A fire in which a woman died and two others were injured in West Sussex is thought to have been caused by smoking materials, the fire service said.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue was called to the "ferocious fire" in the terraced house in Harwood Road, Littlehampton, at 12:10 BST on Saturday.

A woman, who has not yet been named, was declared dead at the scene, a fire service spokesman said.

The fire is thought to have started accidentally, he said.

Two others were taken to hospital for treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Mark Hayter from the fire service said: "Nationally, smoking is still the biggest cause of death in accidental house fires. We are urging smokers to please stub cigarettes out properly and remember to dispose of hot ashes carefully."
