Wild Virginia ponies make waves in annual 'pony swim'

Spectators from around the world have gathered on Chincoteague Island in the US state of Virginia to watch the annual "pony swim".

The event - when wild ponies living on Assateague Island are rounded up and driven across Chincoteague Bay - has taken place since 1925 and is aimed at keeping the number of ponies on the island at a sustainable level as well as raising money from the auction of foals.

There were cheers from the crowd as the first ponies reached the shore and the animals were led down the Main Street.
