FT: France 1-3 Brazil

All four UK teams and the Republic of Ireland have never qualified for the same European Championship. Could that be a step closer? The picture will become a little clearer after this weekend - find out how they currently stand in their qualifying groups.

Although hosts France don't have to worry about it, plenty of other nations are worrying about Euro 2016 qualification - particularly the Home Nations. Here are the weekend's fixtures...

El Don Carter: Neymar can be a Brazil great definitely. His records at 23 is staggering, he only needs to win few trophies and that's it.

Meanwhile, France will look to bounce back from this sobering defeat when they return to the Stade de France on Sunday. Denmark will be the opposition.

So the France and Brazil players will be enjoying a well-earned post-match scrub before going back to the team hotel to chill out in front of the telly later.

But then it will be back to the grind for all of them on Sunday. Brazil take on South American rivals Chile in a friendly. In London, of course. And guess what? You will not miss a kick in our live text coverage of that match at the Emirates Stadium.

So what have we learned from those 90 minutes in Paris? In a nutshell, France don't look anywhere near good enough to win Euro 2016 at the moment. Brazil are nowhere near finished as a footballing force. And Premier League managers can sleep well tonight knowing none of their players have picked up knocks.

And there it is. Italian ref Nicola Rizzoli toots his whistle for the final time tonight, ending France's misery against a very happy Brazilian squad.

The game is petering out to a close now, neither side is creating anything. A midfield snooze-fest while we wait for the whistle.

Here's the fourth official again - he's been the star of the show in the last 10 minutes. Real Madrid left-back Marcelo appears for his first appearance in a Selecao shirt since the World Cup.

The fourth official hoists his electronic board into the air again - but not for a substitution. This time he is telling us that there will be four minutes of stoppage time. Four minutes for France to claim an unlikely draw.

This match is like a spluttering motor with a learner driver at the wheel. Stop, start. Stop, start. More subs, this time for Brazil, as Firmino is swapped for Luiz Adriano, before Manchester City's Fernandinho comes on for the final finale.

Not much action on the pitch at the moment - it is all on the touchline. Jose Mourinho will be pleased to see Chelsea midfielder Oscar given a short breather in place of Souza.

This match is beginning to become very stop start. Brazil's Douglas Costa replaces Willian, while Olivier Giroud - making his first France appearance since the World Cup - appears in place of Blaise Matuidi.

And here is the said France substitution. Marseille forward Dimitri Payet trots on for Mathieu Valbuena.

France look to be preparing another change as Brazil midfielder Oscar clatters into PSG's Blaise Matuidi. That one was for PSG knocking Chelsea out of the Champions League...

Fair play to the French fans - I can't see many escaping the Stade de France for an early dash to the Paris Metro. But their team need a goal - sharpish - if they are going to salvage something here.

France waste a free-kick in a promising position on the left, Mathieu Valbuena overcooking his pass as the ball drifts out for a goal kick. That raises a smile from ex-Brazil striker Ronaldo, who is sat in the gantry as he returns to the Stade de France - the scene of one of the lowest days of his stellar career of course.

Remarkably for an international friendly, it has taken until the final quarter of the match for the changes to start rolling. France make a double change as they search for an equaliser, Lyon wonderkid Nabil Fekir and Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia entering the action in place of Newcastle's Moussa Sissoko and Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid.

Folabi Shobowale: 3-1 to Brazil against France, shocking defending from the French for that third goal. So much work left to do for Deschamps.

Virtual silence in a shell-shocked Stade de France. And not because Luis Gustavo - not known for his goalscoring prowess - is the man who has bagged. France coach Didier Deschamps looks incredulous, muttering something unrepeatable - I assume - under his breath.

And here they come again. Willian is first to the ball and with one thought on his mind. His clever low strike is saved by the very busy France keeper Steve Mandanda.

But France do look vulnerable at the back. Steve Mandanda is needed again to claw away a Neymar shot. Corner to Brazil...

Time to see if France are the ones that I want (in the office Euro 2016 sweepstake). The hosts are expecting to challenge for the continental championship in about 15 months' time. But you would think they would have to show more cutting edge if they are to win a third European title.

Ooooh la la! France almost have a goal to purr over. Antoine Griezmann shows neater footwork than Danny Zuko to wriggle into space, before arrowing a long-range drive towards the target. But the ball whistles just over....

Encouraging signs from the French as they try to haul themselves back on terms. The home crowd, including one bloke who has a Homer Simpson banner, are stretching their vocal chords again as Les Bleus attack....

Time to roll out that old 'like London buses' line - because three France chances have just pulled up at the Stade de France. First, Thiago Silva has to be alert to put a dangerous cross out for a corner, then Moussa Sissoko sees his angled drive smothered by Brazil keeper Jefferson. Finally, France skipper Karim Benzema lashes a wild volley high over the crossbar. He really should have scored there.

The visitors are having some joy here. Another low centre from the right flank is cut out by Morgan Schneiderlin's sliding tackle, before Firmino's header bounces wide.

Brazil right-back Danilo pounds forward down the flank, only to see his cross cut out by the French defence.

France, unbeaten since their World Cup exit remember, look relatively assured at the back. Liverpool centre-back Mamadou Sakho holds off Neymar to marshal a hopeful punt from Brazil back into the safety of Steve Mandanda's hands.

Now it is the turn of France keeper Steve Mandanda to feel leather on his gloves. The Marseille man drops sharply to his right, sticking out a big glove to fend off Luis Gustavo's fierce drive from outside the French area.

France start on the front foot. Les Bleus win a free-kick about 30 yards out, with Dynamo Moscow creative midfielder Mathieu Valbuena standing over the ball. But he wastes the set-piece. Valbuena floats the ball into the area, over the heads of his team-mates, and into Jefferson's hands.

Chile are the hosts of this summer's Copa America - the South American football championship.

Their preparations will continue with a friendly against Brazil in London on Sunday. But they haven't gone all that well at the NV Arena in Austria, where they have just lost 2-0 against Iran.

Javad Nekounam and Vahid Amiri were the goalscorers for Iran.

Sort of. Radamel Falcao has hardly been in the goals recently but he scored twice in five minutes while captaining Colombia in their 6-0 win against Bahrain.

Falcao has now scored 23 goals in 55 internationals, while Carlos Bacca, Adrian Ramos, Johan Mojica and Andres Renteria were also on the scoresheet.

I wonder what that brace will do for the confidence of the on-loan Manchester United striker?

For much of the opening 45 minutes, it was Les Bleus who were in control and posing the most attacking threat. But once Brazil found a bit more confidence with their final ball, pretty much only in the last five minutes, they were the ones looking likeliest to head in for a half-time cuppa with an advantage.

Peep, peep, peep! That's the sound of Italian ref Nicola Rizzoli's half-time whistle - and it is music to the ears of the French.

France are desperately trying to claw their way back into this match before the break. But they're struggling. One minute of stoppage time to go...

Brazil are well on top after the equaliser. The yellow shirts are buzzing around the pitch, like a swarm of bees chasing pollen. Can they nick another before half-time? Don't rule it out.

I'm going to be honest here - I've not got much to tell you. The Mexican wave has stopped. Brazil are still shading possession. But France still lead. On we go...

But those French cheers turn to jeers as the Brazilians hog possession. Sidewards pass, tentative ball forward, retreat. That's the general pattern of the away side's play.

Until, that is, one ball forward down the right touchline releases Willian. But the Chelsea man's cross is too close to France keeper Steve Mandanda, who jumps to gather easily.

These French fans know how to enjoy themselves at a mid-season friendly. Little over half an hour in and the Mexican wave has started. Now that is one bit of fun guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of the sternest of sports fan.

Alfred: Neymar has got a lot to learn in football. Making him the captain of Brazil doesn't help matters.

Respite for the Brazilians. Neymar wins a free-kick about 25 yards out. Firmino stings the palms of France keeper Steve Mandanda when he lashes one goalwards from distance.

That forces a left-wing corner which Mandanda comes to gather, only to be hustled off the ball by Thiago Silva in mid-air. But there is no Brazilian on hand to force the ball in.

Brazil don't look comfortable defending set pieces at all. But they just about get their act together on this occasion as Thiago Silva heads out.

Slick passing from the French, who are starting to find their groove. PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi's angled shot from 18 yards hits a yellow shirt and spins out for another home corner. Remember what happened last time....

"Allez Les Bleus" is the chant ringing around the Stade de France as the home side spring forward again. But Bacary Sagna's curling cross from the right cannot find a blue shirt. Instead it finds the forehead of Brazil centre-back Danilo, who butts it clear.

Let's see what Brazil have got in the locker. Neymar desperately tries to wriggle clear of the home defence, twisting and turning on the edge of the French box. But he is soon robbed of the ball and France break again...

Chance! Neymar! Goal? No.

Brazil pounce on a sloppy pass from Morgan Schneiderlin, putting Neymar through. But his curling effort is pushed clear by Steve Mandanda.

Very quiet inside the Stade de France as Brazil win their first corner of the evening. But a Les Bleus shirt is perfectly positioned to head clear Filipe Luis's set-piece.

I thought I was sat at St James' Park for a moment then. That's because energetic Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko picks up the ball in his own half, before trying to kickstart a French half with a quick burst. How many times have we seen that? But the move breaks down and Brazil win back possession.

No real pattern has developed to this match so far. Brazil quite happy to sit back, be patient and then spring forward when they sense an opportunity.

Neymar is the driving force behind this Brazil side, so it is not surprising to see him power forward on the attack. The Barca forward selflessly rolls the ball square to his right where Firmino is in support. But his 20-yard shot is tame and easily gathered by Les Blues keeper Steve Mandanda.

Uh oh. Jose Mourinho will be watching nervously. Chelsea winger Willian crumbles to the lush turf after tangling with Mathieu Valbuena, with what appears to be an ankle injury. He is helped up to his feet by a couple of Brazil team-mates - he's alright. Phew, says Jose.

Low key start as Brazil enjoy plenty of early possession - to the chagrin of the home crowd. Whistles greet every touch from a yellow shirt as they patiently knock the ball around on the halfway line.

Referee Nicola Rizzoli quickly tots up the numbers of the players on the greener-than-an-apple green pitch, is happy there are 22 men out there, then peeps his whistle. Brazil get the ball rolling.

In the case the Paris crowd needed reminding about the 1998 World Cup final, a few men have just strided on to the Stade de France pitch to remind them.

Les Blues heroes Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane, Marcel Desailly and Patrick Vieira - who have all won over 100 caps - wave to their adoring public.

Wouldn't mind those four being in my five-a-side team...

Of course, that night will also be unforgettable for this....

"We have just had the surprise news, I suppose the shock news, that Ronaldo will not be in the Brazil XI for tonight's match."

Those were the words of BBC presenter Des Lynam when it emerged that Brazil's star striker Ronaldo would not start for the Selecao against France in the 1998 showpiece.

"Desmond, I've never had anything like this in my career. The scenes in the commentary box for the last 45 minutes have been absolutely mayhem. Journalists and commentators are racing around trying to find out the truth," added commentator John Motson.

The camera pans to Pele. He looks ashen-faced.

Then we go to Gary Lineker on the gantry: "News has just come out that it is the biggest wind-up in World Cup history - because Ronaldo will play. There has been a big mistake in the teamsheet."

Later, much later, Lineker went to meet Ronaldo to find out what exactly happened....

France. Brazil. The Stade de France. What immediately springs to mind? The 1998 World Cup final (for those of us old enough to remember it at least).

A Zinedine Zidane header, another Zinedine Zidane header, then a wonderful finish from Emmanuel Petit in the closing stages, helped the French become world champions for the first time. And in front of a partisan home crowd for good measure.

And tonight there will be a sense of deja vu for the respective captains on that balmy night.

Because France's Didier Deschamps and Brazil counterpart Dunga will shake hands again before kick-off, this time on the touchline as the pair now coach their national sides.

Brazil will not be a pushover for the French tonight, insists Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps.

"They are reeling from a World Cup that was not unsuccessful despite the trauma they went through - they were still in the semi-finals," says the ex-Chelsea midfielder.

"I have seen what they have been doing since then and I saw many many very good things."

So, you surely know all about Neymar and anyone watching Chelsea this season will be aware of the skills of Filipe Luis, Oscar and Willian.

But what about other members of the Brazil side?

Roberto Firmino is a 23-year-old midfielder who plays for German side Hoffenheim. He will be making his first start for Brazil after he came off the bench and smashed in a 25-yard strike to score the winner in a 2-1 friendly win against Austria in November.

Elias, who has had a spell at Atletico Madrid, is a 29-year-old midfielder currently playing for Brazilian side Corinthians.

Danilo, 23, (pictured) is a highly-rated right-back playing for Portuguese side Porto. He was in the Brazilian squad that won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics.

Centre-half Miranda, 30, missed out on the World Cup squad after being named as one of the standby players. Last season he helped Atletico Madrid win La Liga.

Brazil are still a great team "no matter what" despite their World Cup disaster, says France captain-for-the-night Karim Benzema.

"After the World Cup, Brazil have recovered," adds the Real Madrid man.

"They have been scoring freely and have not conceded much. There is no favourite for this game."

Of course, Germany also proved to be France's nemesis on Brazilian soil last summer.

Les Bleus coasted through the group phase, cruised past Nigeria in the second round - then produced a limp display against the Germans in the quarter-finals.

But since that 1-0 defeat, the Euro 2016 hosts have not been beaten. Didier Deschamps' men are looking to continue their fine run following wins against Spain, Portugal and Sweden.

Thiago: Ronaldinho and henry, those two were gods of their country

Dean MUFC Ellis: roberto carlos and Zidane. Carlos was a amazing left back and could score amazing goals. Zidane was just a god.

James Layhe: Lucio. Great leader and could play with the ball at his feet. Performed at every level. Great footballer.

Thomas Albert Webb: Zidane and Ronaldo, because both could change a game in an instant! And both could play and score with either foot!

Cast your minds back to the summer. Go on, it is not that long ago.

Because the 2014 World Cup is probably the last time that most of you watched these teams in action.

And it is unlikely that you will ever forget Brazil's exit. The Selecao suffered a humiliating 7-1 semi-final defeat by Germany in the World Cup semi-final, but have begun to rebuild under new manager Dunga.
