Watford captain Troy Deeney has signed a new four-year deal at Vicarage Road to end any chance of a pre-deadline move.

The striker had attracted reported interest this summer from Hull, Leicester and Burnley but has now committed himself to the Championship club.

India complete a crushing 133-run win over England in Cardiff to take a 1-0 lead in the one-day series.

After rattling up 304-6, India then bowled out England for just 161 as they chased a revised target of 295.

It's on to Trent Bridge now for Saturday's next instalment of what is now a four-match series and England will have to bat a lot better.

Tottenham have nipped in quietly near the end of the day to confirm the signing of defender Federico Fazio from Sevilla.

The Argentina international, 27, has signed a four-year deal.

Real Madrid's former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has announced his retirement from international football.

Alonso bows out after Spain's dismal defence of their World Cup crown in Brazil.

However, the 32-year-old hangs up his boots with a World Cup and two European Championships (2008 and 2012) to his name.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish says Neil Warnock joins the club with "unfinished business" in the Premier League.

Warnock, 65, joins the club for the second time having left in 2010 but has never kept a side in the Premier League despite being in a position of safety before being sacked by QPR in January 2012.

Captain AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis have both hit hundreds to set up a remarkable victory for South Africa over Australia.

Chasing Australia's 327-7 in their one-day international in Harare, South Africa romped home by seven wickets with more than three overs to spare.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will not sell Andros Townsend or Roberto Soldado before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Soldado has struggled for form since joining from Valencia last summer and AC Milan have been linked with a move for the Spaniard.

"He is in my plans. For the future? Yes. Yes. We've only had two games in the Premier League and one in the Europa League," says Pochettino, who says he needs 24 or 25 players to manage this season.

"Jenson Button's Formula 1 career is hanging in the balance as McLaren continue their pursuit of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

"McLaren have been courting Alonso since last year after deciding they want him as a lead driver for their new engine partnership with Honda from 2015.

"They are not prepared to take any other decisions on drivers until they know whether Alonso will leave Maranello.

The 3G pitch in question will be inspected by Fifa on Friday and while Coleman says he has met with Bale's Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti to discuss the problems the surface throws up, the 25-year-old will feature regardless.

"Madrid understand Gareth's got a job to play for Wales, if he's available he's going to play," says Coleman, who stressed his squad would not train on the surface beforehand for fear of picking up injuries. "Carlo said when they trained on 3G a lot of players had bad reactions, it was tough."

Sam Burgess will start his Bath career in the centres, but head coach Mike Ford still expects him to excel in the back-row.

South Sydney Rabbitohs star Burgess will trade codes for rugby union in October, joining Bath in a bid to break into Stuart Lancaster's Rugby World Cup 2015 squad.

Bath footed the entire bill for his signature and Ford says the international setup therefore have "no say" in his development.

"Clearly we'll probably look at him in the centres first and foremost, let him learn the game from afar really," says Ford. "But my gut feeling is he will end up in the pack."

The 24-year-old, who played in the World Cup, arrives on a one-year loan deal with Celtic having the option to buy the player from Russian side Rubin Kazan.

Miroslav Klose claims the years he spent playing under new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal were the hardest of his career.

The 36-year-old - Germany's all-time leading goalscorer with 71 goals - left Bayern Munich in 2011 after struggling to satisfy the Dutchman.

"I didn't feel free," says Klose. "It was very difficult for me to fulfil his expectations. He was asking me to make runs I just couldn't see. I gave it all I could, but sometimes it just wasn't enough."

Roberto Soldado will miss Tottenham's Europa League play-off second leg against AEL Limassol at White Hart Lane tomorrow night.

The Spanish striker, who scored one of the goals as Spurs won 2-1 in Cyprus, has neck and back injuries but defender Vlad Chiriches is available for the first time this season following injury.

Kyle Walker is still out with a hip problem as Spurs look to secure their place in the group stages.

Manchester United will not qualify for next season's Champions League according to the majority of your votes.

More than 36,000 of you have been in touch and 60.66% of your votes say Louis van Gaal's side will finish between fifth and 10th spot in the Premier League table.

Just under a quarter of votes cast have United down to end the season between second and fourth, while an optimistic 4.32% of you say they will in the title.

Milton Keynes hero Will Grigg says they faced Manchester United at "a good time" in the Capital One Cup.

MK Dons humbled the Premier League side 4-0 with Grigg netting twice, but he believes no amount of negativity over United's current crop of players can overshadow the performance of the League One side.

"People have said it was a weakened Manchester United team. Obviously they had a few changes but they still had people returning from the World Cup and world-class players on the pitch," he tells BBC Radio 5 live. "Anyone watching the game and whoever was in the stadium noticed how well we played."

Holders Aberdeen are drawn at home to Livingston in the third round of the Scottish League Cup.

The draw has thrown up a derby as Dundee United host Dundee, while Celtic are at home to Hearts.

Anthony Joshua will face Konstantin Airich in Manchester on 13 September.

Airich, 35, is a Kazakh-born German heavyweight and has 21 wins from 35 fights, but faces a man with seven knockout wins from seven pro contests.

Joshua, who has recently sparred Wladimir Klitschko, will fight on the undercard of Scott Quigg's WBA world super bantamweight title defence against Stephane Jamoye.

Wales' opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Andorra may have to be switched to a different country.

Chris Coleman's side are scheduled to play there on 9 September, but Andorra admit they have no alternative plans if their new 3G artificial pitch fails a Fifa inspection on Friday.

"We are strongly confident and not thinking about plan B," said Andorra's sporting co-ordinator Jordi Beal.

India are starting to motor with Suresh Raina taking 20 off a Chris Woakes over during the powerplay as the tourists move on to 191-4 after 38 overs.

After a dismal second half of the summer they could finally give England a serious test in what is effectively the first of four one-day internationals after the first was washed out.

Raina reached his 50 off 49 balls with a six and celebrated by hitting Woakes for another six and a four. Chris Jordan has now bowled 10 wides.

Neil Warnock has signed a two-year deal to return as Crystal Palace manager, but since he left in 2010, five men have held the post permanently.

Paul Hart and George Burley managed fewer than 40 games between them, before Dougie Freedman took the helm. Freedman is the longest-serving manager in the period with 90 matches to his name.

Ian Holloway followed in his footsteps and won promotion to the Premier League before stepping aside for Tony Pulis to save the club from what looked like certain relegation. The Palace job, it seems, is not for the faint-hearted.

Talent, winner of the 2013 Investec Oaks under Richard Hughes, has been retired after finishing fifth to Tapestry in last week's Yorkshire Oaks.

The Ralph Beckett-trained filly also finished second in last year's Ladbrokes St Leger.

"She gave us the best day of our training career when winning the Oaks last year," Beckett told his yard's website.

"But it became obvious that she is not the same filly this year and so it became clear that the best thing to do was to retire her."

So there it is then - as expected, Warnock returns to his former club where he won 47 of his 129 games in charge between 2007 and 2010.

The Eagles have had five other permanent managers since he left the club.

Arsenal are not planning to sign another striker to replace Olivier Giroud - even if scans on his ankle confirm a serious injury.

The club have no intention of recruiting any forwards on a permanent deal in this summer's transfer window, with a loan move the only possibility.

Giroud has undergone a second assessment after hurting himself in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday. The Gunners are expected to disclose the severity of his injury later today.

South Africa will need a testing 328 off their 50 overs to beat Australia in their one-day international in Zimbabwe.

Whoever wins the triangular tournament (assuming the host nation doesn't) will occupy the world number one ranking for ODIs.

Neil Warnock began his managerial career with Gainsborough Trinity in 1980 and - after spells at Sheffield United, Queens Park Rangers and Notts County to name a few - last managed at Leeds United in 2013.

A qualified referee, Warnock is no stranger to controversy and confrontation. He has become known for his outbursts with officials, but developed a reputation for guiding sides to promotion in England's lower leagues.

In all, he has won seven promotions, including two to the Premier League with Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers. He guided QPR into the top flight after leaving Crystal Palace to join them in 2010.

England get a third wicket just when they need one as off-spinner James Treadwell removes Ajinkya Rahane for 41 to leave India on 110-3 after 24 overs.

The tourists had looked comfortable against seamers Chris Jordan and Ben Stokes, but Treadwell gets one past Rahane's outside edge and wicketkeeper Joss Buttler is given the stumping verdict after a review.

World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has announced a new date for his IBF title bout with Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev after pulling out of the original fight through injury.

Klitschko, who also holds the WBO, WBA and IBO belts, will now face Pulez in Hamburg on 15 November.

The fight had been scheduled for 6 September but was put back after Klitschko, 38, tore bicep muscles in training.

Swansea manager Garry Monk insists summer acquisition Bafetimbi Gomis has been signed to play with and put pressure on Wilfried Bony - not replace him.

Gomis joined Swansea on a four-year contract from Lyon in June and has plenty of pedigree, having scored more than 140 goals in French football, prompting speculation Bony would move on after hitting 25 goals last season.

"When you get a formal offer is perhaps when you worry about it, but I'm prepared to use them both," says Monk. "If someone comes in with an offer, that's the only time you think about it."

"Crystal Palace are set to appoint Neil Warnock as their new manager.

"The 65-year-old, who was in charge of Palace between 2007 and 2010, has been preferred to former West Brom boss Steve Clarke.

"It is understood Palace chairman and co-owner Steve Parish felt Warnock was the best option for what the club need now and building for the future.

"Warnock has money to spend and discussions will continue over the make-up of his backroom staff."

Burnley manager Sean Dyche says the Premier League club are being priced out of transfer deals as he looks to strengthen before Monday's deadline.

Asked if it was harder to sign players now than 12 months ago, he told BBC Radio Lancashire: "Weirdly, yes."

He added: "We are Premier League now and if you're going for any player, trust me, the value goes up radically from what it was a year ago or even a few months ago when we were in the Championship."

Fiji World Cup centre Wes Naiqama is London Broncos' latest and most high-profile signing for their Championship campaign in 2015.

Naiqama, 31, who made four appearances for the Bati in the 2013 World Cup, including the semi-final against Australia, is joining the relegated Broncos on a two-year deal from Penrith Panthers.

Australia are finding runs a little easier to come by than India are against England as they reach 249-4 after 42 overs of their one-day international with South Africa in Harare.

Steve Clarke and Neil Warnock appear to be the only men in the frame for the vacant managerial role at Crystal Palace, which is expected to be filled today.

Samuel Eto's departure from Chelsea at the end of last season continued an interesting exchange of words with manager Jose Mourinho, who at one stage appeared to question the striker's age.

However, the Cameroon international, who could make his Everton debut against Chelsea on Saturday, insists there is no bad blood between the pair.

"The only thing to say about Jose Mourinho is to thank him. It's down to Jose Mourinho that I had the opportunity to integrate into the Premier League," Eto'o says in his first news conference since joining Everton.

Manchester United's performance in their 4-0 defeat by Milton Keynes Dons "bordered on the disgraceful", according to BBC sport pundit Steve Claridge.

"I don't think we'll see too many of these players in a United shirt again if this is anything to go by," said Claridge when reacting to the defeat.

The former Leicester striker - a League Cup winner in 2000 - was also frustrated with Louis van Gaal's decision to sign autographs when the final whistle sounded.

"If that is the attitude he came into the game with, that is the performance he deserved," added Claridge. "If I was the manager I would be waiting to get at the players, not signing autographs."

West Ham have allowed striker Modibo Maiga to join French club Metz on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez says the experience and know-how of Samuel Eto'o will be a massive help to his team this season and admits he could include the striker against Chelsea on Saturday if he appears match-fit over the next couple of days.

"In every aspect he is the perfect fit for the team and squad. His mental focus was so impressive last season I knew for a fact that he was exactly what we needed for the squad," Martinez tells a news conference.

"I would have liked him to have 10 or 11 sessions before putting him in a competitive environment, but I quickly learned I was wasting my time.

"He wants to be helpful to the team and be involved."

AC Milan will attempt to sign striker Fernando Torres, according to president Adriano Galliani.

The Rossoneri hope to land Torres, 30, on a season-long loan and also want to sign his Chelsea team-mate Marco van Ginkel, 21.

"We are in the last stages of the market and we will see if we are able to acquire an important forward," says Galliani. "Torres is certainly an important forward and we will see if we can sign him or another player.

The Argentina international, who yesterday joined United for £59.7m on a five-year deal, said in an open letter published in Spanish newspaper Marca: "After winning La Decima (Real's 10th European Cup), I went to the World Cup with the hope of receiving a new contract, which never came.

Milton Keynes Dons chairman Pete Winkelman says he almost "felt sorry" for Manchester United as his side romped to a 4-0 League Cup second round win at Stadium MK.

The League One side ran in three second-half goals to secure their passage against a lacklustre United offering.

"You almost feel sorry for them. They are a club in transition," Winkelman tells BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast.

"I think it's a game they can just forget. They can get on with their own season. For us, it's something we will never forget. It's in the annals of our history. Today I am still pinching myself."

The Champions League draw for the group stages takes place in Monaco late tomorrow afternoon and those who have booked a place include FC Porto and Zenit St Petersburg thanks to their wins last night.

It's Arsenal's turn to step up tonight as they look to finish off the job against Besiktas after drawing 0-0 in their first leg in Turkey.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao against Napoli looks the pick of the ties with the La Liga club holding the advantage of an away goal from their 1-1 draw in Italy.

Former Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas says the club have regressed in recent seasons in the wake of their Champions League exit at the hands of NK Maribor.

The Scottish champions lost 1-0 at Celtic Park, 2-1 on aggregate.

"The only interest of the board is cash," says Nicholas.

"That's why they spend £2m or £2.5m on budget players who don't have any experience for Champions League format. This club are miles away from two years ago; the quality they brought in is very poor indeed."

American teenager CiCi Bellis beat Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova 6-1 4-6 6-4.

"I went into the match thinking it was going to be such a great experience, but I never thought I would come out on top winning," said Bellis, the youngest player to feature in a Grand Slam main draw for more than nine years.

Burnley were another Premier League side to face the humiliation of an early League Cup exit.

The newly promoted outfit lost out to a late Atdhe Nuhiu penalty as Sheffield Wednesday left Turf Moor with a third round spot.

"It was a nearly performance," said Burnley boss Sean Dyche. "If you score the first goal it changes that nearly performance into a very good one."

Away from the gossip and Everton have completed the signing of former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o.

The 33-year-old, who has played 118 times for Cameroon, moves to Goodison on a free transfer and signs a two-year deal.

"I have been very impressed by the style of play Everton adopt," said Eto'o. "I could see straight away that at this club I will have the opportunity to play football."

Newly promoted Leicester City lost 1-0 to Shrewsbury Town at home - a result which Foxes boss Nigel Pearson feels underlined the need to strengthen his squad.

Elsewhere, West Ham were held to a 1-1 draw by Sheffield United at Upton Park with the League One side reaching round three on penalties.

Manchester United's heartache was probably only shared in equal measure by supporters of Celtic on Tuesday night as the Scottish champions crashed out of the Champions League.

Celtic were beaten 1-0 at home and 2-1 on aggregate by Slovenia's NK Maribor, prompting manager Ronny Deila to say his side were "just not good enough".

"We did not lose because of the defending - we lost because we did not create anything," said Deila.

Celtic will now compete in this season's Europa League.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown on BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast: "I've watched the game and it was a Manchester United team which was almost toothless, without any real passion. I know there were young players but you didn't see any of the DNA you saw in the past. I think last night was a real wake up for Louis van Gaal.

"It was almost like watching a youth team play. There's a long way back from that now, a lot of work to do at Manchester United."

Within hours of breaking the British transfer record with the £59.7m capture of Angel Di Maria, Manchester United were humiliated at Stadium MK by Karl Robinson's Milton Keynes Dons.

United manager Louis van Gaal described Di Maria as "an excellent addition to the team" and it seems more will be needed as a United side boasting Jonny Evans, Javier Hernandez and Anderson were well short against League One opposition.

"I am not shocked. Because I know what can happen," said the Dutch manager after his side's defeat. "A new team is not built in one month."
