Dave Grohl On A Roll: 6 lessons from his formative years

Dave Grohl sits down with Matt Everitt to look back over a life spanning Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. Get 6 life lessons from the nicest man in rock:

1) Listen to your mum

Dave Grohl's first harmonies

"My mother sang so I would sing with her in the car and she taught me how to harmonise."

2) Hang out with your cousins

“My cousin took me to see this punk rock band called Naked Ray Gun… I went home and decided that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life. It totally changed my life.”

3) Check out your local scene

“I had no idea that there was this huge influential punk rock scene in Washington DC. Bands like Minor Threat, The Bad Brains and Scream, all these bands that were amazing that were right in my back yard and I had no clue!”

4) Get your musical foundations right

"Make sure you get a Zeppelin record first"

Dave Grohl on why Led Zeppelin should be part of everyone's musical foundation.

5) You're never too cool for music you love

“As a punk rocker it wasn’t really cool to listen to Neil Young so I would wait until my sister would go to sleep or go to school.”

6) Beg, borrow (don’t steal)

“Even before I was in Nirvana I had a friend who had an 8 track studio in his basement. I’d always say ‘Hey do you have any tape left?’ I would record something by myself where I’d play the drums first and then I’d over dub guitars, bass and a vocal... I was imposing, asking for free tape.”
