A museum is preparing to welcome its three millionth visitor since re-opening nearly six years ago.

The Great North Museum Hancock in Newcastle will reach the landmark this week during the school half-term holidays.

The museum, managed by Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums on behalf of Newcastle University, opened in 2009 after a £26m overhaul.

The three millionth visitor will be given a goody bag.

Iain Watson, director of Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums said: "The museum is an important part of the North East's cultural history and many people from the region have fond memories of visiting the museum since childhood."
