They are dragging this out. Now the awards for the best three players of the tournament.

Japan's Aya Miyama gets the bronze ball for being third best, Amandine Henry of France, who is not in Vancouver, is the second best player.

And, drum roll..... the best player of the tournament is USA's hat-trick hero Carli Lloyd. She has just picked up a silver boot and a golden ball in the last two minutes. She will soon have a gold medal as well.

The officials have collected their medals. Carli Lloyd goes up on her own to receive the silver boot for coming second to Germany's Celia Sasic in the goalscoring charts.

USA goalkeeper Hope Solo then gets a golden glove for being the best goalkeeper in the tournament.

USA become the first side to win the Women's World Cup three times.

Carli Lloyd scored the quickest goal in a final, before she netted twice more to complete her hat-trick in 16 minutes. Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath were also on the scoresheet as USA followed up their successes in 1991 and 1999.

Jacqui Oatley guessed at 80 minutes for the introduction of legendary USA striker Abby Wambach, a former Women's World Player of the Year.

But Jacqui is a minute out as Wambach comes on, to an ear-splitting shriek from the USA fans, in the 79th minute. 

She is set to retire from international football after this tournament. Will we see the Hollywood ending of a World Cup final goal? She has 11 minutes to do so.

Yuki Ogimi should do better but heads straight at Hope Solo from only six yards out. That may have just been a way back for the 2011 winners, who will be losing their grip on the trophy in 15 minutes time, unless we see something sensational.

That ball definitely went over the line, the deflection completely wrong-footed Hope Solo. Julie Johnston has been excellent throughout this tournament, but it was just one of those things that happen when you are trying to clear the ball.

USA are pushing for another goal. Morgan Brian is the next to look to get on the scoresheet, but is denied by a save from Ayumi Kaihori.

Japan's coach Norio Sasaki's half-time talk probably went along the lines of 'STOP CARLI LLOYD'.

If so, the players haven't really listened as Lloyd is allowed to sprint down the left wing and her cross eventually finds defender Ali Krieger, whose shot on goal is blocked by a desperate Japan defender.

The BBC pundits are pointing the finger at Japanese defender Azusa Iwashimizu, saying she was at fault for three of the four goals USA scored.

Remember Iwashimizu was substituted after only 33 minutes. She would have been dreaming of this moment and dreaming of lifting the trophy later on. Sometimes reality can be very harsh indeed.

You know you are in a trouble when you are making changes inside 35 minutes. Japan defender Azusa Iwashimizu is hooked and is replaced by the vastly-experienced midfielder Homare Sawa. Just the 204 international caps for her.

Iwashimizu does not look to be injured but is absolutely distraught on the bench, sobbing uncontrollable as her team-mates try to comfort her.

This has been an absolutely crazy opening half hour. And Japan have another chance to score.

A cross is played to the back post and Nahomi Kawasumi does well to keep the ball alive. It is knocked back to captain Aya Miyama on the edge of the penalty area but her shot lacks power and is straight at Hope Solo.

Solo had just conceded her first goal in six games. And she nearly conceded another one a minute later.

It is like watching Barcelona versus a pub side at the moment. The Japanese defence had only conceded three goals in their first five matches but they are all over the place.

Alex Morgan is the next to try her luck. But to Ayumi Kaihori's relief she is able to dive on the ball. To be fair to Kaihori, apart from some poor positioning for Lloyd's third (America's fourth) there is not much she could have done for any of the goals. She has been completely let down by those in front of her.

And those fans are in great voice as the American national anthem rings around the stadium. The players are already tearful. Will they be able to hold it together and cope with the pressure.

The Japanese anthem is a much more sedate affair. Eyes closed, hands on hearts.

The players walk out on to the pitch and it is a packed crowd in Vancouver. With it being only 50 miles from the American border this will be like a home game for USA. 

There are expected to be 45,000 USA fans among a crowd of about 54,000. Can Japan pull off another shock and retain their World Cup trophy?

You've got to get close to Japan and not allow them to play their quick passes. Also, in attack you've got to try to stretch the pitch and run at them because they are a very organised team. England did that very well in their semi-final meeting.

One man definitely wanting USA to create some history today is wrestler turned Hollywood action star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. He has chipped in with a brilliant / crazy / bizarre motivating video telling the American team how great they are. It is well worth a watch.

It is a lovely sunny day in Vancouver with the spider cam zooming around above the pitch to show both sets of players warming up and going through their pre-match routines.

Japan coach Norio Sasaki keeps faith with the same starting XI that faced England in the semi-final.

Japan have scored nine goals in the tournament but Aya Miyama is the only player to have netted twice, converting penalties in the opening win against Switzerland and then in the semi-final against England.

USA head coach Jill Ellis names an unchanged side from the one that kicked off the semi-final against Germany.

Their team includes Carli Lloyd, who has scored in each of the last three matches, and Megan Rapinoe, who, like Lloyd, is in contention to win the Golden Ball award for the tournament's best player. Abby Wambach, the 2012 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year, begins on the bench.

But let's not forget the game tonight. And the crowds are building in Vancouver.

There may have been some sore England heads earlier today, and rightly so after celebrating a momentous 1-0 victory against European champions Germany to claim third place. What did it mean to the players? This tweet from striker Toni Duggan may give you some idea.

But the Lionesses still managed to end their tournament on a high note thanks to a victory over a Germany side that are top of the world rankings and are the current European champions.

Fara Williams kept her composure to secure a famous 1-0 victory, England's first in 21 attempts against Germany.

Anyone following England may just be a bit rueful tonight and thinking of what might have been. It was so nearly England playing tonight.

In their semi-final against Japan the score was at 1-1 when Toni Duggan hit the crossbar and the game was heading towards extra-time before Laura Bassett's heartbreaking own goal in injury time denied the Lionesses their first ever Women's World Cup final.

USA and Japan are competing in their third major women's final in a row.

We saw Japan take the first glory by beating USA 3-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw to win the 2011 World Cup final.

But it didn't take long for USA to gain their revenge, beating Japan 2-1 at Wembley to win the 2012 Olympic gold medals.

Now comes the third act.
