"Thank you so much," said Julianne Moore, as the hotly-tipped actress took home the best actress Oscar after racking up prizes for her role in Still Alice throughout the film season.
"I read somewhere that winning an Oscar can lead to you living five years longer - if that's true, I'd like to thank the Academy as my husband is younger than me!"
The actress, who has been nominated four times previously, paid tribute to her fellow nominees, saying there was "no such thing as best actress".
"I'm just grateful to be able to stand up here and thank the people I love," she said.
"I'm thrilled we were able to shine a light on Alzheimer's disease. So many people with this disease feel isolated and marginalised and one of the wonderful things about movies is things are able to be seen. Hopefully this movie will be seen and it will help find a cure."

Both Birdman and Grand Budapest went into tonight's Oscars with nine nominations.
Birdman just got its first win of the night, while Budapest Hotel now has three - a third of those it is up for.
Meryl Streep gave a moving introduction to the montage of movie industry greats we lost in the past year.
Among others, Mickey Rooney, James Garner, Maya Angelou, Richard Attenborough, Robin Williams, Lauren Bacall and Bob Hoskins were all mentioned.

It's the second consecutive Oscar for Emmanuel Lubezki, who won the same award for Gravity last year.

I just spoke to Matt Kirkby and James Lucas about their win for live action short The Phone Call.
Matt had to sell his car and wait for Woody Allen to finish Blue Jasmine before he could have Sally Hawkins to star in the film. He told me he hopes winning this Oscar will be the spring board into making feature films.
He said everyone on The Phone Call had worked for free and now he hoped he could get production companies involved so people could get paid.
"We're both in Hollywood now with feature scripts under our arms," he said.
He also gave some advice to short film makers: "Be tenacious, be patient, keep going."

Mat Kirkby and James Lucas, the British film-makers behind short film The Phone Call, were delighted by their film's victory.
"Short films are made with tenacity and lots of favours," said Kirkby. He thanked actress Sally Hawkins - who starred in the film - for donating "her incredible talent and asking for nothing. This is for you."
The film sees Hawkins play a helpline call centre volunteer who counsels a mystery man.

Calling card
Whiplash star JK Simmons picked up the first Oscar of the night.
He paid tribute to his wife as "the most remarkable person I know" and his "above-average children" whom he called "extraordinary human beings". "And that's because you are a reflection of your mother," he joked.
"Call your mum, call your dad," he urged. "Don't text, don't email. Call them. Tell them you love them and listen to them for as long as they want to talk."

"Maybe next year there'll be some immigration rules to the Academy - two Mexicans in a row is suspicious," director Alejandro G Inarritu joked when he collected the best picture prize, referencing Alfonso Cuaron's best director win last year.
Michael Keaton paid tribute to Inarritu saying: "This has been a tremendous experience - this guy is as bold as bold can be. It's just great fun to be here."

"Thank you so much," said Julianne Moore, as the hotly-tipped actress took home the best actress Oscar after racking up prizes for her role in Still Alice throughout the film season.
"I read somewhere that winning an Oscar can lead to you living five years longer - if that's true, I'd like to thank the Academy as my husband is younger than me!"
The actress, who has been nominated four times previously, paid tribute to her fellow nominees, saying there was "no such thing as best actress".
"I'm just grateful to be able to stand up here and thank the people I love," she said.
"I'm thrilled we were able to shine a light on Alzheimer's disease. So many people with this disease feel isolated and marginalised and one of the wonderful things about movies is things are able to be seen. Hopefully this movie will be seen and it will help find a cure."

Backstage, best supporting actress winner Patricia Arquette expanded on what she said about equality in her speech and called for changes in the law.
"It is time for women. Equal means equal."
And referring to the obsession with Oscar fashion, she said her dress had been made by her childhood friend - who had been the first person who had ever asked her what she wanted to be when he grew up.

British sound mixer Ben Wilkins from Whiplash has been a big part of my Oscar diary since he was nominated. Two weeks ago he won a Bafta, now he has an Oscar.

I just spoke to Matt Kirkby and James Lucas about their win for live action short The Phone Call.
Matt had to sell his car and wait for Woody Allen to finish Blue Jasmine before he could have Sally Hawkins to star in the film. He told me he hopes winning this Oscar will be the spring board into making feature films.
He said everyone on The Phone Call had worked for free and now he hoped he could get production companies involved so people could get paid.
"We're both in Hollywood now with feature scripts under our arms," he said.
He also gave some advice to short film makers: "Be tenacious, be patient, keep going."

Mat Kirkby and James Lucas, the British film-makers behind short film The Phone Call, were delighted by their film's victory.
"Short films are made with tenacity and lots of favours," said Kirkby. He thanked actress Sally Hawkins - who starred in the film - for donating "her incredible talent and asking for nothing. This is for you."
The film sees Hawkins play a helpline call centre volunteer who counsels a mystery man.
Kirkby paid tribute to "volunteers in crisis centres who give their time for nothing - including our mums".
