  2. The death of European rugby?

    Rugby Union

England out at the pool stage, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and France all losing in the quarter-finals... hard luck stories aside, it has not been a good Rugby World Cup for the northern hemisphere.

BBC Sport's chief sports writer Tom Fordyce examines why and where it went wrong and how European rugby can recover.

    Read his thoughts here.

  3. Mourinho comments 'delivered calmly'

    Football

More on the FA's written reasons for fining Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho £50,000 and giving him a suspended one-match stadium ban...

In response to another Mourinho point of mitigation – that his comments were made post-match with tensions running high, the panel ruled that was “no excuse”.

They added: “Mr Mourinho is an experienced manager and an experienced interviewee. This was not some spur-of-the-moment unguarded outburst. These were quite lengthy comments, delivered calmly and in a controlled way."

  4. Fines 'on their own not a deterrent for Mourinho'

    Football

The FA has published its written reasons for fining Jose Mourinho £50,000 – a punishment the Portuguese described as “astonishing” and which he said he will appeal against – for his comments about referees not giving Chelsea penalties following  a 3-1 home loss to Southampton.

He was also given a one-match stadium ban, suspended for 12 months.

The FA panel claimed that increasing levels of fines are “not on their own going to be a reliable deterrent” for Mourinho.

Mourinho had also tried to argue in mitigation that English is not his first language, but the panel decided “his English is far too sophisticated for that to affect our conclusion”.

  5. How rugby is helping kids in Memphis

    Rugby union

    BBC Radio 5 Live

It might not be the first sport you would associate with the United States, but rugby has transformed the lives of some teenagers living in inner-city Memphis, Tennessee.

Non-profit organisation Memphis Inner City Rugby was setup by college graduates Shane Young and Devin O'Brien in 2012 to bring low-income players to the sport and boost their aspirations.

Listen to this clip to find out more about the fascinating project.

  6. Dar withdrawn from India-SA series

    Cricket

Umpire Aleem Dar has been withdrawn from the India-South Africa series by the International Cricket Council.

The governing body made the decision after far-right Hindu nationalists stormed the Board of Control for Cricket in India offices in Mumbai.

Shiv Sena party activists threatened to prevent Pakistani Dar from standing in the fifth one-day international in Chennai on Sunday.

Dar is a three-time winner of the ICC's Umpire of the Year award.

  7. Goalscoring keeper 'got lucky'

    Football

Stevenage goalkeeper Jesse Jorenen has played down his achievement in scoring against Wycombe.

The 22-year-old Finn kicked the ball upfield from the edge of his area and then saw it bounce over opposite number Matt Ingram, with Boro going on to win Saturday's League Two game 2-1.

"For me it was just a clearance. There was not much else to it, I got lucky with the wind and that was basically it," he told BBC Look East.

  8. England World Cup review

    Rugby union

Former England forward Ben Kay has been named among the five-man panel to review the hosts' dismal World Cup campaign and ex-team-mate Austin Healey has responded with a touch of sarcasm.

Kay dropped the ball within a metre of a certain England try during the 2003 World Cup final against Australia.

Just think, Jonny Wilkinson's winning drop goal may never have been necessary...

  9. Moores signs new Notts contract

    Cricket

Former England head coach Peter Moores has extended his contract as a coaching consultant at Nottinghamshire for a further two years.

    Football

West Brom winger James McLean has been formally warned about his behaviour by the Football Association after he celebrated the Baggies’ 1-0 home victory over Sunderland on Saturday in front of the travelling supporters.

"I want to play for the right team and the right manager who plays the right way. I'm just excited to play a game."

  16. Cole on Coventry loan move

    Football

  18. Cellino fails owners' test

    Football

    More Leeds news

Leeds chairman Massimo Cellino has been disqualified by the Football League after failing its owners' and directors' test.

A statement from the Football League says:

"In June, Mr Cellino was found guilty by a Court in Sardinia of an offence under Italian tax legislation relating to the non-payment of VAT on the importation of a Land Rover vehicle.  This resulted in a fine of €40,000 and the confiscation of the vehicle in question.

"Having considered detailed legal advice and the Court’s reasoned judgment, as supplied by Mr Cellino, the board determined that the decision of the Italian Court constitutes a disqualifying condition under the owners' and directors' test.

"Mr Cellino has until 28 October to appeal against the board's decision.  Any such appeal would be heard by an independent panel."

    Rugby Union

Rugby's governing body has no plans to review the use of the television match official (TMO), despite a furore after it was not invoked during the controversial finale of Australia's World Cup quarter-final win over Scotland.

Australia edged the Scots 35-34 at Twickenham with a last minute three-pointer and, while TV replays showed the decisive penalty may have been awarded in error, the referee had not been permitted to consult the TMO due to the nature of the infringement.

"In the build-up to the tournament we have been at pains to explain the exact remit and protocols around the TMO," a World Rugby (WR) spokesman told Reuters on Monday.

I never feel we are going to lose which is a big change and shows how far we have come.

“Over the 20 odd years that we have been doing this, to get pretty much 100 per cent success rate on the players we have brought in is unheard of. They have all fulfilled our optimism and expectation.”

    Leeds sack Rosler

    Uwe Rosler

Uwe Rosler started his Leeds reign with a six-game unbeaten run. Granted, five of those were draws, but it remains as encouraging a start as Leeds have had for quite a while - particularly the 2-1 win at Derby (comprising arguably the best half of football they have managed in years). But that run was ended by a 1-0 home defeat by Ipswich - one of three losses at Elland Road on the bounce.

The 2-1 loss to Brighton on Saturday has done for Rosler - the latest managerial victim of the Massimo Cellino era. You suspect he won't be the last.

    Analysis

    Adam Pope

    BBC West Yorkshire Sport

    Uwe Rosler

Uwe Rosler'ssacking byLeeds United is a big surprise. Not in the sense that we are used to Massimo Cellino regularly firing head coaches, but the fact the owner told me a few weeks ago that he was prepared to stick by the German and build for a promotion push next year.

Ultimately, though, three consecutive defeats and just two wins all season have done for Rosler, who admitted promotion was not the agenda this year. His realism disappointed many fans and the "heavy metal" football he wanted did not have time to evolve.

Another one bites the dust at Elland Road, where instability reigns again.

  108. Evans in the frame?

    Leeds sack Rosler

We're still awaiting official confirmation from Leeds that Uwe Rosler has been sacked but BBC West Yorkshire Sport are reporting it as fact.
