Vardy's England call-up had him in tears says former team-mate

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy cried when he learned of his England call-up, his former team-mate Andy Mangan has revealed.

Vardy, who has spent much of his career in non-league, was named by Roy Hodgson in the England squad for the games against Republic of Ireland and Slovenia in June.

"There were tears. It's such an emotional time. He's had such an up and down career and now to be involved in the England squad is amazing," he said.

"When he joined Fleetwood I said to my wife, 'God we've signed this lad from Halifax' and my wife went 'Well he might be good' and I said 'He's not going to be good, he comes from Halifax', and obviously I've ate my words massively.”

Asked what it will mean to Vardy, Mangan said: "It will mean a massive amount to himself and his family...he'll take it in his stride and it will give Roy Hodgson a chance to look at him up close".
