Can you get more sentimental than USA legends Christie Rampone and Abby Wambach going up together to collect the Women's World Cup trophy? Chants of 'USA, USA, USA' as Wambach and Rampone lift the trophy high in the air.

They are dragging this out. Now the awards for the best three players of the tournament.

Japan's Aya Miyama gets the bronze ball for being third best, Amandine Henry of France, who is not in Vancouver, is the second best player.

And, drum roll..... the best player of the tournament is USA's hat-trick hero Carli Lloyd. She has just picked up a silver boot and a golden ball in the last two minutes. She will soon have a gold medal as well.

    Hope Solo punches clear

Jacqui Oatley guessed at 80 minutes for the introduction of legendary USA striker Abby Wambach, a former Women's World Player of the Year.

But Jacqui is a minute out as Wambach comes on, to an ear-splitting shriek from the USA fans, in the 79th minute.

She is set to retire from international football after this tournament. Will we see the Hollywood ending of a World Cup final goal? She has 11 minutes to do so.

  35. Post update

  52. GOAL - USA 5-2 Japan (Tobin Heath)

    Tobin Heath celebrates

Well the fightback did not last long. And it comes from another set piece. An inswinging corner causes all sorts of problems for Japan goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori. Morgan Brian at the back post keeps her composure to square the ball and an unmarked Tobin Heath 10 yards out does the rest.

That ball definitely went over the line, the deflection completely wrong-footed Hope Solo. Julie Johnston has been excellent throughout this tournament, but it was just one of those things that happen when you are trying to clear the ball.

  54. GOAL - USA 4-2 Japan (Julie Johnston own goal)

    USA concede an own goal

Now this is getting silly. What we needed was a comedy own goal. And that's what we have got. But Julie Johnston will not be laughing though.

A cross to the back post is inadvertently flicked into her own net off the USA defender's head.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo made a desperate attempt to keep the ball out, but the ball has gone over the line.

  55. GREAT SAVE!

A penalty would have been nice. Been far too long since we had any action.

  70. SUBSTITUTION

Right, time for another substitution as Japan think they have nothing to lose any more. Unsurprisingly it is a striker that comes on with Yuika Sugasawa the player introduced, replacing midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi.

You know you are in a trouble when you are making changes inside 35 minutes. Japan defender Azusa Iwashimizu is hooked and is replaced by the vastly-experienced midfielder Homare Sawa. Just the 204 international caps for her.

Iwashimizu does not look to be injured but is absolutely distraught on the bench, sobbing uncontrollable as her team-mates try to comfort her.

  75. Post update

    USA 4-1 Japan

This has been an absolutely crazy opening half hour. And Japan have another chance to score.

A cross is played to the back post and Nahomi Kawasumi does well to keep the ball alive. It is knocked back to captain Aya Miyama on the edge of the penalty area but her shot lacks power and is straight at Hope Solo.

Solo had just conceded her first goal in six games. And she nearly conceded another one a minute later.

    Yuki Ogimi scores

The fightback starts now. A tiny, tiny glimmer of hope for Japan. And it is a composed finish from Yuki Ogimi, who spins and has time to shoot past Hope Solo.

The American goalkeeper got a hand to the shot, but the ball was just a bit too high for her.

  80. Post update

    USA 4-0 Japan

It is like watching Barcelona versus a pub side at the moment. The Japanese defence had only conceded three goals in their first five matches but they are all over the place.

Alex Morgan is the next to try her luck. But to Ayumi Kaihori's relief she is able to dive on the ball. To be fair to Kaihori, apart from some poor positioning for Lloyd's third (America's fourth) there is not much she could have done for any of the goals. She has been completely let down by those in front of her.

For the second, it’s simple defending, why is no-one picking Lloyd up? It was easy, it’s a tap-in.
  98. GOAL - USA 2-0 Japan (Carli Lloyd)

    Carli Lloyd celebrates

Is the final all over already? Another set-piece, and another horror show from the Japanese defence. They haven't learned their lesson from two minutes previously as a free-kick is sent to the near post, it is flicked on and tapped in by the unmarked Carli Lloyd. That is two goals in three minutes for her.

  99. GOAL - USA 1-0 Japan (Carli Lloyd)

Carli Lloyd scores the opening goal

The noise is even louder now. A disastrous start for Japan as USA go ahead with a well-worked goal straight off the training ground. I just wonder if USA are going to be too fired up. We have seen tears at the anthems and then an emotional captain Carli Lloyd gives a rousing speech (from what we could hear) with the American team in a huddle.

  103. The best team in Europe head home...

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

Kyle thinks England have been the best team. Well they are coming home as we speak.

Wonder if they set the airport alarms ringing with their bronze medals?

  104. 'England are the team of the tournament'

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

SMS Message: With the squad England have and what we have achieved, no matter who wins tonight England are the team of the tournament. I think USA will win 3-1 but I hope its a classic as the tournament has been brilliant and it would be a fitting finale of it was a classic. Also well done to the BBC on all formats for outstanding coverage. from From Kyle in Newcastle

  105. The anthems

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

And those fans are in great voice as the American national anthem rings around the stadium. The players are already tearful. Will they be able to hold it together and cope with the pressure.

The Japanese anthem is a much more sedate affair. Eyes closed, hands on hearts.

  106. A home from home

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

The players walk out on to the pitch and it is a packed crowd in Vancouver. With it being only 50 miles from the American border this will be like a home game for USA.

There are expected to be 45,000 USA fans among a crowd of about 54,000. Can Japan pull off another shock and retain their World Cup trophy?

  108. 'Japan await their opportunity'

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

    Rachel Brown-Finnis

    Former England goalkeeper

Quote Message: Japan are grinding teams down and waiting for their opportunity - the likes of Ogimi, Sakaguchi - they could cause the USA problems.
  109. Presidential support

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

Right, forget The Rock (see 23:37), the America team has a much more famous cheerleader.

  110. 'Lloyd is massive to USA'

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

So Abby Wambach is among the substitutes. But Carli Lloyd is in good goalscoring form for the USA with three goals in three games.

Quote Message: Carli Lloyd is massive to the USA, she likes to hold the ball up, finds spaces that no-one else does and gets herself in the box. She has great movement to get into gaps and she links up really well with the other players around her. from Rachel Yankey Former England international on BBC Two

  111. England's World Cup final representative

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

It is a big day for England-born Jill Ellis, the USA coach.

Ellis is a very popular woman with the fans in Vancouver and here she makes her way along the touchline for the match of her life, while one young fan offers a gentle reminder of the striker she wants to see in this final - veteran Abby Wambach.

Remember, Wambach begins on the bench.

  112. Can Sue finally get a prediction right?

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

    Sue Smith

    Former England forward

Quote Message: The USA really want this one - and the fact Abby Wambach has won everything apart from the World Cup gives her even more incentive. We have not seen the best of Japan yet - against England they lacked a clinical finish but you cannot rule them out. I have not got any predictions right so far but I am going USA 2-0.

  118. Got to get close...

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

What about our BBC pundits? What do they think about the match? Well, we can tell you.

Quote Message: You've got to get close to Japan and not allow them to play their quick passes. Also, in attack you've got to try to stretch the pitch and run at them because they are a very organised team. 119. The Rock is fired up

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

One man definitely wanting USA to create some history today is wrestler turned Hollywood action star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. He has chipped in with a brilliant / crazy / bizarre motivating video telling the American team how great they are. It is well worth a watch.

    The Rock
Quote Message: This is not a video to inspire you, you're already there, this is a video about how much you have inspired me and inspired the whole country through your passion, your discipline and your determination. 127. Post update

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

It is a lovely sunny day in Vancouver with the spider cam zooming around above the pitch to show both sets of players warming up and going through their pre-match routines.

  128. Japan's line-up

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

Japan coach Norio Sasaki keeps faith with the same starting XI that faced England in the semi-final.

Japan have scored nine goals in the tournament but Aya Miyama is the only player to have netted twice, converting penalties in the opening win against Switzerland and then in the semi-final against England.

  129. USA XI

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

USA head coach Jill Ellis names an unchanged side from the one that kicked off the semi-final against Germany.

Their team includes Carli Lloyd, who has scored in each of the last three matches, and Megan Rapinoe, who, like Lloyd, is in contention to win the Golden Ball award for the tournament's best player. Abby Wambach, the 2012 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year, begins on the bench.

    England

If you are unsure on how to vote, then Alistair Magowan's player ratings may help you make up your mind.

He has followed the England team around Canada and has rated the players and given his reasons why. Find out which player only got a four out of 10. And why?

  133. Voting time

Who has been the best England player of the Women's World Cup?

So England have secured a third-place finish after beating European champions Germany for the first time as Fara Williams's penalty gave the Lionesses a 1-0 win

But which England player has impressed you the most throughout the tournament? You can vote now on this page. (The vote closes at 23:55 BST.)

Your options are: Laura Bassett, Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton, Jill Scott, Fara Williams, Karen Carney or Jade Moore.

If you think our selection isn't good enough then there is also another option for any other England player.

  134. 'Wow'

    England finish third

There may have been some sore England heads earlier today, and rightly so after celebrating a momentous 1-0 victory against European champions Germany to claim third place. What did it mean to the players? This tweet from striker Toni Duggan may give you some idea.

  135. The Lionesses roar

    England finish third

But the Lionesses still managed to end their tournament on a high note thanks to a victory over a Germany side that are top of the world rankings and are the current European champions.

Fara Williams kept her composure to secure a famous 1-0 victory, England's first in 21 attempts against Germany.

  136. What might have been

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

Anyone following England may just be a bit rueful tonight and thinking of what might have been. It was so nearly England playing tonight.

In their semi-final against Japan the score was at 1-1 when Toni Duggan hit the crossbar and the game was heading towards extra-time before Laura Bassett's heartbreaking own goal in injury time denied the Lionesses their first ever Women's World Cup final.

    USA v Japan (00:00 BST)

    Japan win in 2011

USA and Japan are competing in their third major women's final in a row.

We saw Japan take the first glory by beating USA 3-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw to win the 2011 World Cup final.

But it didn't take long for USA to gain their revenge, beating Japan 2-1 at Wembley to win the 2012 Olympic gold medals.

    Now comes the third act.
