  1. Goodnight, and stay safe

    Dustin Brown

Anyway, what a day. What a match. What a man.

Doubtless there'll be all sorts of drama on Friday too. We are heading to the hills to prepare for a day that includes Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova, Grigor Dimitrov and Nick Kyrgios in action, before top seed Serena Williams takes on top Briton Heather Watson.

Can't wait. See you there. I'm off to watch Wimbledon 2Day. You should too. It's on the live coverage tab on this very page.

    BBC Radio 5 live sport

    Dustin Brown

Dustin Brown on BBC Radio 5 live: "It is an unbelievable feeling. I am very happy I got to show my style on this stage and against such a great champion in Rafa. I have played Rafa before on a grass court and there was some belief if I could put it together, I could have a great match."

At 5-4 in third set, when he left a volley: "When I sat down I was thinking that I had served well since qualifying and I needed to try and do the same thing. If he came up with the goods, then fair enough. I was nervous but I served for a lot of matches and sets this year and ended up losing. If it ended up being that way so be it."

  4. It's not the end for me - Nadal

Rafael Nadal has been dragged in front of the press for a fuller explanation for his defeat.

"It's not the end. It is a sad moment for me but life continues. My career, too. I have to keep going and working more than ever to try to change that dynamic," he said.

"I am a good loser. When I am not that good, I always accept.

"You know, at the end of the day, today I lost. Don't forget I played five finals here. I don't know how many players did that."

  6. An epic on court 18...

You think the tennis is done for the day?

Take a good hard look at yourself.

There is still a humdinging five-setter ongoing on court 18.

Alexandr Dolgopolov and Ivo Karlovic are 9-9 in the decider. The winner plays Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. And you can watch it right here via the live coverage tab.

  7. No double joy for Ward

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

    James Ward

Think you've had a hectic day at work? I'd place a small wager on it not being as labour intensive as James Ward's efforts to earn a living.

The 28-year-old Londoner reached the last 32 of a Grand Slam singles for the first time earlier, then had to reenergise himself for a men's doubles match.

However, it is not a double celebration for Ward. His Anglo-Aussie partnership with Matthew Ebden went down 7-5 6-2 7-6 (7-3) against Teymuraz Gabashvili and Yen-Hsun Lu as the summer sun set in SW19.

    Tim Henman

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 live

"I think Federer or Murray would have beaten Brown today. They both return better and are more confident, Rafa has struggled with confidence.

"Confidence is the sum of your thoughts. When you have won 14 Grand Slams and 60 odd tour titles, it amazes me how fragile Rafael Nadal's confidence is.

"He has talked about how he really struggles with nerves in matches and that amazes me. He needs to find a solution to that because he is still young."

  9. Post update

    John McEnroe

Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"Rafa admitted publicly he was struggling for confidence and maybe that inspired players in the locker room. While honesty is the best policy, maybe it isn't here. I still believe he will win a few majors."

"Perhaps Rafa needs fresh blood in his corner. Uncle Toni has done an excellent job but clearly at this stage, some fresh ideas might be in order.

He joked: " I am saying get a new damn coach. The unthinkable has happened four years in a row to Rafa now."

    Fans on the hill

"Dustin Brown has been a perennial journeyman, he rose to the occasion against a great player. He is just going for it. He was trying everything, it had to be a record in drop volleys? Unbelievable but effective. If we had half the tour that played like Brown and half that played from the baseline, that would be absolutely amazing."

  13. Post update

What next for Dustin Brown. Well, an ice bath, a celebratory swig of isotonic and Viktor Troikci in the short term.

But, further forward, can he use this win as a launchpad to somewhere higher than 102nd in the world?

    The signs are promising.

Lukas Rosol was 100th in the world when he beat Nadal in 2012, he is now 41st.

Steve Darcis was 135th in the world when he did the same in 2013, he is now 80th.

Nick Kyrgios was 144th in 2014, he is now 29th.

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

With the drama now over on Centre Court, the ticket holders may be tempted to indulge in more tennis pleasure on the outer courts. But fans are already packed into the tight gangways between courts six, seven, 10 and 11, standing five or six deep as they keep tabs on the doubles.

LukeyRoe: In all fairness @DreddyTennis deserved it! Quality to watch and a quality result. Absolute scenes.

Hashim: Only a year ago people were talking of Nadal easily winning 20 or more grand slam titles. How unlikely does that sound today?

Linda MacDonald: Can Djokovic, Murray and Federer learn something from Dan Brown re how to beat each other on grass?

Erm Linda, I think Dan Brown might be able to help with battling the dark forces of Opus Dei. How to battle the forces of Djokovic though is probably out of his expertise.

More from Dustin Brown's post-match interview on BBC Two: "When I went for my shots and started really well that helped. I didn't want to get into any long rallies. That last game was unbelievable. I kept saying 'Dustin concentrate and even if you lose no-one is going to say anything bad, so just get through it.'."

  20. Fortunate to play Nadal on grass - Brown

    Nadal 5-7 6-3 4-6 4-6 Brown

    Brown and Nadal

German qualifier Dustin Brown on BBC Two after his win against Rafael Nadal: "You have to play your A game against him. I am fortunate I played him twice on grass, which is my favourite surface - I wouldn't want to play him anywhere else. My game makes him not play his game. He doesn't get in a rhythm. The set he beat me he passed me unbelievable."

  21. Post update

    Marion Bartoli

    2013 Wimbledon champion

"Rafa Nadal is too much of a champion to not come back to the level he played. He needs to find a reason why his forehand is not working. You can't write him off. He won 14 grand slams. He has had a bad season but I'm sure next season he will find a way back."

    Rafael Nadal

"It is is another disappointment for Rafa and I just think how many blows can he take like this? He doesn't just turn up to these tournaments, his set up is too professional and this is another blow for him to take.

"Dustin Brown has made £30,000 this year, he is guaranteed £77,000 just now. It is not an overnight thing. It is nice to see a dream come true on centre court."

  23. Dustin dazzles on Centre Court debut

    Nadal 5-7 6-3 4-6 4-6 Brown

    Dustin Brown

Victorious qualifier Dustin Brown on BBC Two: "I had never been on Centre Court before today. They asked me if I wanted to go on before and I said no. I thought I would freak out but it felt very familiar.

"Being on grass with Nadal, having won last match, made me feel more comfortable. It was easier to play my game against him because I had nothing to lose."

    Who is Dustin Brown?

This is the chat you need to have around the water cooler tomorrow.

If you are taking liberties with the truth you could add that he uses his dreadlocks as a counter-lever to inject more power into his groundstrokes. Much in the style of a Roman catapult.

  25. Brown stuns Nadal

    Nadal 5-7 6-3 4-6 4-6 Brown

    John McEnroe

Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

    Brown

"Dustin Brown said it perfectly, he had it absolutely dead on, the game plan was perfect. He picked his spots, he went for it and he knew when to conserve his energy. It was one of the all-time great efforts from an unknown player I have ever seen.

"I am thinking there are lot of kids and a lot of professional players toiling in the minor leagues thinking, maybe that style can work at Wimbledon. It was special.

"Don't make him even think about his next match right now. He just beat Rafael Nadal, certainly one of the the greatest players ever. I saw Brown beat Lleyton Hewitt a couple of years ago here and I thought then he was really dangerous then. It would be nice to see him play close to that level against guys he is more expected to beat."

And it was an ace to crown the biggest win of his career.

Dustin Brown has been immense and Centre Court rises in unison to acclaim the German.

    Nadal 5-7 6-3 4-6 4-5 Brown*

Dustin Brown into a 0-30 lead. Is he going to flick the switch and turn of the lights early?

Oh! A sliding forehand slice out wide. Rafa cannot scrape off his toes. 15-40 and two match points.

Into the net on the first. Rafa plops up a very volleyable forehand, Brown shoulders arms, willing it long, it drops in.

    A Nadal ace.

Chance gone. But the biggest one is still to come.

Now Rafael Nadal is having to deal with some Bodyline tactics.

The Spaniard cowers for cover as Dustin Brown's battered backhand volley skims a whisker past his sweatband. Proper chin music and the Spaniard is not feeling the groove. That is 30-30.

Brown tucks into a Nadal serve like an all-you-can-eat buffet, slapping away a backhand winner that his opponent does not even move for. Deuce.

Nadal makes his escape, but on the judges scorecards he is well behind.

Centre Court rapt. The annual first-week Rafa blow-out is becoming quite a tradition after Rosol, Darcis and Krygios.

  53. Brown breaks

    Nadal 5-7 6-3 4-6 0-1 Brown*

Dustin Brown is not backward in coming forward. The German advances behind a nothing-much slice forehand and wins the point.

Rafael Nadal, perhaps at a bit of loss tactically, has a bash at the same. Brown slugs a fine double-handed backhand punch down the line for a winner.

Deuce. Rafa swaying on the ropes, jaw wide open and Brown swinging big haymaking forehands. Break point Brown. A mammoth rally. Rafa tries to lasso his way to safety, but ropes in a dud. A forehand between the tramlines and now it would almost be a Rafa win that would be the shock result...

  55. Who is Dustin Brown?

    Dustin Brown

He could be on course for a big shock at Wimbledon, but how much do you know about Dustin Brown?

The German, whose highest ranking was 78th in the world in June 2014, competes mainly on the ATP Challenger Tour.

His best performance at a Grand Slam was reaching the third round of Wimbledon in 2013, beating Lleyton Hewitt in the second round before losing to France's Adrian Mannarino.

    *Nadal 5-7 6-3 4-6 Brown

    Softly, softly, catchy Rafa.

Dustin Brown carefully pats away a volley into open court to set up 40-15 and two set points. The serve is as indecipherable as hieroglyphics to Nadal though. His return floats into the top of the net and he is backed up to the cliff edge.

Play is momentarily paused by the umpire because of an intruder on court three - a big bumble bee. The pesky insect bothers one of the line judges, who is forced into evasive action by jumping to his feet and leaving his seat.

The action resumes - and then comes the real sting. Troicki breaks Bedene's serve to eye up a smooth passage into round three.

Centre Court is buzzing in the sheer presence of Federer. He might not be every tennis fan's cup of tea - but they won't have a bad word said about him here at Wimbledon.

Querrey is finding his rhythm nicely in the opening 12 minutes, light on his feet and convincing with his groundstrokes. Federer goes long as the American holds another service game.

He has done it! James Ward reaches the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career - at the ripe old age of 28. Well done young man!

There was a mini-wobble though, Ward digging himself out of a hole at 30-15 down with his 15th ace, then drawing Jiri Vesely into a long forehand after a brief rally.
