  2. Luton survey: Improvements can be made

    Earlier we reported on a survey conducted by Luton Borough Council about people's perceptions of the town. The leader of the Conservative group on they council has said they must learn from the results.

    Of the 957 people who completed it, almost half had what was termed a 'negative or strongly negative' view.

    Mike Garrett told us improvements can be made: "There are ways of saving money that could change Luton and change it quite considerably."

  3. Cloudy weather outlook

    Mainly dry through this evening with further sunny spells, just the small risk of an isolated shower. Staying mostly dry overnight, but areas of high-level cloud will bring the risk of one or two isolated but locally sharp showers. A warm night, with temperatures only falling to 12C (54F).

    Friday will be very warm and humid, some hazy sunshine in the morning, but areas of cloud willbring the risk of a few scattered showers, which may be locally heavy with the odd rumble of thunder.

    In a freshening southwesterly breeze, temperatures will reach up to 23C (73F) in the best of any sunshine.

  4. 117-year-old Chesham church set to close

    A church that has served a town for more than 100 years is set to close its doors for good at the weekend.

    The Salvation Army, in Broad Street, Chesham, will close after its final service on Sunday due to a lack of funds.

  5. Beds Police chief constable job advertised

    The job advert for the role of chief constable of Bedfordshire Police has been posted online.

    Whoever is successful in the role, which pays up to £150,000 along with a relocation package and company car allowance, needs to be frugal too.

    The advert says the chief constable will need "significant experience of managing finite resources" - something the outgoing chief Colette Paul knows only too well.

  6. Delays across Bedfordshire

    All lanes have now re-opened on the M1 northbound due to an earlier accident J10-J11. Congestion to J7.

    There is slow traffic on the A1 northbound due to a two car collision earlier which closed one lane near J10 and the Biggleswade South junction.

    The A5120 is queuing in both directions in Harlington between M1 J12 and Toddington Road due to an accident.

  7. Myeloma: Bucks woman's journey

    Deb Gascoyne from High Wycombe suffers from Myeloma, more commonly known as bone marrow cancer. It is a treatable cancer, but it does return and the symptoms change as time passes.

    After being diagnosed, Deb decided to write down her thoughts and feelings in an online blog as she started to undergo treatment. She also got very involved in fundraising, so much so that she has now made a career out of it.

    "[Myeloma]'s not who I am - I hope I'm much bigger than that," Deb told Nick Coffer earlier on BBC Three Counties Radio.

  9. Robin: Robot Infant and diabetes

    At the University of Hertfordshire today, students and professors have been showcasing their inventions and projects for the Innovation Showcase.

    This is Robin - short for Robot Infant. He is an autonomous toddler who behaves just like a child but he is also programmed to show symptoms of diabetes.

    Developers Dr Lola Canamero and Dr Matthew Lewis have created Robin with the goal that he will be used to teach children recently diagnosed with diabetes to manage their condition rather than their parents.

  10. Giraffes: Have they suffered 'evolutionary karma'?

    Earlier we mention that scientists are studying giraffes at Whipsnade Zoo to find out if being the world's tallest mammal is a good thing.

    Chris Basu from the Royal Veterinary College tells us: "We know it gives them an advantage when it comes to feeding, but what we don't know is if there is some kind of evolutionary karma attached to that - we don't know if having long legs and a long neck is a help or a hindrance when it comes to walking.

    "From a veterinary point of view this kind of information is really helpful when it comes to treating lameness."

  11. Congestion on M1 and A1

    Two lanes remain closed with long delays on the M1 northbound at J10, with tailbacks to J7.

    On the A1 northbound there is one lane closed between the A1M J10 and Biggleswade South due to a two car collision. Recovery is on the scene.

  12. New Luton Fire Cadets launched

    Staying with fire service recruits and a new branch of Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service's fire cadets has been launched Luton.

    The mixed group of 14 teenagers showed off their new skills in front of the Chief Fire Officer Paul Fuller on Tuesday who said: "Becoming a fire cadet [provides] an exciting and unique insight into what modern firefighting is all about.

    "It is also an opportunity to develop both personal and social skills by promoting self-discipline, team work and citizenship."

    Seven people arrested on suspicion of immigration offences near Toddington services in Bedfordshire yesterday have been handed over to immigration officials.

    Five men from Sudan and two from Eritrea, a country on the Horn of Africa, were detained.

    In a separate incident, a lorry driver alerted police to sounds in the back of his vehicle at Kimpton Road in Luton. Two boys from Eritrea, aged 14 and 16, were detained and are now in the care of the local authority.

    Police are advising motorists to avoid the M1 northbound which has only one lane open due to a serious collision between two lorries at J10-J11.

    Traffic is queuing until J7 for Hemel. The air ambulance has already attended the scene.

  18. GM wheat trial in Hertfordshire

    The results of a field trial of genetically modified wheat in Hertfordshire is published today.

    Backed by the Government and developed at the Rothamsted Research centre, the wheat emits a scent that repels aphids.

  19. House damaged in Luton shooting

    A house has been damaged after a shooting in a residential street in Luton on Tuesday.

    The incident happened at about 16:00 in Douglas Road. No-one was injured in the attack, police say.

    They want to speak to two black men who were seen in the area at the time, both described as being of slim build. One was wearing a dark-coloured coat, the other wore dark clothing and a bright blue peaked cap.

    The M1 is blocked northbound between J10-J11 because of an accident involving two lorries.

    Traffic is stationary until J7 for Hemel Hempstead. Expect long delays.

  22. HS2: Historic woodland impacted

    Staying with rail transport and Mantles Wood near Amersham will count as more historic woodland impacted by HS2 high speed rail network, according to the MP for Chesham and Amersham, Cherly Gillan.

    She says the process has not been transparent and fair, and still does not accept the need for a tunnel under the whole of the area of outstanding natural beauty impact by the line.

    The government says any changes have come as a result of the consultation process. There will be a further visit to Buckinghamshire by the HS2 select committee tomorrow.

  23. Network Rail upgrade delayed by government

    Network Rail's £38.5bn modernisation plan is being delayed by the government because of rising cost and missed targets.

    The electrification of the Midland Mainline through Luton and Bedford, and the Trans Pennine Route, are being "paused."

    "All of these problems could and should have been foreseen by Network Rail", Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said. He told MPs electrification has been difficult, the supply chain for signalling works needs to be stronger and construction rates are too slow.

  24. Problems on M1 and A421

    One lane is closed and matrix signs are set to 40mph on the M1 northbound between J10 and J11 because of an incident.

    There is slow traffic on the A421 westbound in Milton Keynes from Bedford to the Kingston Roundabout.

  27. Luton council's priority to invest in jobs

    Luton Borough Council have said, in light of a survey about people's perceptions of Luton, their main priority now is to invest in jobs and businesses in the town.

    The council plans to deliver 15,000 new jobs and almost 6,000 new homes.

    "This survey confirms we are on the right track, that people want good jobs, homes, schools and a well maintained environment," the council said.

  29. Lay-by death: Man arrested on suspicion of murder

    A second man has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found in a lay-by on the A413 In Gerrards Cross on Tuesday.

    Thames Valley Police arrested the 34-year-old man from Southall, in west London, last night on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody.

    On Tuesday, police arrested a 50-year-old man who has since been released without charge.

  30. A422 closed in Bucks

    The A422 in Buckinghamshire is closed in both directions between the High Street and School Lane junctions because of an accident involving a car and a motorcycle.

    There is congestion to Stowe Avenue.

  31. Bedford: International Year of Light

  32. Motorbike collision in Hertfordshire

    Hertfordshire Police are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist suffered multiple injuries in a head-on collision with a car near Stevenage yesterday.

    It happened just before 18:00 on the B656 Codicote Road close to Langley village. The road was closed for several hours.

    The motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was airlifted to Addenbrookes Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition. The driver of the Volkswagen Golf, a woman in her 60s, was taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage with minor injuries.

    A new website packed with advice and information for children currently in care, and care leavers, is now online.

    Central Bedfordshire's Children in Care Council (CiCC) launched the site not only as a source of information, but also to allow young people in care to communicate with other looked-after children.

    The saga of a proposed £600m aquarium in Bedfordshire which had £4m of public money invested in it, now sold by Moorfields Corporate Rocovery Ltd for an undisclosed sum, has been rumbling on for eight years.

    The National Institute for Research into Aquatic Habitats (NIRAH) was given the go-ahead to build the aquarium in Stewartby in 2007. It was due to have been built by 2012, but a lack of investment and delays led to nothing being built on the former brickworks and planning permission expired last September.

    The aquarium, which was originally expected to cost £375m, was mooted as a scientific research centre and visitor attraction four times the size of the Eden Project in Cornwall.

  35. Luton Perceptions survey: 'Challenging opinions'

    The results of a council survey outlining people's perceptions of Luton have shown 43% of the 957 respondents had either a "fairly negative" or "very negative" view of the town - but more than four in ten mentioned good public services, amenities and public transport links.

    A Luton Borough Council spokesman told us "some challenging opinions" had been "expected" but it was a "valuable initial piece of work".

    He added: "The whole point has been to get opinions out into the open, acknowledged and begin work to go about addressing them."

    There are delays of 40 minutes on the M1 northbound due to a multi-vehicle accident just before J14. One lane is closed and there's congestion to J12 for Flitwick.

    Traffic on the A5 is looking heavy northbound between the Dunstable junction and the Woburn Road junction in Hockliffe.

    Around Watford and St Albans, there seems to be congestion on various roads. Check here to see if your journey's affected.

  41. Proposed aquatic habitats site sold-off

    A former Bedfordshire quarry, which had seen nearly £4m of taxpayers money invested into plans to turn the site into a £600m aquarium, has been sold by Moorfields Corporate Recovery Ltd.

    Planning permission for the National Institute for Research into Aquatic Habitats (NIRAH) project at the 140-acre Quest Pit site near Stewartby expired last September when the scheme failed to raise the necessary funding after eight years.

    Administrators say the return to the taxpayer is minimal and the government says it is disappointed NIRAH did not become a reality.

    A woman found dead in a lay-by in Buckinghamshire on Tuesday has been named as Anita Kapoor, from Hayes in west London.

    The body of the 34-year-old was found by a motorist in Amersham Road on the A413 at Gerrards Cross. A post-mortem examination found the cause of death to be "asphyxiation, due to compression of the neck".

    Luton Borough Council have released the results of a survey outlining people's perceptions of Luton, commissioned so they could create an accurate picture of what the town is about.

    Of the 957 people who completed it, 43% had what was termed a "negative or strongly negative" view, citing words such as "overcrowded and dangerous" to describe the town. But 40% were very or fairly positive.

    Good public services, local amenities and public transport links were mentioned as positives and at least one in five also mentioned good job opportunities, affordable decent housing and accessible motorways.
