  2. Kick It Out

    Football

Football's anti-discrimination group Kick It Out has launched a major exercise to tackle abuse at grass-roots level.

The campaign will see a three-month consultation exercise with players, coaches, parents and referees about their experiences of discrimination in grass-roots football, and about the reporting process for cases and how incidents are handled.

"It is important that people are aware of discrimination and its effects across all levels of the game and this consultation will help us better deliver our messages of equality and inclusion," says Roisin Wood, director of Kick It Out.

Kick It Out is also looking for volunteers to take part in a three-month pilot scheme at grass-roots level in Birmingham, Essex and West Yorkshire from August.

  3. Bristol City ready for 'cup final'

    Football

Bristol City's match against Bradford, which could see the League One leaders clinch promotion, will be like a "cup final", says defender Derrick Williams.

The Robins, who are 13 points clear of third, will return to the Championship after a two-year absence with victory at Valley Parade on Tuesday.

"We've worked hard all season, I think we deserve it now," ex-Aston Villa man Williams, 22, told BBC Radio Bristol.

"We've just got to keep doing what we're doing. Tuesday is a massive one."

  4. Surman 'proud' after whirlwind week

    Football

    Andrew Surman

Bournemouth midfielder Andrew Surman is looking to end a whirlwind few days by helping the club take another step towards promotion.

Surman's wife had their third child on Friday morning.

A few hours later he helped the Championship leaders earn a vital three points at Brighton and the Cherries travel to Reading on Tuesday.

"(We had) a daughter, who we are really proud of, and a great win," Surman told BBC Radio Solent.

  5. Bianchi still fighting, says father

    Formula 1

    Jules Bianchi

Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi's fight to recover from injuries sustained in a crash last year is the equivalent of "running a marathon every day", according to his father.

Bianchi, 25, remains in a coma, six months after the accident in Japan.

"The only thing we can say is that he's fiercely fighting as he always did, before and after the accident," Philippe Bianchi said. "From a medical point of view, his condition is stable."

The Marussia driver crashed into a recovery vehicle at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

  6. 'No plans to retire'

    Football

    Chelsea striker Didier Drogba

Any defence who might be hoping they have seen the last of Chelsea striker Didier Drogba might want to think again.

The Ivorian, who is out of contract at the end of the season, intends to carry on playing next season.

Asked if he had decided on his future, Drogba said: "Yes I have and it's not going to be my last season."

  7. Chiefs must stay focused says Baxter

    Rugby Union

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter says his side must not get carried away by their 21-10 victory over Premiership leaders Northampton.

The win sent Exeter back into the top four with three games left to play as the Chiefs became the first side to do the double over Saints this season.

"The time to enjoy today isn't today. The time to enjoy today is a few weeks time when we see whether we've achieved things at the end of the season," Baxter told BBC Radio Devon.

  8. Reed to play at Irish Open

    Golf

Patrick Reed is the latest top player to confirm their entry for the Irish Open at Royal County Down in May.

The world number 14 from Texas has won four PGA Tour titles, including a one-stroke victory in the 2014 WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral.

Reed, 24, showed passion and aggression in the Ryder Cup last September as he starred for the losing US team, with the rookie unbeaten over three days.

Rory McIlroy will be among the star players at the 28-31 May tournament.

  9. Chelsea youth crowned champions of Europe

    Football

    Chelsea

Chelsea Under-19s have won the Uefa Youth League, after a 3-2 victory over Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in Switzerland.

Izzy Brown scored twice and Dominic Solanke added another to claim the trophy.

  10. 'Noisy neighbours quietened'

    Football

    Ashley Young

There's nothing like gloating after a derby win and Manchester United winger Ashley Young has been doing just that after his side's win over Manchester City.

"We wanted to keep our noisy neighbours quiet, and we quietened them down straight away (after their goal)," he told MUTV.

"As you can imagine the atmosphere in the dressing room was electric. A win in the derby, especially in the way we did it, meant there were fantastic celebrations."

So what about playing Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday? Young added: "We feel we can beat anyone on our day."

  11. Raikkonen has Mercedes in sights

    Formula 1

    Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen

Ferrari are putting the dominant Mercedes under pressure in Formula 1 and the Italian team's driver Kimi Raikkonen is hopeful of overtaking the German outfit.

"I don't see a reason why not," says Raikkonen. "We have made big gains and we will continue to make big gains during this year."

He adds: "Sebastian [Vettel] showed we can win (in Malaysia last month), but it depends as one circuit may be better for one team and the next could be a different story.

"We just need to be up there when something happens to them, or the conditions change, but I really feel on speed we will get there to regularly beat them."

  12. Get Involved

    #bbcsportsday

With Manchester City's league title defence in tatters and the club set to end the season without a trophy, we're asking whether their manager Manuel Pellegrini should stay or go?

Let us know via Twitter using #bbcsportsday and via the BBC Sport Facebook page. Here are some of your replies...

Daniel Kelly: Pellegrini should go, and so should some of the players. They win the title, then flop. Not getting top 4 will be a big blow.

Waseem: City's performances aren't Pellegrini's fault. City had the exact same problem with Mancini. Can't keep blaming the manager

Yemimah Kwoba: I think Pellegrini should stay, along with Hart, Aguero, Silva & Milner. Let go of the rest

  13. Rangers must not be sloppy - McCall

    Football

    Rangers

Rangers boss Stuart McCall has urged his side to cut out sloppy mistakes as they head for a "thrilling" Championship season finale.

They beat Raith Rovers 4-0 on Sunday to stay third, behind Hibernian on goal difference. Whoever finishes second will face one fewer play-off game.

"I think we can still do better," McCall told BBC Radio Scotland.

"I thought there were periods in the second half where, because it was 2-0, we were a bit sloppy and casual."

  14. Wigan not playing well - Wane

    Rugby League

Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane does not think his side are playing well despite sitting third in Super League with a 100% home record.

Last year's losing Grand Finalists ran in eight tries as they beat Catalans 34-0 at the DW Stadium on Sunday.

"We're not playing well," Wane told BBC Radio Manchester.

"Today was a good performance, and I thought we managed to win well, but we're not playing anywhere near to the standard I know we can."

  15. Awford departure very tough - chairman

    Football

Portsmouth chairman Iain McInnes says the decision to part company with manager Andy Awford was the hardest of his two-year reign at Fratton Park.

Awford, 42, left his job on Monday after a season in charge of the League Two club and is the third manager to leave Fratton Park under McInnes.

"It's been a bad day," McInnes told BBC Radio Solent. "An awful day".

"Today is about Andy and how he handled himself in the most incredible fashion when we met and had a conversation."

  16. Bayern injury problems mount

    Football

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Bayern Munich will be without midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery when they travel to Porto for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Frenchman Ribery is not yet fully fit following a five-week absence with an ankle injury while Schweinsteiger has had a virus for the past few days.

The German club's Medhi Benatia, David Alaba, Javi Martinez and Arjen Robben had already been sidelined by injuries.

  17. Delroy Facey trial

    David Ornstein

    BBC Sport

Former Premier League footballer Delroy Facey went on trial accused of match fixing.

Facey, 34, from Huddersfield, and 25-year-old former semi-professional Moses Swaibu, of south London, are charged with conspiracy to fix games of football in November 2013.

During the prosecution's opening speech at Birmingham Crown Court, Nicholas Mather spoke of the so-called beautiful game's ugly side - but pointed out that this particular case focused not on the top level but the lower reaches.

He said the aim of the conspiracy was to make money.

  18. Heskey hopes for Bolton extension

    Football

    Emile Heskey

Former England striker Emile Heskey is hoping to earn a new contract for next season with Championship side Bolton.

The 37-year-old former Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan and Aston Villa forward is contracted until the end of the season and has scored once in 14 games for Neil Lennon's side.

"I'd love to stay for another year, definitely," he told BBC Radio Manchester. "I've enjoyed it. The lads have taken to me really well, I feel at home and I've got a great feeling for the club and the legs feel good.

  19. Halfpenny doubtful for European Cup semi

    Rugby Union

Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny is doubtful for Toulon's European Champions Cup semi-final against Leinster on Sunday after being forced off in his comeback game.

He appeared to suffer a shoulder injury while being tackled during the Top 14 leaders' weekend win over Grenoble.

Halfpenny had been absent with concussion sustained playing for Wales against Italy in the Six Nations.

He kicked 13 points in the first half before being replaced at the interval.

  20. World Championship qualifying

    Snooker

China's Liang Wenbo has progressed into the final round of qualifying for the World Championship after beating countryman Zhou Yuelong 10-5.

The 1997 champion Ken Doherty leads Lee Walker 7-4, Welshman Matthew Stevens is 7-6 up on Peter Lines, while Mark Davis is tied at 7-7 against Oliver Lines.

And yes, Peter and Oliver are father and son.

  21. 'A bone popped out'

    Golf

    Tiger Woods

More Masters fallout. It's not quite Rambo but Tiger Woods injured his right hand in his final round on Sunday after appearing to hit a hidden tree root when playing his second shot out of the pine straw on the ninth.

"A bone kind of popped out and a joint went out of place but I put it back in," explained Woods.

"It hurt. It definitely hurt. I didn't know there was a tree root there. I drove my hand or drove the club straight into it. It didn't move. But my body kept moving.

"There was a little joint that popped out and I was able to somehow put it back in, which didn't feel very good, but at least it got back in and I could move my hand again."

  22. IPL update

    Cricket

Sunrisers Hyderabad - the team Kevin Pietersen was set to play for before deciding to sign for Surrey as he attempts to earn an England comeback - are in action against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Ravi Bopara, who made one appearance for England at the World Cup, is playing for Sunrisers and has just missed out on a hat-trick having claimed the wickets of Virat Kohli and Mandeep Singh with successive deliveries.

  23. Seaman advice for Szczesny

    Football

    Wojciech Szczesny

Wojciech Szczesny can use his battle with David Ospina for Arsenal's number one jersey to make himself a better goalkeeper, according to former Gunner David Seaman.

"With Wojciech, it must be hard for him now to be number two, coming off the back of a season where he was a regular and had been playing at his best, but it is totally just because he had a couple of bad mistakes and Ospina has gone in and done his stuff," says Seaman.

"It is not just the games which make you play better, it is the training.

"The goalkeepers train together, and you see the other guy, you think 'I want to be better than him' or 'I am going to show him how good I am'. That is day to day and is good because it brings the best out of you and tests you, so you become a better goalkeeper."

  24. Poor from Ballance

    Cricket

    Jonathan Agnew

    BBC Test Match Special

"That was a poor shot by Gary Ballance. It was wide of the off stump and he really had to stretch for it."

  25. Wicket

    Cricket

Gary Ballance goes fishing outside off stump and is caught at first slip. England in trouble at 34-3.

    "Hello?"

  26. Notts force Middlesex collapse

    Cricket

BBC London's Kevin Hand at Lord's: Middlesex scrambled to 158-7 at tea on day two at Lord's as Nottinghamshire forced an inexplicable middle order collapse in the afternoon session.

Replying to the visitors 298, the hosts had a nervy scrap to avoid the follow of 249 as wicketkeeper John Simpson has steered the tail with his unbeaten 26.

Middlesex's chances in the match have been further hampered by the broken hand suffered by their batsman Dawid Malan in the field yesterday.

    Full scorecard

  27. Gloucestershire close in on Northants

    Cricket

BBC Bristol's Bob Hunt at Northampton: A quieter afternoon session saw Gloucestershire inch towards Northants first innings total of 333.

Four wickets fell, including Hamish Marshall for zero, but Gareth Roderick's 56 steadied the ship and it was a surprise when he was comprehensively bowled by Azharullah.

New skipper Geraint Jones is unbeaten on 60. He started explosively but settled down towards the end of the afternoon and if he carries on then his team will be looking towards a first innings lead by the close of play.

  28. Leicestershire chase mammoth score

    Cricket

BBC Radio Wales Nick Webb at Leicester: Leicestershire reached a belated tea on 59-1 against Glamorgan after the Welsh county ran up a mammoth 513-9 declared in their first innings.

The visitors added a further 92 after lunch in double-quick time as David Lloyd reached a career-best 59 not out while Andy Carter thrashed an unorthodox 21 not out, also a career best.

Ollie Freckingham and Atif Sheikh had the consolation of three wickets apiece for Leicestershire. The home side lost Dan Redfern for 24, caught off Graham Wagg, but survived without further alarms to the interval.

    Full scorecard

  29. Hampshire collapse

    Cricket

BBC Radio Sussex's Adrian Harms at Southampton: An amazing 22 minutes before tea has seen Hampshire slip from 47-0 to 63-5 with three wickets for debutant Ajmal Shahzad and 2 for young quick bowler Matt Hobden

There was no sign of the carnage to come when Michael Carberry and Liam Dawson appeared to be untroubled in their opening stand, but Carberry's dismissal sparked an extraordinary collapse.

  30. Durham surge ahead

    Cricket

BBC Radio Bristol's Andrew Gibson at Taunton: Not even an impressive spell of genuinely quick bowling by Jamie Overton could prevent Durham from taking what is already a useful first innings lead of 347-6, and that could become a dominant one.

Overton had even the vastly experienced Paul Collingwood jumping around, although it was Lewis Gregory who had the Durham captain dropped behind the stumps by Alex Barrow, just when Somerset seemed to be coming back into it. Collingwood needs 14 more for what would be a richly deserved century.

    Cricket

BBC Hereford & Worcester's Dave Bradley at New Road: Yorkshire at tea 179 for 5 a good fight back from them after being 3 for 2 before lunch. Alex Lees continued to look the part, some superb cover drives in his 87, before he wandered in front of a straight one from Gareth Andrew

Jack Shanty did the post lunch damage removing Richard Pyrah for 43 and Leaning for 10.

Sachitra Senanayake bowled a tidy first spell for Worcestershire, Moeen Ali with a short spell prior to tea looks set to be jetting off to warmer climes at the end of this game.

    Football

Plymouth Argyle boss John Sheridan says his team can succeed in the play-offs.

The Pilgrims are back in the top seven in League Two after Saturday's 2-1 win over Mansfield Town.

"I keep reading things like 'we're not good enough to play against the teams in the play-offs', it's pathetic," Sheridan told BBC Radio Devon.

"So we've got to be frightened of a team when we get in the play-offs? On our day, we're as good as anyone in the league and I've told the players that."

  33. Eighty-game ban for baseball player

    Baseball

    Jenrry Mejia

New York Mets player Jenrry Mejia has been suspended for 80 games without pay after testing positive for the banned steroid stanozolol.

The pitcher, 25, will not be able to play again until July and would be ineligible for the Major League play-offs if the Mets qualify.

"I know the rules are the rules and I will accept my punishment," Mejia said.

"But I can honestly say I have no idea how a banned substance ended up in my system."

    Football

    Ben Smith

    BBC Sport

    Mamadou Sakho

The France international will miss tonight's Premier League match with Newcastle, the FA Cup semi-final with Aston Villa at Wembley on Sunday and league games against West Brom, Hull and QPR.

Liverpool are hopeful he could be back for the trip to Chelsea on 10 May. Sakho limped out of the FA Cup quarter-final replay win over Blackburn last Wednesday, and scan results have now revealed the full extent of the injury.

The Reds play Newcastle tonight in the Premier League (20:00 BST).

  38. World Championship qualifiers

    Snooker

Agony for Sam Baird! The Englishman was going perfectly in the 12th frame against Adam Duffy, potting 15 reds and 15 blacks on the way to a maximum 147 break...but he misses the pink! That has got to hurt but he still leads 7-5.

In the other afternoon matches, 1997 champion Ken Doherty, Mark Davis and Liang Wenbo are all looking in good shape to progress.

Remember, it is the first to 10 frames to decide who goes through to the final round of qualifying.

    Football

    Branislav Ivanovic

Queens Park Rangers say they will ban "indefinitely" any fans who threw missiles during their 1-0 defeat by Chelsea at Loftus Road on Sunday.

Coins and plastic bottles were among objects thrown towards the pitch after Cesc Fabregas's 88th-minute winner.

CCTV footage of the incident is being reviewed by the club, who say they will liaise with police.

"This is not the kind of behaviour the club condones in any way, shape or form," a spokesperson said.

  40. Wicket

  42. Nicklaus praises 'incredible' Spieth

    Golf

    Jack Nicklaus

Compliments in the game of golf don't come much more precious than those from Jack Nicklaus and he has praised Jordan Spieth after the 21-year-old's Masters win.

"That was an incredible performance," says six-time Masters champion Nicklaus in a statement.

"I like everything about the young man. He's polite. He's humble. He handles himself so well, on and off the golf course. And he's obviously a wonderful player and now a Masters champion.

"I think Jordan Spieth is a great person - just as I think Rory McIlroy is - to carry the mantle for the game of golf."

  43. Saints urged to keep ambitious style

    Rugby Union

    Northampton

Northampton Saints head coach Jim Mallinder does not want the Premiership leaders to change their style of play despite suffering back-to-back defeats.

Having exited the European Champions Cup after a 37-5 loss to Clermont Auvergne, they were defeated 21-10 by Exeter in the Premiership on Sunday.

"We want our players to play with ambition and move the ball," Mallinder told BBC Radio Northampton.

"We just have to make sure that, at the right times, we look after the ball."

  44. Twelve point Boro target

    Football

Middlesbrough are fourth in the Championship but just two points off top spot. Boro play Wolves on Tuesday before games against Norwich, Fulham and Brighton and manager Aitor Karanka wants a 100% points haul to help the club achieve automatic promotion into the Premier League.

"We have to win our games," Karanka told the Middlesbrough Gazette. "I think by winning four games we will get promotion, but it is very difficult.

"We have to forget the other teams and just concentrate on our games. We will prepare to win each game but you never know.

"At this stage of the season every single point is important."

  45. Bamford apologises to Kike over penalty

    Football

    Patrick Bamford

Patrick Bamford has apologised to Middlesbrough strike partner Kike for missing a penalty they argued over near the end of Saturday's 2-0 Championship win against Rotherham.

Spanish striker Kike was fouled inside the box during injury time, prompting his claims to take the spot-kick but Bamford took it as the designated taker.

"It's all sorted. I spoke to Kike and apologised," Bamford told BBC Tees.

"If I'd scored it would have been fine but the goalkeeper has made a good save, it's one of those things. If you take penalties you'll miss some, and I felt bad missing it."

  46. Rotherham charged for ineligible player

    Football

Rotherham have been charged by the Football League with fielding an ineligible player.

Defender Farrend Rawson, on loan from Derby County, played the full 90 minutes as the Millers beat Brighton 1-0 earlier this month.

  54. Man City switch focus

    Football

    Manchester City right-back Pablo Zabaleta

Manchester City have lost five Premier League games in 2015, one more than in the whole of 2014, and it seems their focus is now on a top-four finish to qualify for next season's Champions League rather than keeping their top-flight crown.

"It is time to analyse what we are doing wrong and try to improve for the next few games," said City right-back Pablo Zabaleta following the defeat by Manchester United on Sunday.

"There are still 18 points to play for and we must be honest with ourselves and start to push hard, play better and win games, so we can get in the top four."

  55. Gloucestershire chase Northants total

    Cricket

BBC Bristol's Bob Hunt at Northampton: Despite losing two wickets late on, it was Gloucestershire's morning finishing on 112-2, 221 behind Northants first innings score.

The Northants bowlers got the ball to move about, but didn't trouble the batsmen enough on another cold and gloomy day.

Openers Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins then added 51 together without any inconvenience before Harry Gurney bowled Gubbins for 23. South African Vernon Philander, on his Notts debut, struck a vital blow by then removing Nick Compton to leave the home side on 70-2.

Middlesex are likely to be without Dawid Malan for the remainder of the match after x-rays confirmed that he'd broken a finger whilst fielding on the first day.

    Cricket

BBC Sport's Elizabeth Ammon in Taunton: A very pleasant mild morning at the County Ground saw Durham progress comfortably for the first hour until the century partnership between Scott Borthwick and Michael Richardson was broken by Lewis Gregory who induced an edge to remove Richardson for 59.

Borthwick fell agonisingly six runs short of century after a fluent innings of 94 from 110 deliveries that included 17 boundaries. Somerset's Jamie Overton has been bowling with impressive pace in front of national selector James Whittaker.

Despite the loss of two wickets, Durham have progressed their score on at a good rate and trail by just 77. Durham 224-2 at lunch.

Paul Smith: He should be able to rebuild this summer. Did United sack Fergie when they didn't win a title or trophy one year? You need stability at a club. But the way things are in football now, he will probably be sacked, and whoever they get in will be gone next season unless they win the title or champs league, if they even qualify...

Paul Farwell: It's time that the players started to take some responsibility. I think this City team will be broken up now

Kirsty Munn: I will be very surprised if they keep him, I don't agree with managers getting the sack all the time however he hasn't got the best out of the players. We need to strengthen our defence and get some players in, look at the team yesterday and in the second half, there was no passion.

  68. Are the players playing for Pellegrini?

    Football

Manchester City players during the defeat by Manchester United

There's a lot of focus on the Manchester City players for their part in the club's recent poor form and their performance in the 4-2 derby loss to Manchester United on Sunday.

Asked if the players were still playing for City boss Manuel Pellegrini, BBC Sport football pundit Phil Neville tells MOTD3: "I think they are.

"The problem I see with Man City is that everyone keeps seeing it in the big games, tactically they get it wrong. They play 4-4-2, they get outnumbered in midfield, everybody sees it but they haven't changed it.

"For a period in the game on Sunday they did, they played James Milner in midfield, they looked solid, they looked like they were strong, and then they lose a goal.

"All of a sudden they get ragged, they lose their discipline, they lose their shape and, for me, that's the biggest worry, that under extreme pressure and when things go wrong they folded a little bit and if I was Pellegrini I'd be really concerned about that."

But this season has been more of a struggle for the 2008 FA Cup winners and their minimal League Two play-off hopes were ended by a 3-1 defeat at Morecambe on Saturday.

  75. Manager Awford leaves Portsmouth

BBC Sport pundit Trevor Sinclair: "Pellegrini looks worried to me. The results haven't been good enough for Manchester City - the size of the club now, they expect to be challenging every year and to fall away as they have done this season is very poor.

More fallout from the derby. Manchester City were left fourth in the Premier League after their defeat by arch rivals Manchester United and are five points ahead of fifth-placed Southampton and seven in front of Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

BBC Sport pundit Phil Neville: "The pressure is mounting massively [on Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini] because the results are going in the wrong direction.

"His team have lost momentum, they are now looking over their shoulder maybe at Liverpool, who play against Newcastle. If they win that they are thinking can they catch Man City.

"So going from a strength of can we win the league to now thinking can we finish in the top four, I don't think that's good enough for a club like Man City. With players they've got. The players aren't performing but I think the manager sometimes, particularly with his tactics, are letting his team down."
