Football's loss, Jazz's gain

Although Gregory Porter wrote his first jazz song when was just six years old, his road to jazz stardom was long and winding.

He left school with an athletic scholarship to San Diego State University but a shoulder injury during his freshman year brought his American football career to an abrupt halt.

During rehab after his injury Gregory found solace singing in the local jazz clubs. It was during one of those jams that he was spotted by a talent scout and ultimately cast in a musical which made it to Broadway.

Gaining Grammy nominations with his first two albums, he finally won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, for his third album Liquid Spirit.

His recent sublime Radio 2 performance of Sam Cooke's You Send Me left Chris Evans almost speechless. We have no doubt that he'll wow the Hyde Park crowd with his beautiful soulful vocals.
