  1. Champions League takes centre stage

    Football

That's it for another day, apart from the small matter of afalse

We have brought you all the reaction to Neil Warnock's return as Crystal Palace manager and all the latest transfer stories involving Fernando Torres, Federico Fazio, James McArthur and Jordan Rhodes.

We've also been right across a pretty dismal day for England's cricket team and we'll be back tomorrow with the draw for the Champions League group stage where Arsenal will hope to be in the hat for the 17th year in a row and the announcement of England's new captain.

  2. Deeney signs news deal at Watford

    Football

Watford captain Troy Deeney has signed a new four-year deal at Vicarage Road to end any chance of a pre-deadline move.

The striker had attracted reported interest this summer from Hull, Leicester and Burnley but has now committed himself to the Championship club.

  3. India go 1-0 up in series

    Cricket

India complete a crushing 133-run win over England in Cardiff to take a 1-0 lead in the one-day series.

After rattling up 304-6, India then bowled out England for just 161 as they chased a revised target of 295.

It's on to Trent Bridge now for Saturday's next instalment of what is now a four-match series and England will have to bat a lot better.

    James Anderson congratulations

  4. Alonso calls it a day with Spain

    Football

Real Madrid's former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has announced his retirement from international football.

Alonso bows out after Spain's dismal defence of their World Cup crown in Brazil.

However, the 32-year-old hangs up his boots with a World Cup and two European Championships (2008 and 2012) to his name.

Xabi Alonso and Diego Costa in training with Spain

"I announce my retirement from international football. It's been an enormous honour for 11 great years. Sincere thanks to everyone involved," Alonso said on Twitter.

Rian Hoskins: Warnock would have been good for Palace in the Championship. But it is a risk considering he hasn't kept a BPL team up before.

Andrew Priestley: Last year Crystal Palace got their appointment just right with Pulis, this year they've got it all wrong with Neil Warnock.

  6. Woakes mounts last stand for England

    Cricket

The end is nigh for England who have put up a pretty dismal fight at Cardiff.

India's slow bowlers have maintained their grip with Ben Stokes holing out on the boundary and Chris Jordan trapped plumb in front for a duck.

It's 141-8 and, not for the first time this summer, the crowd may feel a bit short-changed.

Chris Woakes tries to liven it up, though, as he survives a dropped chance by hammering a six over long on.

  7. 'Let's do it,' says Wenger

    Football

The Champions League group stage draw beckons and Sportsday will have it tomorrow from 16.45BST.

Not surprisingly, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is determined to be in it - again.

"For us the Champions League is very important. We want to play at the top level, at international level," said Wenger (below) ahead of tonight's qualifying round second leg against Besiktas with the tie balanced at 0-0.

    Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger

"Nothing is unthinkable - it (not qualifying for the group stage) has happened to 99% of all the big clubs in Europe.

"But we want to be in there and we think we have the potential to do it. The task is clear and we know we can do it. So let's do it."

  8. India closing in on victory

    Cricket

Another nail in the coffin for England, it would appear, as Eoin Morgan perishes for 28 to leave England on 119-6.

Morgan and Ben Stokes were just starting to look as though they might provide some entertainment when Morgan fails to clear the ropes with a slog-sweep and gives Ravindra Jadeja another wicket.

Another 176 to win at over ten an over looks an impossible task.

Keep checking, though, via our live text commentary.

  9. Warnock's point to prove

    Football

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish says Neil Warnock joins the club with "unfinished business" in the Premier League.

Warnock, 65, joins the club for the second time having left in 2010 but has never kept a side in the Premier League despite being in a position of safety before being sacked by QPR in January 2012.

    Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish

"It felt a good fit," Parish (above) tells Sky Sports. "We want to put some succession planning in place. Hopefully we can sit down at the end of the season and plan a future for the club rather than fire fighting."

  10. Ryder Cup race is on

    Golf

    Stephen Gallagher

European captain Paul McGinley will leave it to the last minute to decide on his Ryder Cup wild cards and admits "something spectacular" could yet influence his decision.

Scotland's Stephen Gallacher (pictured) is the only player who can move into the automatic qualifying places by finishing first or second in the final counting event, this week's Italian Open.

The Deutsche Bank Championship - which does not count towards qualifying - is also underway in Boston and good form there could prove influential says McGinley, who announces his three wildcard choices on Tuesday.

"There are a few players here who could win or do very well and really give themselves the best possible chance of a pick," says McGinley. "I want to see guys bursting over the line this week."

  11. Question of Sport Teaser answer

Earlier we asked you - courtesy of our good friends at Question of Sport - since 2000, which eight players whose surnames end in a Y have made their ODI debut for @ECB_cricket?

The answer: Gareth Batty, Michael Carberry, Joe Denly, Harry Gurney, Robert Key, James Kirtley, Stephen Parry and Michael Yardy.

Well done if you got it right.

  12. Degenkolb

    Road cycling

Germany's John Degenkolb wins the stage for the second day running in the Vuelta a Espana.

France's Nacer Bouhanni claims he is blocked off by Degenkolb in a sprint for the line at the end of 180km stage ride from Priego de Cordoba to Ronda.

But Bouhanni has to accept second place with Moreno Hofland of the Netherlands in third.

Australia's Michael Matthews finished in the leading pack to extend his overall lead over race favourite Nairo Quintana of Colombia to 13 seconds.

  13. Hales' effort ends as India tighten grip

    Cricket

England are chasing a revised target of 295 from 47 overs under the DL method after losing a few overs at the start of their reply but at this rate that's an academic figure as Alex Hales departs.

The debutant top-edges a sweep in Ravindra Jadeja's first over to go for 40 as England struggle to 82-4 after 21 overs.

Jadeja then strikes again as Joss Butler dollies one up to go for two. England getting a taste of their own medicine at 84-5.

  14. South Africa triumph in run chase

    Cricket

Captain AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis have both hit hundreds to set up a remarkable victory for South Africa over Australia.

Chasing Australia's 327-7 in their one-day international in Harare, South Africa romped home by seven wickets with more than three overs to spare.

The pair (below) put on 206 for the third wicket to give their side four points in the triangular tournament which has the world number-one ranking at stake.

Faf du Plessis congratulates A B de Villiers on a century against Australia
  15. Not for sale

    Football

    Roberto Soldado and Andros Townsend

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will not sell Andros Townsend or Roberto Soldado before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Soldado has struggled for form since joining from Valencia last summer and AC Milan have been linked with a move for the Spaniard.

"He is in my plans. For the future? Yes. Yes. We've only had two games in the Premier League and one in the Europa League," says Pochettino, who says he needs 24 or 25 players to manage this season.

  16. Button pushed out?

    Andrew Benson

    BBC Sport

"Jenson Button's Formula 1 career is hanging in the balance as McLaren continue their pursuit of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

"McLaren have been courting Alonso since last year after deciding they want him as a lead driver for their new engine partnership with Honda from 2015.

"They are not prepared to take any other decisions on drivers until they know whether Alonso will leave Maranello.

"Button is out of contract this year and wants to stay at McLaren."

  17. No Napoli move for Sandro and Lucas

    Football

Napoli have ended their interest in midfielders Lucas Leiva of Liverpool and Tottenham's Sandro, reports Talksport.

The transfer fees and wage demands have proven too problematic for Rafa Benitez's side, who will now turn their attention to David Lopez of Espanyol.

  18. England lose quick wickets as chase falters

    Cricket

Three quick wickets mean England are up against it in their run chase.

Alastair Cook and Alex Hales put on 54 for the first wicket but Cook and Ian Bell then go in the same Mohammed Shami over to leave England on 56-2 after 11.

India's 304-6 suddenly looks a long way off and it gets even worse for the hosts when Joe Root is castled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who makes the most of the bowler-friendly conditions, to make it 63-3.

A lot now on the shoulders of Hales and Eoin Morgan. Follow our live text commentary to see how it all pans out.

  19. No Bale-ing out

    Football

Manager Chris Coleman is adamant star man Gareth Bale will play if Wales have to play on an artificial surface when they meet Andorra on 9 September.

    Gareth Bale

The 3G pitch in question will be inspected by Fifa on Friday and while Coleman says he has met with Bale's Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti to discuss the problems the surface throws up, the 25-year-old will feature regardless.

"Madrid understand Gareth's got a job to play for Wales, if he's available he's going to play," says Coleman, who stressed his squad would not train on the surface beforehand for fear of picking up injuries. "Carlo said when they trained on 3G a lot of players had bad reactions, it was tough."

  20. McArthur fee agreed

    Football

    James McArthur

Leicester City agree a fee in the region of £7m for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McArthur.

The 26-year-old will become the Foxes sixth signing of the summer if he passes a medical later today.

Burnley were also interested in the services of the Scottish international but had a series of bids rejected.

  21. No bridge too far for Marquez

    Moto GP

World Moto GP champion Marc Marquez warmed up for Sunday's British Moto GP at Silverstone with a quick spin across the Millenium Bridge in London.

Not even the pigeons of St Paul's would have had a chance of catching the Spaniard who had won ten races in a row before his remarkable run was ended in the last round in the Czech Republic.

Marc Marquez rides across the Millenium Bridge in London
  22. Central role for Burgess

    Rugby Union

Sam Burgess will start his Bath career in the centres, but head coach Mike Ford still expects him to excel in the back-row.

South Sydney Rabbitohs star Burgess will trade codes for rugby union in October, joining Bath in a bid to break into Stuart Lancaster's Rugby World Cup 2015 squad.

Bath footed the entire bill for his signature and Ford says the international setup therefore have "no say" in his development.

"Clearly we'll probably look at him in the centres first and foremost, let him learn the game from afar really," says Ford. "But my gut feeling is he will end up in the pack."

Many of your tweets on Crystal Palace's appointment of Neil Warnock appeared to write the 65-year-old off but it appears the tide is turning.

Joe Cooper: Warnock's appointment is great! A huge influence in the dressing room, loves the fans and will show the grit to stay up.

Jack McLeod: Warnock has never had a chance to prove himself in the Premiership. I think he'll keep them up. What else can Crystal Palace hope for?

  24. Post update

Times chief football correspondent Oliver Kay tweets: If Crystal Palace stay up it will be the first time Warnock has kept a team in top flight (after Notts Co & Sheff U, though he was on course when QPR sacked him). And for what it's worth, I think Warnock will keep them up. They look far better equipped to survive than they did a year ago pre-Pulis.

  25. Celtic strike loan deal

    Football

    Mubarak Wakaso

Celtic complete the loan signing of Ghana winger Mubarak Wakaso.

The 24-year-old, who played in the World Cup, arrives on a one-year loan deal with Celtic having the option to buy the player from Russian side Rubin Kazan.

  26. Hands off Blind

    Football

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars says Manchester United have made no contact over Daley Blind and states only a "top price" would see the full-back move.

    Daley Blind

Reports have circulated linking the Netherlands defender with a move to Old Trafford, where he would link up with his former international coach Louis van Gaal.

"There's some rumblings around Daley, some clubs enquired, but there is no concrete offer," says former Arsenal winger Overmars. "Only if the absolute top price is paid is a transfer negotiable."

  27. Tough man to please

    Football

Miroslav Klose and Louis van Gaal

Miroslav Klose claims the years he spent playing under new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal were the hardest of his career.

The 36-year-old - Germany's all-time leading goalscorer with 71 goals - left Bayern Munich in 2011 after struggling to satisfy the Dutchman.

"I didn't feel free," says Klose. "It was very difficult for me to fulfil his expectations. He was asking me to make runs I just couldn't see. I gave it all I could, but sometimes it just wasn't enough."

  28. Rain in Cardiff delays England

    Cricket

England openers Alastair Cook and debutant Alex Hales get as far as the bottom of the pavilion steps at Cardiff before rain sends them scurrying back inside before they can start their reply.

India made 306-4 and won't want a wash-out as they will think they have a decent chance of going 1-0 up in what is now a four-match series.

  29. Israel Euro qualifier postponed

    Football

Israel's Euro 2016 qualifying tie at home to Belgium has been moved from 9 Sept to 31 March because of the security situation in Israel.

The country is not currently permitted to host any European matches at international or club level.

Maccabi Tel Aviv have been playing their home ties in the Champions League qualifying competition in Cyprus.

Wales are also in Israel's qualifying group, along with Bosnia-Hercegovina, Cyprus and Andorra in Group B.

  30. Soldado misses out for Spurs

    Football

    Roberto Soldado

Roberto Soldado will miss Tottenham's Europa League play-off second leg against AEL Limassol at White Hart Lane tomorrow night.

The Spanish striker, who scored one of the goals as Spurs won 2-1 in Cyprus, has neck and back injuries but defender Vlad Chiriches is available for the first time this season following injury.

Kyle Walker is still out with a hip problem as Spurs look to secure their place in the group stages.

  31. Swiss call up big two for Davis Cup

    Tennis

Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka have both been confirmed in Switzerland's team to face Italy in their Davis Cup semi-final in Geneva from 12-14 September.

The world numbers three and four (below) will be joined in the Swiss team by Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer, 167th and 454th respectively in the ATP rankings.

The winners will face either France or the Czech Republic in the final.

  32. South Africa make positive start

    Cricket

There could be a decent finish in prospect in Harare where South Africa are chasing Australia's 327-7 in their ODI.

South Africa reached 140-2 in the 23rd over with Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers both closing in on half-centuries.

Zimbabwe make up the triangular tournament.

  33. England set 305 to win in Cardiff

    Cricket

England's batting order looks as though it will be severely tested after India posted 304-6 in the second one-day international.

India recovered from 19-2 thanks largely to a sparkling century from Suresh Raina.

Opener Rohit Sharma and captain MS Dhoni also made half-centuries as England's seamers - and Chris Jordan in particular - found it tough going in what looked like decent bowling conditions.

  34. Bale in Wales squad for Euro qualifier

    Football

Chris Coleman has announced his squad for Wales' opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Andorra on 9 September.

There is a possibility the venue could be changed if Andorra don't get approval for their 3G pitch.

Wales will also face Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Israel and Cyprus in Group B.

Wales squad: Goalkeepers: Wayne Hennessey (Crystal Palace), Kyle Letheren (Dundee), Owain Fon Williams (Tranmere Rovers).

Defenders: James Chester (Hull City), James Collins (West Ham), Ben Davies (Tottenham), Chris Gunter (Reading), Adam Matthews (Celtic), Sam Ricketts (Wolves), Neil Taylor (Swansea City), Ashley Williams (Swansea City).

Midfielders: Joe Allen (Liverpool), Emyr Huws (Manchester City, on loan at Wigan Athletic), Andy King (Leicester City), Joe Ledley (Crystal Palace), Aaron Ramsey  (Arsenal), David Vaughan (Nottingham Forest).

Forwards: Gareth Bale (Real Madrid), Simon Church (Charlton Athletic), Tom Lawrence (Manchester United), Hal Robson-Kanu (Reading), George Williams (Fulham), Jonathan Williams (Crystal Palace).

  35. Century for Raina as India wrest control

    Cricket

India have remained on the attack with Suresh Raina lighting up a gloomy Cardiff with a dazzling century - his fourth in ODIs - before falling for exactly 100.

The left-hander (below) reached his 100 off just 74 balls with three sixes and 12 fours as India got to 267-4 in the 46th over.

England, who can't stop bowling wides, looked as though they might have been chasing over 300 but Raina's dismissal, caught in the deep by James Anderson off Chris Woakes, may apply the brakes.

  38. Dons played Man Utd at 'a good time'

    Football

    Will Grigg

Milton Keynes hero Will Grigg says they faced Manchester United at "a good time" in the Capital One Cup.

MK Dons humbled the Premier League side 4-0 with Grigg netting twice, but he believes no amount of negativity over United's current crop of players can overshadow the performance of the League One side.

"People have said it was a weakened Manchester United team. Obviously they had a few changes but they still had people returning from the World Cup and world-class players on the pitch," he tells BBC Radio 5 live. "Anyone watching the game and whoever was in the stadium noticed how well we played."

  39. Scottish League Cup draw

    Football

Holders Aberdeen are drawn at home to Livingston in the third round of the Scottish League Cup.

The draw has thrown up a derby as Dundee United host Dundee, while Celtic are at home to Hearts.

Draw in full: Dundee United v Dundee; Falkirk v Rangers or Inverness Caledonian Thistle; Ross County v Hibernian; Kilmarnock v St Johnstone; Aberdeen v Livingston; Partick Thistle v St Mirren; Celtic v Heart of Midlothian; Hamilton Academical v Motherwell.

Ties will be played on 23 and 24 September.

  40. Joshua fight announced

    Boxing

    Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua will face Konstantin Airich in Manchester on 13 September.

Airich, 35, is a Kazakh-born German heavyweight and has 21 wins from 35 fights, but faces a man with seven knockout wins from seven pro contests.

Joshua, who has recently sparred Wladimir Klitschko, will fight on the undercard of Scott Quigg's WBA world super bantamweight title defence against Stephane Jamoye.

  41. Pitch switch for Wales?

    Football

Wales' opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Andorra may have to be switched to a different country.

Chris Coleman's side are scheduled to play there on 9 September, but Andorra admit they have no alternative plans if their new 3G artificial pitch fails a Fifa inspection on Friday.

"We are strongly confident and not thinking about plan B," said Andorra's sporting co-ordinator Jordi Beal.

  42. Raina passes fifty as India cut loose

    Cricket

India are starting to motor with Suresh Raina taking 20 off a Chris Woakes over during the powerplay as the tourists move on to 191-4 after 38 overs.

After a dismal second half of the summer they could finally give England a serious test in what is effectively the first of four one-day internationals after the first was washed out.

Raina reached his 50 off 49 balls with a six and celebrated by hitting Woakes for another six and a four. Chris Jordan has now bowled 10 wides.

    Football

Tony Pulis, Ian Holloway, Dougie Freedman, Paul Hart and George Burley

Neil Warnock has signed a two-year deal to return as Crystal Palace manager, but since he left in 2010, five men have held the post permanently.

Paul Hart and George Burley managed fewer than 40 games between them, before Dougie Freedman took the helm. Freedman is the longest-serving manager in the period with 90 matches to his name.

Ian Holloway followed in his footsteps and won promotion to the Premier League before stepping aside for Tony Pulis to save the club from what looked like certain relegation. The Palace job, it seems, is not for the faint-hearted.

  45. 2013 Oaks winner Talent retired

    Horse Racing

Talent, winner of the 2013 Investec Oaks under Richard Hughes, has been retired after finishing fifth to Tapestry in last week's Yorkshire Oaks.

The Ralph Beckett-trained filly also finished second in last year's Ladbrokes St Leger.

    Talent wins the 2013 Oaks

"She gave us the best day of our training career when winning the Oaks last year," Beckett told his yard's website.

"But it became obvious that she is not the same filly this year and so it became clear that the best thing to do was to retire her."

  46. Warnock's return

    Football

So there it is then - as expected, Warnock returns to his former club where he won 47 of his 129 games in charge between 2007 and 2010.

The Eagles have had five other permanent managers since he left the club.

  51. No emergency striker for Arsenal

    Football

    Olivier Giroud

Arsenal are not planning to sign another striker to replace Olivier Giroud - even if scans on his ankle confirm a serious injury.

The club have no intention of recruiting any forwards on a permanent deal in this summer's transfer window, with a loan move the only possibility.

Giroud has undergone a second assessment after hurting himself in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday. The Gunners are expected to disclose the severity of his injury later today.

  52. Aussies set stiff test

    Cricket

South Africa will need a testing 328 off their 50 overs to beat Australia in their one-day international in Zimbabwe.

Whoever wins the triangular tournament (assuming the host nation doesn't) will occupy the world number one ranking for ODIs.

Hard-hitting opener Aaron Finch top-scored for the Aussies with 102 off 116 balls, with Mitchell Johnson blasting 23 off just eight balls at the end to take them well beyond 300.

  54. Palace to appoint Warnock

    Football

    Neil Warnock

Neil Warnock began his managerial career with Gainsborough Trinity in 1980 and - after spells at Sheffield United, Queens Park Rangers and Notts County to name a few - last managed at Leeds United in 2013.

A qualified referee, Warnock is no stranger to controversy and confrontation. He has become known for his outbursts with officials, but developed a reputation for guiding sides to promotion in England's lower leagues.

In all, he has won seven promotions, including two to the Premier League with Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers. He guided QPR into the top flight after leaving Crystal Palace to join them in 2010.

  55. Tredwell strikes to halt India fightback

    Cricket

England get a third wicket just when they need one as off-spinner James Treadwell removes Ajinkya Rahane for 41 to leave India on 110-3 after 24 overs.

The tourists had looked comfortable against seamers Chris Jordan and Ben Stokes, but Treadwell gets one past Rahane's outside edge and wicketkeeper Joss Buttler is given the stumping verdict after a review.

  56. Injured Klitschko re-schedules defence

    Boxing

World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has announced a new date for his IBF title bout with Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev after pulling out of the original fight through injury.

Klitschko, who also holds the WBO, WBA and IBO belts, will now face Pulez in Hamburg on 15 November.

The fight had been scheduled for 6 September but was put back after Klitschko, 38, tore bicep muscles in training.

  57. Gomis and Bony 'can play together'

    Football

Swansea manager Garry Monk insists summer acquisition Bafetimbi Gomis has been signed to play with and put pressure on Wilfried Bony - not replace him.

Gomis joined Swansea on a four-year contract from Lyon in June and has plenty of pedigree, having scored more than 140 goals in French football, prompting speculation Bony would move on after hitting 25 goals last season.

"When you get a formal offer is perhaps when you worry about it, but I'm prepared to use them both," says Monk. "If someone comes in with an offer, that's the only time you think about it."

  58. Warnock to be appointed Palace manager

    David Ornstein

    BBC Sport

"Crystal Palace are set to appoint Neil Warnock as their new manager.

"The 65-year-old, who was in charge of Palace between 2007 and 2010, has been preferred to former West Brom boss Steve Clarke.

  59. A difficult market

    Football

Burnley manager Sean Dyche says the Premier League club are being priced out of transfer deals as he looks to strengthen before Monday's deadline.

Asked if it was harder to sign players now than 12 months ago, he told BBC Radio Lancashire: "Weirdly, yes."

He added: "We are Premier League now and if you're going for any player, trust me, the value goes up radically from what it was a year ago or even a few months ago when we were in the Championship."

  60. Play by numbers

    Football

Everton signing Samuel Eto'o will wear the number five shirt at Goodison Park.

Surely it is written in law somewhere that five should only be worn by central defenders? It is certainly not a striker's choice, is it?

The Daily Mail takes a look at some of the more bizarre shirt choices. Why did David Beckham go for 23? What motivated Ronaldinho's choice of 80?

Clue: Beckham liked a certain basketball player and Ronaldinho is 34 years old.

    Steve Clarke and Neil Warnock

Steve Clarke and Neil Warnock appear to be the only men in the frame for the vacant managerial role at Crystal Palace, which is expected to be filled today.

Clarke, 50, was sacked by West Brom in December after a successful eighth-place finish in the previous campaign.

Warnock, who managed Palace between 2007 and 2010, has been out of work since parting company with Leeds in April 2013.

The 65-year-old has managed 13 clubs since 1980, taking charge in more than 1,300 matches.

However, the Cameroon international, who could make his Everton debut against Chelsea on Saturday, insists there is no bad blood between the pair.

"The only thing to say about Jose Mourinho is to thank him. It's down to Jose Mourinho that I had the opportunity to integrate into the Premier League," Eto'o says in his first news conference since joining Everton.

    Football

Manchester United's performance in their 4-0 defeat by Milton Keynes Dons "bordered on the disgraceful", according to BBC sport pundit Steve Claridge.

"I don't think we'll see too many of these players in a United shirt again if this is anything to go by," said Claridge when reacting to the defeat.

    Louis van Gaal

The former Leicester striker - a League Cup winner in 2000 - was also frustrated with Louis van Gaal's decision to sign autographs when the final whistle sounded.

"If that is the attitude he came into the game with, that is the performance he deserved," added Claridge. "If I was the manager I would be waiting to get at the players, not signing autographs."

"In every aspect he is the perfect fit for the team and squad. His mental focus was so impressive last season I knew for a fact that he was exactly what we needed for the squad," Martinez tells a news conference.

"I would have liked him to have 10 or 11 sessions before putting him in a competitive environment, but I quickly learned I was wasting my time.

"He wants to be helpful to the team and be involved."

"Many things and many lies were spoken. They always wanted to attribute the initiative to me to leave the club, but that was not the case. The only thing I asked for is something that would be fair."

The League One side ran in three second-half goals to secure their passage against a lacklustre United offering.

"You almost feel sorry for them. They are a club in transition," Winkelman tells BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast.

"The only interest of the board is cash," says Nicholas.

"That's why they spend £2m or £2.5m on budget players who don't have any experience for Champions League format. This club are miles away from two years ago; the quality they brought in is very poor indeed."
