  3. Estate agent petitioned over 'homeless spikes'

    A London estate agent is being petitioned to remove 'anti-homeless spikes' outside its West End branch after pictures of the controversial deterrents surfaced online, the Independent reports.

    Human rights activist and paralegal, Zahira Patel, 24, started the online campaign against the spikes outside Foxtons West End estate agents.

    In her change.org post she says: "Sadly, this is yet another move in a long line of 'defensive architecture' aimed at deterring homeless people from sleeping in highly visible places."

    More than 132,000 people backed a similar campaign last year when a London apartment block on London's Southwark Bridge Road placed the metal studs in its doorway, which were eventually removed.

  4. Former Arsenal goalie Ian McKechnie dies

    Former Arsenal goalkeeper Ian McKechnie has died aged 73.

    Mr McKechnie joined the club in 1958 as an outside left but then became a goalkeeper, and went on to make 25 appearances. He left to join Southend United in 1964 and later went on to Hull City.

    Arsenal paid tribute to him on its website: "The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Ian's family and friends."

  7. Huge delays: A12 Blackwall Tunnel approach southbound

    The A12 Blackwall Tunnel approach southbound is closed due to an accident between the Bow Interchange and Lochnagar Street and Zetland Street.

    It's causing long delays including major congestion on the A12 East Cross Route to Hackney Wick and affecting traffic heading South towards the Blackwall Tunnel.

  8. Black cabs launch new Uber protest

    Black-cab drivers in London have started a poster campaign aimed at highlighting their struggle with app-based taxi service Uber.

    Taxis and billboards across the capital have been daubed with posters claiming Uber does not pay tax in the UK.

    But Uber said the facts in the posters were "simply wrong" and it complied with tax rules.

  9. 'Miracle autism cure' seller exposed

    A self-styled "reverend" who claims autism can be "purged" by swallowing bleach has been exposed by a BBC London undercover investigation.

    Leon Edwards sold sodium chlorite and hydrochloric acid to a reporter posing as the relation of an autistic child. Combined, the chemicals form bleach.

    The BBC has also learned the secret location of a conference to begin in Surrey on Friday to promote the 'cure'. When confronted with the evidence, Mr Edwards made no comment.

  10. London's 'best buildings'

    The planned Garden Bridge crossing for the Thames has been nominated in the Transport and Infrastructure category in think tank New London Architecture's New London Awards.

  11. New Wimbledon contract for Kennedy

    AFC Wimbledon left-back Callum Kennedy has signed a new contract with the League Two club.

    The 25-year-old, who joined the Dons in the summer of 2013, made 30 appearances in all competitions last season.

    League Two newcomers Barnet have signed defender Gavin Hoyte on a two-year deal after his departure from Gillingham.

    The 25-year-old right-back, a Trinidad & Tobago international, made 35 appearances for the Gills last season.

  13. 'Twitter terrorist lacked creativity'

    More on "Twitter terrorist" Alaa Esayed, who has been jailed for three and a half years for encouraging terrorism and disseminating a terrorist publication.

    In mitigation, her lawyer Tanvir Qureshi said: "Yes, she is a Twitter terrorist but she is a Twitter terrorist who lacked creativity. She did not have a blog. She was blindly cutting and pasting."

    He said her postings were just "propaganda" and there was no practical advice to any budding terrorists.

    But jailing her, Judge Charles Wide told her: "This material and its dissemination is an important factor in the encouragement of young men and women to travel abroad and engage in acts of terrorism.

    "It is a matter of great and justified public concern. You were disseminating such material on a massive scale over a period of just short of a year."

  14. Jail for woman who harboured killer

    A woman who gave shelter to a murderer has been sent to prison for 18 months by judges who ruled her earlier suspended sentence was too light.

    Fiona Cullum, from Kilburn, was found guilty at the Old Bailey in March of helping one of the killers of nursery school teacher Sabrina Moss after she was gunned down in the street while celebrating her 24th birthday.

    Today Cullum, 25, was told at the Court of Appeal that her sentence of 24 months, suspended for two years, for perverting the course of justice, "unduly lenient".

  15. 'Alpha male' banking practices criticised

    Virgin Money's chief executive has hit out at the "alpha maleness" that has run through banking.

    "Winning at all costs" has long been a problem in banking, Jayne-Anne Gadhia told BBC radio.

    Ms Gadhia's comments follow the governor of the Bank of England's attack on ethics in the City of London in his annual Mansion House speech.

  16. O's owner to contest Albania charges

    Leyton Orient owner Francesco Becchetti says he will contest "baseless" charges of fraud and money laundering.

    A court in Albania issued arrest warrants for Becchetti, 48, his 73-year-old mother Liliana Condomitti and two business associates earlier this week, and the charges against them carry a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.

    The Italian, who bought Orient from Barry Hearn last summer said the allegations, which relate to a failed hydroelectric scheme, were "groundless and politically motivated".

  17. 'Twitter terrorist' jailed

    Esayed also used Instagram to post graphic pictures of corpses and prisoners about to be beheaded as part of her social media campaign.

    The scale of her activities between June 2013 and May 2014 came to the attention of al Qaida.

    Her Twitter profile of a woman in a burka with one finger raised and holding a Kalashnikov was listed by the terror group as among the 66 most important jihadist accounts.

  18. Actor Christopher Lee dies

    British actor Christopher Lee, who was best known for playing Count Dracula and starred in The Lord of the Rings, has died aged 93.

    Born in Chelsea, the actor starred in a string of Hammer Horror films, as well the James Bond film The Man With The Golden Gun, cult classic The Wicker Man, two Star Wars prequels, and The Hobbit film trilogy.

    Well known for his distinctive voice he was knighted for services to drama and charity in 2009. He received the BAFTA Fellowship in 2011 and received the BFI Fellowship in 2013.

    He died in the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Sunday.

  19. Pedestrian killed in road collision

    A pedestrian has died after being in a collision with a lorry near Bromley this morning.

    Extensive road closures were put in place around Hilda Vale Road in Farnborough Common while investigations got underway.

    Police have not released any details about the victim but said the lorry driver has not been arrested.

    A Kennington woman who admitted being a prolific "Twitter terrorist" has been jailed for three years and a half years at the Old Bailey.

    Iraqi Alaa Esayed was sentenced after admitting charges of encouraging terrorism and disseminating a terrorist publication.

    Between June 2013 and May 2014, the 22-year-old posted more than 45,000 tweets in Arabic on an open account to her 8,240 followers with many encouraging violent jihad.

  28. Appeal to trace stolen jewellery

    Police are trying to trace around 230 items of jewellery stolen from a house during a burglary in Haringey.

    The items taken from the property in Cissbury Road include a lady's wrist watch made by Relide and a silver bracelet with 17 enamel charms showing the coats of arms of European cities.

    The family were out at the time of the break in.

  29. Man arrested over Wallington fire

    A man armed with a knife who refused to come out of a burning building in south west London has been arrested, the Met Police has said.

    Officers were called at 03:13 to reports of a house fire in Sandy Lane South, Wallington.

    Firefighters got the fire under control from the street and officers from the Met's Territorial Support Group entered the building where they found the 40-year-old man in the bathroom. He was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and taken to hospital by officers.

  30. Fagin actor Ron Moody dies

    Actor Ron Moody, who played Fagin in the hit film version of Oliver!, has died aged 91, his family says.

    The Tottenham-born actor was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe for his performance in the 1968 Charles Dickens adaptation.

    He also appeared in EastEnders as Edwin Caldecott, an old nemesis of Jim Branning, and played wizard Merlin in Disney's A Kid in King Arthur's Court.

  32. Challenge to South Bank redevelopment rejected

    Mr Turner had led residents' opposition to the mixed-use scheme. Other objectors included English Heritage, the Twentieth Century Society and Westminster Council

    Opponents claimed the new development would damage views of the Unesco world heritage site of Westminster Palace from Green Park.

    The Shell Centre proposals will see the demolition of most of the centre's current structures for replacement with eight new buildings for shops, office space, restaurants and homes based around the original 1961 Shell Centre tower.

  33. Challenge to South Bank redevelopment rejected

    A legal challenge to the £1.3bn Shell Centre redevelopment on London's South Bank has been rejected by the Court of Appeal.

    Three judges dismissed an action brought by writer and activist George Turner over the grant of planning permission by the Communities and Local Government Secretary.

    The ruling followed the dismissal of Mr Turner's case by a High Court judge in February.

  34. Cyclist suffers 'serious head injuries' in crash

    A cyclist is in hospital with 'serious head injuries' after being hit by a car in Shoreditch last night, the Evening Standard reports.

    Paramedics treated the man at the scene in Hackney Road, just before 11pm. Police said he is in a "serious but stable" condition in hospital.

    No one has been arrested over the accident.

  37. Central London house price 'fall', says report

    House prices in some parts of central London have fallen by up to 22% since last Autumn, according to the property services group LSL.

    The company said that prices had fallen by 16% in Kensington and Chelsea prices since a peak in September 2014 and in Westminster there had been a fall of 22% between a peak in November, and the end of May.

    It blamed the fall on the new stamp duty regime, introduced in December, which penalises expensive properties.

    West Ham have signed Spain Under-21 midfielder Pedro Obiang from Italian club Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee.

  40. Bank of England governor attacks 'irresponsible' City

    Bank of England governor Mark Carney has called for longer prison sentences for bankers who break the law, in a speech attacking on ethics in the City.

    In his Mansion House speech Mr Carney warned: "The age of irresponsibility is over."

    The chancellor and the governor were speaking as the Fair and Effective Markets Review was published - a report by the Bank, the Treasury and the Financial Conduct Authority on strengthening controls in financial markets. The report recommends maximum sentences for wrongdoing should be lengthened from seven years to 10.

  42. Sir Tim Hunt resigns from university role over girls comment

    A Nobel laureate has resigned from his position as honorary professor at University College London (UCL) after he made comments about the "trouble with girls" in science.

    Sir Tim Hunt told a conference that women in labs "cry" when criticised and "fall in love" with male counterparts. He told the BBC he "did mean" the remarks but was "really sorry".

    A statement from UCL said: "UCL was the first university in England to admit women students on equal terms to men, and the university believes that this outcome is compatible with our commitment to gender equality."

  44. Teenager killed in Islington stabbing

    A teenager has been stabbed to death in north London. The 17-year-old boy was found in Caldy Walk, Islington, shortly after 18:00 yesterday and he died in an east London hospital a short time later, police said.

    Officers said they believed they knew his identity but were awaiting formal identification and confirmation that next-of-kin had been informed. No arrests have been made.

  45. Tower Hamlets residents go to the polls

    Voters in Tower Hamlets are going to the polls to vote for a new mayor.

    The election was called after mayor Lutfur Rahman was convicted of electoral fraud and removed from office in April. He has been banned from standing again.
