What a difference one song can make to a band’s career. Before releasing Rather Be - one of the defining musical moments of 2014 and fairly inescapable even now - Clean Bandit had set their stall out as a hopeful meeting point between the string arrangements of classical composers such as Mozart and Shostakovich, and the pounding disco rhythms of deep house. They came fresh out of Cambridge University with a headful of crazy ideas and a lot of guest vocalists - including Rae Morris, Sharna Bass, Stylo G and Jess Glynne - ready to try them out.
No one could have predicted that they would graduate so quickly from the In New Music We Trust stage at last year’s Big Weekend, to the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury, and then - after a hot and very busy summer - to an auditorium in Salford to work with the BBC Philharmonic and then off to America to pick up the Grammy for Best Dance Recording. And that’s just one song. Small wonder their first single of 2015 was entitled Stronger.
