Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Ten years ago today I looked in the mirror and saw something I’d not seen before. Me, in a cassock and dog collar. It was the eve of my ordination, and the following day in that collar and cassock, in the parish church of St. Botolph Boston, amid slightly anxious new parishioners, I embarked on the ministry I attempt however clumsily to serve today. Tom, you might have baked a cake.

It was to be a week of firsts: at a baptism, when as a mark of respect one of the mums stuck her chewing gum on the side of a font; in the vestry, commenting ungenerously on a member of a visiting choir unaware that my radio mike was still on; on a train, when the bloke in the buffet car looked up and really said “More tea, Vicar?”

Ten years on the cassock is falling apart, the collar’s long been eaten by the dog, and if I was expected by now to be ‘delivering a world-class ministry’ then it’s disappointment all round

This is, in a part, a problem of volume, having more coming in than can be satisfactorily handled. That sometimes means missing things, important things, not just emails, but crises of faith, andonce a death bed. If I’m honest it’s also a sometimes a tactic to avoid an unwelcome task, an onerous chore.

But I like to think it is also because in ten years of parish ministry I’ve learned one important thing, and it’s this: don’t forget what you’re really for.

I am not a social worker, I am not a small businessman, I am not a project manager, nor a site supervisor, I’m not an accountant, I do not exercise a leadership style, nor do I ensure we are fully compliant with Health and Safety at work legislation. I am not a caterer, not an events organizer. I’m not a motivational speaker, a therapist, or a life-coach.

I’m an afterlife coach – that’s all – and the joy and the burden of this job is to help people live this life more fully, more richly, more generously, in anticipation of the next.
