a night.

Malaysian pair Lai Pei Jing and Peng Soon Chan make light work of their first game against Sri Lankan duo Buwaneka Dullewa and Madushika Beruwalange. They take it 21-13 to take charge of the round of 16 match.

  233. Hockey

    Men's result - Scotland 0-5 Australia

Australia's Matt Gohdes, left, hits the ball past Scotland's Michael Bremner

There's plenty of support for the home team and after being on the backfoot for most of the match, Scotland manage a short but sustained period of pressure in the second half that has Australia scrambling just a bit. It comes to nothing, however, and in the final stages it's the world champions who look threatening once again.

Australia end Group A having scored 22 goals and conceded three in their four matches, and they will face England in the semi-finals on Saturday.

  234. Gymnastics

The noise level goes up a notch inside the Hydro Arena. You know why - Scotland's Dan Keatings is stood on the mat. Every jump, twist and landing is greeted with whoops of delight from the home crowd.

Keatings, who has won two silvers so far, smiles as he finishes with a double twist, but a red flag was also raised for stepping out. It matters as that 0.1 deduction keeps him just out of the silver medal position - and a guaranteed podium finish - with 14.533.

Canada's Scott Morgan is the final athlete to go. Only he can deny Max Whitlock and Daniel Keatings now...

  235. Men's time trial

    Alex Dowsett

England's Commonwealth champion Alex Dowsett, speaking to BBC Sport: "Nobody wanted that more than I did, after the disappointment of not being picked for the Tour de France and the silver in Delhi in 2010.

    2. R Dennis (Aus) +9.30

    3. G Thomas (Wal) +14.04

Further down the field Steve Cummings (England) finishes seventh, David Millar is down in eighth. Nice work from James McLaughlin of Guernsey who comes home 10th inside three minutes of the winner.

  238. Gymnastics

"We rarely see anybody dig as deep as Rohan Dennis did as he crossed the line, but what a fantastic ride by Alex Dowsett to bring it back.

"He measured his own effort and allowed himself to lose some time, knowing he had to keep some back for the final leg. We said that final downhill section would suit him and it did. He took a huge amount out of them there. 10 seconds is an enormous margin."

  243. Gymnastics

    Men's Floor final

Here are the two English boys. Kristian Thomas starts well, finishes well, but uncharacteristically loses his footing midway through his routine. He looks glum and is resigned to a total of 13.366.

Now it's Max Whitlock. Everything this man has done in Glasgow has turned to gold. "Breathtaking gymnastics," screams BBC Sport commentator Matt Baker as Whitlock finishes a perfect routine with a magnificent triple twist. Unsurprisingly the judges give him the score to beat - 15.533 sticks him top of the pile.

"Alex Dowsett is definitely in contention too but he is not looking as smooth as he did earlier. He was in third position at the final check and will just be wanting this to be over. I am afraid to say David Millar has been way off the pace today."

  250. Road Cycling

"England's Alex Dowsett, again hasn't been racing in recent weeks. He is a strong rider and very good at the time trial, but perhaps this course will be a bit too technical for him. I've been hearing reports Wales' Geraint Thomas is pretty tired after the Tour de France. He has had only had three days to recover, so his performance will mostly depend on motivation. But I thought he was the favourite today."

    Geraint Thomas

"It will be tough in the time trial because riders like Scotland's defending Commonwealth champion David Millar and England's Alex Dowsett have had time to prepare and make sure they are in good form.

"It remains to be seen if the miles I have in my legs will be a help or hindrance. I know it's going to hurt, however I ride. I can ride fast and hurt or go slow and hurt."

  312. Road Cycling

    Joanna Rowsell

England's Joanna Rowsell, who finished 13th in the women's time trial, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was tough, we practised the course yesterday and the wind was very strong, today was less windy but the rain poured down at the start, then was stopping and starting.

"I gave it my best but there you go. I was always targeting the track gold rather than two bronzes and that paid off. But it was a good experience and it's been good supporting Emma Pooley in the village this week."

Rowsell, 25, won Commonwealth gold in the 3,000m individual pursuit in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on Friday.

  313. Road Cycling

    Linda Villumsen

New Zealand's time trial gold medallist Linda Villumsen, speaking to BBC Sport: "I have been working for so long, every year at the Olympics or the world championships and am always nearly there but missing something. Today finally everything worked out from start to finish. I can't describe the feeling."

Villumsen finished second in the time trial at Delhi 2010, fourth in the time trial at London 2012, second in the world championship time trials in 2011 and 2013. Hard to begrudge her a trip to the top step.

"I'm really grateful to have had the opportunity to compete for so long, and am grateful to those who have supported me over the past seven or eight years. To get a medal today tops everything."

Pooley has announced that she will retire from cycling at the end of the Commonwealth Games to concentrate on triathlon and marathon running.

  316. Road Cycling

As we scan down the time sheet, it's worth giving a shout out to Welsh teenager Elinor Barker, who narrowly missed out on gold in the points race on the track, for her seventh-place ride.

Scotland's Lucy Coldwell was eighth, but England's Joanna Rowsell finished well adrift in 13th, one place below another talented Welsh youngster, Amy Roberts.

  317. Road Cycling

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"What a great race, but it was the wrong result though! Still, it was a brilliant ride by Linda Villumsen, she is such a good competitor and a worthy winner. There was nothing more Emma Pooley could do, clearly she was in great shape, and it would have been lovely to see her get a gold in her final major time trial but the course didn't quite suit her.

"The ride of the day though was from Katie Archibald - she was was fighting for it all the way through."

    Reaction - England 3-1 Canada

Ashley Jackson took his scoring run to seven goals as England beat Canada 3-1, and they now look likely to face a daunting semi-final against world champions Australia.

    Ashley Jackson of England

"The next step for this group of players is to make a final," said Jackson. "We are ranked fourth in the world and have been very much playing to that ranking, unable to make that next step to get the right result in semi-finals.

"It does not matter who we face, we are confident going into the Australia game. We have lost a few times but we have already beaten them."

  319. Road Cycling

Scotland's Katie Archibald, who finished fifth in the women's time trial, speaking to BBC Sport: "I really liked the country lanes part of the course but I left too much at the end.

"It is a mental game more than anything and I can't kill myself on the flats, that's something to work on I suppose. But there was tremendous support from the crowds. In the busy spots my power went right up."

  320. Road Cycling

The time-trial medallists take their place on three chairs on a podium as they remove cleets and call home to friends and family. It is Linda Villumsen of New Zealand who has the prized middle seat and England's Emma Pooley does not seem to begrudge her her victory, chatting away about the the race.

  321. Diving

English trio Jack Laugher, James Denny and Oliver Dingley are all looking like qualifying among the top places for the men's 3m springboard final.

In the preliminary round, with two of the six dives to go and the top 12 to qualify, Laugher, who won gold in the 1m event on Thursday, is the leading qualifier with Denny third and Dingley fourth while Scotland's James Heatley is seventh and also looks like going through safely.

  322. Road Cycling

"We said that downhill section running back into Glasgow would favour Linda Villumsen, still we were hoping Emma Pooley would emulate her performance in Beijing in 2008 and produce a strong descent but you cannot deny your physiology.

"It was out-and-out power that won the day. We thought Pooley might have got enough of a buffer but it proved not to be the case."

  324. Gold medal

Linda Villumsen (New Zealand) - Women's time trial

    Linda Villumsen of New Zealand

In the end Linda Villumsen of New Zealand found the eight seconds she was missing at the final checkpoint and another six as well to finish relatively comfortably clear of England's Emma Pooley.

Pooley, five foot and not a lot, just lacked the bulk and power to descend as quick as her rival on the final downhill section.

  325. Road Cycling

Emma Pooley steams through the finishline in a time of 42.31.29 . All eyes now on Linda Villumsen to see if the New Zealander can make up those missing eight seconds on the final section.

  326. Road Cycling

Scotland's Katie Archibald is roared down the final straight but she has paid for the effort laid down earlier on the course.

"Katie Archibald is just out of the medals but only by a few seconds and she will still be in the hunt for bronze. But Emma Pooley and Linda Villumsen are a long way ahead and they will be fighting it out for the gold and silver."

The first rider is home. Antri Christoforou of Cyprus returns in 46:53.93. She will be toppled off the top of the standings very soon.

Meanwhile back on the course, the riders are chugging through the second checkpoint. England's Joanna Rowsell shows no sign of pulling herself into contention after a slow first section. She is 25 seconds off Australian Katrin Garfoot and looks out of it.

Scotland's Katie Archibald isn't though. She was two and a half seconds off Shara Gillow in third at the first time check and has just gone quickest through the second with her Aussie rival still to arrive.

  340. Road Cycling

    Women's time trial

There are three checkpoints on the course - at 6.4km, 17.1km and 23.2km - and it is Scotland's Lucy Coldwell who is fastest through the first of those so far.

The 30-year-old was based in Melbourne, Australia between 2010 and 2013, racing with the Holden Cycling Team while working as a vet.

She returned to base herself in Scotland ahead of Glasgow 2014.

  351. Diving

    Men's 3m Springboard Preliminary

Jack Laugher takes an early lead after this morning's first round of dives at the Royal Commonwealth Pool with a mark of 81.60, ahead of compatriot Oliver Dingley. The top 12 qualify for the final.

  352. Road Cycling

England's Joanna Rowsell is the 19th rider out, picking her way gingerly around the puddles on the opening few corners. Tucked in tight, she is pushing a big old gear. It's enough to make your quads ache just watching.

  353. Road Cycling

England's Emma Pooley, speaking to BBC Sport: "I always race the time trial just on feeling. You know you are pushing hard enough when it hurts, and you've just got to ride hard for as long you can. This course suits me a lot better than the Delhi course of four years ago, which was just a dead flat bit of motorway.

"Whatever happens this week I can retire content with what I have achieved in this sport. I never even expected to be a cyclist, so I can be pleased with what I have done."

  354. Road Cycling

    Women's time trial

It is not quite the packed streets of Sheffield or the teeming masses of Holme Moss, but there is a decent crowd out to hammer palms against boards and send the women's time-triallers on their way from Glasgow Green.

Just a shade under 30km for the riders to negotiate. It begins with a 14km circuit taking riders along Argyle Street, Buchanan Street and St Vincent Street before carrying on to the west end of the city, through Kelvingrove Park and a loop around the west end before heading back home.

    Sounds scenic if twisty.

  355. Hockey

    Men's latest - England 3-0 Canada

It's taken seven attempts but England finally convert from a penalty corner, and after clearly trying out a few different routines and ball strikers, it's regular goalscorer Ashley Jackson who does the business. There is as much drama above the pitch as on it, with another torrential downpour followed by bright sunshine. Watch the (hockey) action here.

    Bowls - Jersey v Australia

BBC Jersey Sport: "What a start for #TeamJersey they lead 4-0 against Australia in this pairs quarter final"

It has all gone a little wrong since Team Jersey's fast start. The Channel islanders trail Australia 10-8 as it stands.

  358. Road cycling

    Chris Boardman

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"We walked down to the finish in t-shirts but it has poured with rain since then and that will change the race. It is a very technical course, there is hardly any flat, and in sections the road surface is poor. It is what we call a roadman's course.

"In the women's race Emma Pooley is the favourite, this course suits her perfectly, they could not have made a better circuit for her in her retirement year. I'm hearing she is feeling nervous but I think she will come through. She knows how to deal with pressure.

"For Joanna Rowsell, I think the course will be too technical. It's hard to switch between the effort she does on the track and the road, especially with the weather how it is today. I can see the same problem for Scotland' Katie Archiebald. It's a different type of effort to what she's used to on the track."

  359. Road Cycling

    Plink, plink, peeeep!

The electronic countdown ticks down to release the first of the riders down the ramp in the women's time trial.

Cyprus' Antri Christoforou is the lady in question, wearing a bright green teardrop helmet.

The chasers are set off at intervals of one minute. Notable riders to look out for are England's Joanna Rowsell at 10:19, Wales' Elinor Barker at 10:26, Scotland's Katie Archibald at 10:27 and England's Emma Pooley at 10;31.

  360. Hockey

    Men's latest - England 2-0 Canada

The sun is out following that earlier downpour at the National Hockey Centre, and England extend their lead through Barry Middleton. England have had 17 shots to none from Canada, who lost 6-0 to New Zealand earlier in the week. Something for both sides to aim for.

That's it, England's Liam Pitchford and Tin-Tin Ho need four match points but they wrap up a 11-5 11-9 11-8 win over the New Zealanders to reach the last eight.

"Don't expect them to give it to you," says coach Alan Cooke after three match points go begging, and Pitchford seals it with a forehand. Big smiles from both players at the end, 15-year-old Ho bounding off to a big reception from the Glasgow crowd.

  363. Diving

    Men's 3m springboard, preliminaries (10:05 BST)

England's Jack Laugher, a gold medallist already at these Commonwealth Games after victory in the 1m springboard event, turns his attention to the 3m competition today.

He will be hoping to perform better in this event than he did at the 2012 Olympics.

    Jack Laugher

There was no laughter from Laugher as he misjudged his final dive in the preliminary round in London and entered the water feet first.

Other divers competing today include English duo James Denny and James Heatly and Scotland's Oliver Dingley, with 12 of the 17 men advancing to this evening's final. Watch live coverage of the diving here.

  364. Wrestling

There is plenty of wrestling on offer today for grapple fans of all nationalities.

England's Philip Roberts is in one of the first matches of the day taking on Pakistan's Muhammad Salman for a place in the quarter-finals of the men's freestyle 65kg class.

Wales's Oliver Cole up at 86kg, will follow on the matt as he battles South Africa's Armando Hietbrink.

The action starts at 10:00 BST and you can watch live on this very website.

  365. Table Tennis

    Mixed doubles

England's Liam Pitchford and Tin-Tin Ho move two games up and close in on a quarter-final place against Karen Li and Tengteng Liu of New Zealand, Li tapping herself on the head with her bat in frustration as they head to the changeover.

  366. Bowls

After six ends of the bronze medal match in the open triples B6/B7/B8 event, we are all square as it is England 5, Scotland 5.

Elsewhere, in the men's quarter-finals, Northern Ireland's Martin McHugh holds an 11-5 lead against Scotland's indoor world champion Darren Burnett, with England's Sam Tolchard trailing 6-5 to Shannon McIlroy of New Zealand.

In the women's pairs quarter-finals, Jersey were 4-0 up after the first end, but are now 7-4 behind against Australia.

As "bad examples" go, Australian figurehead Sally Pearson's decision to race in London to build her fitness, hardly seems to be up at George Best-levels of wanton irresponsibility.

But, as Australia captain, should the Olympic 100m hurdles champion have put her team-mates above her own personal preparation and put in some face-time at a pre-Games training camp?

    Sally Pearson

Australia's Commonwealth Games team chiefs are about to meet the media to "reveal all" about the suspension of Athletics Australia head coach Eric Hollingsworth following his criticism of Olympic 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson.

Hollingsworth said Pearson was a "bad example" for not attending Games team camp in July and choosing to race in London. Pearson opted to compete in the capital to build up her race fitness having recently returned from a hamstring injury.

Athletics team captain Pearson, 27, who won gold at London 2012 and the world title in 2011, begins the defence of her title on Thursday.

  370. Table Tennis

    Mixed doubles

Liam Pitchford and 15-year-old Tin-Tin Ho

Table tennis is the third sport to get under way on day eight in Glasgow, with the fourth round of the mixed doubles tournament first up. The home nations are represented by four English pairs in the last 16, among them Liam Pitchford and 15-year-old Tin-Tin Ho.

"I think we have a great chance for a medal," says Pitchford. "We are a new pairing, it's the first time we've played together. We have the makings of a good doubles team."

  371. Hockey

    Men's latest - England 0-0 Canada

England have enjoyed the best of the opening exchanges against Canada, but despite mustering eight shots to their opponents none, they have not forced the breakthrough just yet.

Not that they need to. Barring a seven-goal defeat England will be assured a place in the semi-finals.

    Athletes on Twitter

    Usain Bolt and Jade Lewis

Wales judoka Jade Lewis: "Can't believe I actually met Usain Bolt in the athletes' village! Absolutely chuffed!"

Scotland gymnast Dan Keatings: "Floor and pommel final today! Really can't wait to set foot in that arena again! The hype is unreal!"

That looks like the fixed grin of a man who spent yesterday at the centre of a media storm over a disputed Games slur.

  373. Road Cycling

Also taking part in the men's time trial today is Northern Ireland's Michael Hutchinson, who has spent more time on the other side of the crash barriers as a journalist and author in recent years before donning the lycra again for Glasgow 2014.

His tweets on his experience have made interesting reading.

"Going from being journalist at the London Olympics, the Giro and the Tour to being competitor again in Glasgow is a slightly odd feeling. It's like I've retired back to front or something," he writes.

"TT course last km includes a bend on a section of paving slabs. It's a TTer trap. If it rains, we're all going to end up in one big heap.

"I'm off 4th from end at 14.25. 'Warning: green and white bollard on the course.'."

  374. Road Cycling

Former Commonwealth and Olympic cycling road race champion Nicole Cooke, speaking to BBC Breakfast: "The course for the time trial today is what we call a mixed course, which means it is good for an all-round time trialist. It has a bit of everything and we should see the home nations do particularly well.

"In the women's time trial England's Emma Pooley is in great form, and this will be her last one before retiring so she will be as motivated as possible.

"In the men's event England's Alex Dowsett won Commonwealth silver in the Delhi games of 2010, so can he turn that into gold here? For Wales, Geraint Thomas has just come out of the Tour de France, so let's hope the Welsh jersey inspires him today."

The women's cycling time trial gets underway at 10:00 BST this morning, while the men's event starts at 12:31.

  375. Bowls

Another day of the Commonwealth Games means another day of lawn bowls action. And the men's singles is getting serious, with the four quarter-finals being held at Kelvingrove.

    Sam Tolchard

Scotland's world indoor champion Darren Burnett, who normally works as a policeman in Arbroath, faces Martin McHugh of Northern Ireland, while Sam Tolchard (pictured), part of the England duo that won a pairs bronze medal on Monday, faces New Zealand's Shannon McIlroy.

The other ties see 63-year-old Harry Musonda of Zambia take on Ryan Bester of Canada and Australia's Aron Sherriff plays commentator's nightmare Muhammad Hizlee Abdul Rais of Malaysia.

It is also the quarter-finals of the women's pairs with Jersey, Northern Ireland, England and Wales all in action, while the open triples B6/B7/B8 medal matches see England v Scotland for the bronze, and South Africa v New Zealand for the gold.

The finest cuts of audio-visual entertainment for Glasgow 2014? You are in luck we have had a fresh delivery just this morning.

Clear the dancefloor. Weightlifter David Katoatau breaks out some sweet moves after winning Kiribati's first ever Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Belly-flop with pike. Malaysian diver Ahmad Amsyar Azman ends up falling "flat on his face" in the preliminary round of the men's 1m springboard.

  377. Wednesday's action

Elsewhere yesterday, England's Claudia Fragapane won the women's all-around final to maintain England's gymnastic domination after Max Whitlock's victory in the men's competition.

Northern Ireland are guaranteed at least nine medals in the ring at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games after five more boxers, including light-flyweight Paddy Barnes and flyweight Michaela Walsh, reached the semi-finals.

There was disappointment for Wales' Dai Greene, however, as his 400m hurdles title defence ended in the first round as his lack of preparation in an injury-hit season caught up with him.

  378. Hockey

    Men's Group B - England v Canada

Alastair Brogdon and Barry Middleton of England

England's men must pick themselves up after their disappointing defeat by New Zealand two days ago and complete the job of qualifying for the semi-finals. They should not slip up, with Canada requiring a seven-goal victory to overhaul them, but with New Zealand equally unlikely to falter against Malaysia, it looks like second place is the best England can hope for. That will mean a semi-final against Australia, the world champions.

"It would be nice to beat the favourites, wouldn't it?" said captain Barry Middleton. "People try to avoid the best team but if we have to play them so be it. We still have to make it to the semi-final and if it is Australia we'll give it all we got."

Chris Woolaston: Greg Rutherford is a star. Olympic champion, world champion, now this. It's great to see all the home nations doing well.

Shane Sowersby: So pleased for Greg to win gold. Certainly made up for last year's disappointment at the worlds. Shows that the Olympic success was not a flash in the pan. And getting the British record earlier in the year, which was ratified, proved he was back on track.

England's Rutherford, 27, won Commonwealth gold in the long jump on Thursday, adding to the Olympic gold he won in 2012.

  380. Post update

    BBC Radio 5 live

Longer term, Greg Rutherford wants to see if he can make his runway speed stick on ice though, with a plan to try skeleton at the Winter Olympics.

"Ultimately I'll be a long jumper first and foremost but I am going to give skeleton a go at some point," Rutherford told BBC Radio 5 live.

"Then if I'm good enough I'll do a little bit of training alongside my long jumping and if I can I'd love to go to the winter Olympics and win a medal there too."

Only four other people have won winter and summer Olympic medals apparently. It's one exclusive club.

  381. Athletics

    Athlete reaction

England's Commonwealth long jump champion Greg Rutherford, speaking to BBC Breakfast: "Two weeks ago at the Diamond League here I had a bad nerve response in my spine. I had been managing it all year but all of a sudden it hit me and I was struck down with pain in my knee and hamstring. I had an epidural to help with it and it worked, the doctors have been fantastic.

    Greg Rutherford

"You do push your body to its ultimate limits, there is always a risk you are going to be hurt. Sadly last year I had nothing but injuries, but for it all to finally come back together here is a really big deal, I am over the moon.

"I can't let it slip now. I've got the European championships in two and a half weeks, so there is no time for partying or celebration yet. In terms of the next Olympics in Rio, I'll be 29, which is a good age for long jumpers. I hope to still be in peak condition and retain my title."

  382. Wednesday's action

    Greg Rutherford

There was a heavy sense of deja-vu to last night's action at Hampden Park.

Greg Rutherford came into the long jump final unfancied, the Englishman having suffered injury in the build-up and requiring an epidural injection to ease the pain through qualifying.

But in an echo of Super Saturday at London 2012, he pulled a leap of 8.20m out of the bag to pocket gold.

  383. Diving

    Jack Laugher

England's Jack Laugher is on the second leg of a possible hat-trick of golds after winning the 1m springboard title on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old goes in the 3m springboard preliminaries at 10:05 BST this morning ahead of tonight's final at 18:05 BST. He will also compete in the 3m synchronised event tomorrow.

  384. Post update

    Max whitlock

After England's Max Whitlock's stellar 90+ point performance delivered all-around gold yesterday, he will be hoping to add the specialist titles for floor, pommel and rings to his tally. They begin at 15:00 BST, 16:36 BST and 18:12 BST respectively.

Olympic silver medalist, team-mate and still probably "face of the sport" Louis Smith will be one of Whitlock's opponents on the pommel, making his comeback to major competition after a long and leisurely sabbatical post London 2012.

  385. Athletics

    David Rudisha

Later today there will be more high-profile medals to be won.

Olympic champion and world record holder David Rudisha may be hot favourite for 800m gold but Botswana's Nigel Amos beat the great Kenyan at the Diamond League event in Monaco earlier this month.

Racing spikes are drawn at 19:50 BST this evening at Hampden Park.

  386. Bowls

    Bowls

There is always a sleeper hit of a sport at a Games. At London 2012 it was handball, at pretty much every Winter Olympics the nation develops an itch for curling.

At Glasgow 2014, it may just be bowls. It may be more sensible socks and roll than rock and roll, but it worked its old school charm on our man on the ground.

The first medal action of the day comes on the emerald lawns of Kelvingrove bowls club.

England and Scotland scrap for bronze in the Open triples B6/B7/B8 category while South Africa and New Zealand fight for the top step.

  387. Post update

The multi-talented Emma Pooley will be the penultimate rider off the ramp at Glasgow Green shortly after 10:30 BST, with only New Zealand's Linda Villumsen to follow.

She will be trying to beat times set by the likes of England team-mate Joanna Rowsell, Wales' Elinor Barker and Scotland's Katie Archibald.

And it will be Glasgow's chance to prove they can beat Yorkshire's enthusiasm for all things two wheels. The action gets under way at 10:00.

  388. Post update

    Emma Pooley

The Commonwealth Games might be the end of Emma Pooley's cycling career, but it probably won't be the last you hear of her.

After a career that has stretched from an Olympic silver in 2008 to a trio of stage wins in the Giro Rosa earlier this month, the 31-year-old Englishwoman will park up her bike after competing in this morning's time trial and Sunday's road race.

But only to concentrate on marathons and triathlons.

She was one of the 20 fastest British women over 26.2 miles in 2013 and came third in a half-Ironman in the Philippines in February.

And if all that doesn't work out she only has a Phd in geotechnical engineering to fall back on.
