Wales: Scott Williams admits 'frustration' at lack of game time

Wales centre Scott Williams admits it was frustrating not to break into the starting line-up during the Six Nations.

Williams, 25, came off the bench for Warren Gatland's side to score tires in the wins against Ireland and Italy.

Despite the disappointment Williams says he is not giving up.

"It's a little bit frustrating, but there's nothing much I can do just concentrate on my own performances and train hard," he said.

Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies were the first choice midfield pairing for Wales, who ended the tournament with four wins in row following defeat in their opening match against England.

They beat Italy by a record 61-20 margin Rome, but finished behind winners Ireland and second-placed England on points difference.

Wales are up against England, Australia, Fiji and Uruguay in their 2015 World Cup pool this autumn and Williams believes competition for places, such as his own personal battle, is good for the squad.

"It's only a good thing for Wales that we have a lot of strength in depth," he said, "so that's going to give us a good chance in the world cup, not just in my position, but in every position.

"The players that are playing [at centre] are world class players so you can't really complain you just have to try and concentrate on what your own job is and when you get the opportunity you've got to try and make the most of it.

"Selection is not in my hands really, all I can do is play as well as I can and train as hard as I can and when I get my opportunity I'm going to take it."

Williams, who recently signed a Welsh Rugby Union dual contract, hopes to start for Scarlets on Saturday as they host Edinburgh in the Pro12.

The top six in the league will qualify for the European Champions Cup next season and Williams says the Welsh region, currently seventh in the table, need to win all five of their remaining matches.

"I think it's a realistic target," he said.

"Every game's hard but it's got to be one of goals to win every game because this is our bread and butter.

"We all want to be playing in Europe next year. That's enough motivation for us."
