BE A "RECORD BAKER" WITH BBC RADIO GLOUCESTERSHIRE!

Children in Need

For this year's BBC Children In Need appeal, BBC Radio Gloucestershire is hoping to break a Guinness World Record for the longest line of cakes, but we need your help to it. If you would like to be involved in the record attempt, please read on.

THE WORLD RECORD

At the moment the World Record for the Longest Line of Cakes stands at 607 metres and is held by a town in Columbia. To beat the record, we're aiming for more than 14,500 cupcakes. It's quite a challenge, but WE CAN DO IT.

THE RULES FOR THE ATTEMPT ARE PRETTY STRICT

  1. We need the cupcakes to be the same
  2. - The cakes must contain traditional ingredients in the correct proportions (so please stick to the official recipe!)
  3. The cupcakes must be in a continuous line (but it doesn't have to be straight)
  4. There can't be any gaps between the cupcakes

GETTING YOUR CAKES TO US

There are a number of options for getting your World Record Breaking cupcakes to us:

On Thursday, 13 November you can drop them off at one of our EIGHT Collection Points around Gloucestershire (listed below - please check the opening times for each Collection Point)

On Friday, 14 November from 0800-1300 you can bring your cakes to Gloucestershire Airport, GL51 6SR.

Click here for the Google Map directions.

When you drop your cakes off please make a donation to Children In Need. We’re trying to make as much money as possible for this great charity.

THE "OFFICAL" CUPCAKE RECIPE

We need the cupcakes to be the same - so please stick to the recipe! (although you can do your own decoration!)

(This makes a batch of 12 cupcakes, but we'd love you to make as many batches as you can, as we need A LOT of cupcakes).

INGREDIENTS

For the cupcakes

110g/4oz butter or margarine, softened at room temperature

110g/4oz caster sugar

2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten

1 tsp vanilla extract

110g/4oz self-raising flour

1-2 tbsp milk

For the icing (you can decorate the cupcakes in your own style, but here’s a simple idea!)

110g/4oz icing sugar

2 dessert spoons of warm water

6 glacé cherries (halved)

SIZE

Please use a muffin tray with base of cupcakes approx. 5cm

PREPARATION METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale. Beat in the eggs a little at a time and stir in the vanilla extract. Fold in the flour using a large metal spoon, adding a little milk until the mixture is of a dropping consistency. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until they're half full. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until golden-brown on top, and a skewer inserted into one of the cakes comes out clean. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack.

Making the icing

Mix the icing sugar and 2 dessert spoons of warm water together. If the mix won’t absorb all of the icing sugar, add more warm water gradually. The icing mix needs to be stiff and not run off the cakes. If it’s too runny then add more icing sugar gradually. When the cakes have cooled spoon 1 teaspoon of icing on to each cake and smooth with the back of the spoon. Put ½ a cherry on top of each cake.

Stay safe

Please follow this Food Safety Advice when making your cupcakes

Wash your hands before preparing food

Make sure the surfaces, bowls, utensils and equipment are clean

Please keep your cakes in a cool, dry place. When you deliver your cakes to a collection point it’s really important that you bring your cakes in a sealed box. It could be an old ice cream tub, or a box sealed with cling film. Please remember WE CANNOT RETURN ANY BOXES
