Gender pay transparency? One South Yorkshire MP's dream
Jenny Cork
BBC Sheffield, Local Live
Back in December 2014, Rotherham Labour MP Sarah Champion had a bit of a Dagenham moment...
Her bill to require greater pay transparency cleared its first hurdle by 258 votes to eight.
The Labour MP for Rotherham said equal pay was "still no more than a promise", and claimed women earned £200,000 less than men over a lifetime.
At the time, Ms Champion said her bill was an opportunity to honour the women of Ford Dagenham 48 years ago.
And now, news today that companies that fail to address pay differences between male and female employees will be highlighted in new league tables.
Those with more than 250 employees will be forced to reveal their pay gap.
