Spinning a yarn in Cheshire

Halton Village Millennium Green will be getting a very colourful makeover in July when it gets yarnbombed - covering trees, benches and anything that doesn't move in community made crochet.

The idea was suggested by Anne Brennan, the Chair of the trust that looks after the space. As the hard work is already underway, she told Get Creative about the project.

"I am from a creative background, I teach and manage in the visual arts. We all bring our own strengths to the Millennium Green, as Chair I have tried to promote the arts as a way to engage the community and this is how I came to suggest the idea of a yarnbomb.

It's been fantastic to see the older generation sharing their skills with the children

The response to the suggestion was the best we had ever had so then we had to make it happen.

We promoted it through social media and asked for donations from local businesses. We received lots of yarn and needles to use in our workshops.

We had never done anything like this before, we didn't know what to expect, we got a great response and it's gone from there.

We have the local WI involved, it's been fantastic to see the older generation sharing their skills with the children. The Brownies are involved as well as the local Primary school - they have all been crocheting or knitting squares, or even randomly shaped pieces for our Yarnbomb.

In addition to this sharing of skills, we have also received many pieces from experienced makers, flowers, butterflies, bunting. It's been great.

The last day for collecting Yarnbomb contributions is 2 May. On 16 May there will be a workshop to join the pieces to install on our trees, sculptures and benches.

The yarnbomb will happen on 4 July and will stay up until mid September."
