  1. Goodbye

    Yasir Shah and Adil Rashid

What a superb day's cricket - and well done to Pakistan.

They were almost denied by Yorkshire... Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid batted for 429 balls out of a team total of 825.

That's more than half. If only they could have put up the Yorkshire wall for an extra 40 deliveries.

But it wasn't to be and we head to the decider on Sunday with the hosts 1-0 up in the series. Thanks for your company today, it's been a pleasure as always.

    Bye for now.

  2. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Can England win in Sharjah if they don't win the toss?

"It's starting to look like they can't. But they lost the toss in Abu Dhabi and nearly won the game. The bowlers have bowled well on this trip, the batting group has to help them out."

  3. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Batting over 130 overs in the fourth innings will boost them. The fact that Adil Rashid batted for 172 balls, the way Mark Wood batted... it hurts you when you get blasted out for 50 by Mitchell Johnson, but they can take positives from here."

  4. Player view

Alastair Cook shakes hands with Wahab Riaz at the end of the match

More from England captain Alistair Cook on Sky Sports: "I seemed to have been involved in a few of these. It is not easy watching. It is frustrating. Full credit to the way the boys batted today. We showed character but the third morning cost us. We are doing a lot of good things. Nine of the 10 days we're fairly even for me.

"You always think that it is never over. Mark Wood and Jimmy are capable so it wasn't impossible. Some good things have come out of this but we shouldn't have been in that position. Whether it is naivety not to knuckle down knowing Wahab can only bowl six or seven in a spell.

"I am proud of my fitness. Yesterday I had a sore groin that hampered me. Maybe these days in the heat have taken their toll. I should be OK for the third Test.

"Moeen [Ali] didn't quite get it right with the ball. Sometimes when you are expected to turn it and take wickets you try too hard and force it. He will be disappointed. We are lucky we have a six-man attack to share the load.

"Jos [Buttler] is going through a tough time. This is what happens in international cricket, that someone is struggling."

  5. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

    Stuart Broad

"Stuart Broad - I know he's my mate, but this is the best I've seen him bat for 18 months to two years, since he's got hit against India. I see positive signs with the bat - Mark Wood was brilliant, he's got such good technique against spin."

  6. Email tms@bbc.co.uk

Former Surrey, Notts, Middlesex and Kent batsman Scott Newman: Again this shows players inability to play spin. Probably due to the fact that there is not enough exposure against spin in county cricket.

  11. Email tms@bbc.co.uk

Hashim in Leeds: Geoffrey, as much as I respect him, his comments about the Pakistan side are unfair. You have to give credit where it is due. Plenty of teams have lost here. They can't be all that bad.

  12. Player reaction

    Misbah ul_Haq

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq: "You have to give credit to the opposition. They played very well on the last day against two really good spinners. They showed character. Overall, the spinners bowled well, under pressure. When we needed the breakthrough they kept their nerve.

"It was tough in the first innings, but in the second I got in and things started to go well. It is tough when you are not playing competitive cricket for a long time and then coming back to perform."

On batsman Younus Khan: "It is all about discipline and belief. When he goes in he does so with a purpose. No matter what situation, he is always there to perform. He is a great role model."

  13. Captain's view

    Alastair Cook

England captain Alastair Cook: "The morning of day three has cost us this game. To be that many at the end of the day cost us. In these conditions you can't afford to have those two or three hours. But the character we have shown today... we are disappointed not to get over the line.

"These are a fantastic bunch of players. The lower order showed a lot of character. I was half hoping the umpires would give us the light with nine overs to go to even it up from the first Test.

"We will dust ourselves off. It will be a great last Test."

  14. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

    Team changes for Sharjah?

"Buttler has to go, his keeping's not great and he's dropping catches. Bairstow will have to keep, and James Taylor would have played all three Tests if I were chairman of selectors. You can't go on with Moeen Ali up front, even if he gets 100 next match, he's not an opener. You can either do it or you can't, he should be batting at seven or eight. I don't know if Hales is an opening bat, he's the one they've picked. Get Taylor in, and if Bell has to go, he has to go. We can't keep waiting for him to get a hundred, but I don't think they have the courage to drop him."

  16. Post update

Adil Rashid shakes hands at the end of the match

Adil Rashid batted for 239 minutes in that second innings - more than anyone else in the England team. Has be shown he could be a future option at number six for England?

  17. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"When you fancy beating a side on a dry surface which doesn't help Anderson and Broad, it's difficult when you keep collapsing. Anderson and Broad can bowl sides out at grounds like Edgbaston and Nottingham when it swings, they've bowled very well here but aren't going to really hurt you. We haven't got any other matchwinning bowlers, so when Cook and Root don't get scores, it's difficult for us to win."

  18. How's stat?!

  19. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

    What about Pakistan?

"If you look at their side, it's not a great side. They have batsmen who you'd like a bowl against - Jimmy Anderson could get their opener [Shan Masood] out with an orange. The left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar bowled two magic balls today, but normally he's ordinary. The best bowler is Yasir Shah, eight wickets in the match on a very good cricket pitch. If they'd had a good batting side, England might have got out of this easily."

  20. Man of the match

    Wahab Riaz

Man of the match Wahab Riaz, who took three wickets to reduce England from 206-3 to 216-6 in their first innings: "It was a very important spell. Everyone was putting a lot of effort in. This game is crucial for us. I always try to do well and perform for my country. The management keep me focused and push me. Credit goes to them."

  21. Post update

Interesting from Geoffrey - he's basically saying England have just four world-class performers. It's hard to disagree.

  22. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

What goes through your mind when you see a ball tossed up like that when you're trying to save the game?

"It's like a natural push-drive. Someone like me would kill it, as they can't win unless they get you out. Runs are meaningless. That's what Cook thinks and why he can bat for so long. He's a kid, he's going to make mistakes and his batting's not disciplined. But the best side won - Michael's been saying England threw it away on the third morning, Andrew's said they have had 17 collapses in 24 Test matches and if you keep doing that, you will keep losing matches. Brutally, we have two top-class bowlers in Anderson and Broad, and two top-class batsmen in Cook and Root. Do we get a level of performance from the rest? No."

  23. Well done, from Swanny

  24. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Alex Haworth: So annoyed with Rashid. I'd have accepted losing his wicket to a good delivery but don't give us all that hope then do that.

Tom Rigler: Great innings by Rashid, so close to being the hero. But surely Ali can't be opening in the next Test and Buttler keeping?

  25. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Rashid has had two Test matches - bowled poorly, then bowled great, played a stupid shot in the first innings and then played splendidly. But he was left with Anderson for six or seven overs - he'd done the hard work, on comes the leg-spinner and he creams it to cover. Do you blame him? Yes, it was a poor shot - but no, because he played splendidly in his second Test. He's an unusual character but he'll get over this, just like he got over his nought for plenty and then got his five wickets."

  26. Post update

    Adil Rashid after being dismissed

How many times will Adil Rashid think about that shot in the next few days? He'll be mortified - but he shouldn't be. I'd go as far to say he picked the leg-spinner better than anyone else in the team.

  27. Email tms@bbc.co.uk

  28. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Stokes had the same fault he had in the first innings - playing the ball away from his body, tentatively poking at it. Somebody should be filming these and telling him his back foot should be further over so there's no gap between bat and body. He's talented, the lad, but it's raw technique that's needed. Broad did great, he got bounced by the quicks but fought his corner and got out to a tremendous yorker which just tailed at the end. No disgrace, it was a crackerjack ball."

"Wonderful game of cricket for the last day of a Test match. It looked like Pakistan would polish England off by mid-afternoon. Four close catchers and a man under the helmet to keep Mark Wood company. Old Crazy Horse isn't for leaving town just yet though. If he does, England's saloon door will be left hanging by a thread.

    Eng 239-7 (partnership 46 from 66 balls)

The sweat glistens on Stuart Broad's arms as he pushes Yasir Shah into the off side and scampers a quick single. That puts Adil Rashid on strike, and the Yorkie right-hander seems to be reading his fellow leggie quite well. Plenty of leaves, let's hope he spots the googly. Drinks.

Since England's coaches told their batsmen to put the drive away against Wahab, the fast bowler has gone wicketless. The moment I write that, however, Adil Rashid chases one outside off stump. It started off very wide and swung even further, so Adil could get nowhere near it. Fortunately.

A young Stuart Broad bowling for Leicestershire in 2006

"I remember going for an indoor net at Leicester and seeing lots of Under-19 records displayed in glass frames. Stuart Broad was a record-breaking junior with the bat, he had the highest first-wicket and second-wicket partnerships.

"Quite a lot of great bowlers weren't overbowled in their teens - having taken up fast bowling later, like Broad did."

  198. Pak 226-7 (target 491)

Stuart Broad is always good when he's on the back foot and taking advantage of his natural stroke-making abilities. He's quick on to a bouncer from Imran Khan, pulling it for four through square leg. The he repeats the dose, this time driving four off the back foot through extra cover. Classy.

  207. Eng 200-7 (Imran 9-3-21-2)

Imran Khan and Wahab Riaz of Pakistan

It's been quite striking how well Pakistan's seamers have bowled in these conditions - Imran Khan has six wickets at 21 in the series and Wahab seven at 34. Imran might secretly be thinking about nipping in with a five-for, but he'd have to get the last three wickets to do so. What will be the team instructions now? England always talk about being positive but will that help Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler in this situation? Surely they will get hammered if they play a rash shot. Just a single from the latest set of six - Stokes getting back and across and guiding the ball behind square.

  277. Vote: England's most important player

  278. Eng 167-5 (Stokes 1, Buttler 4)

Television cameras have picked out Misbah telling Yasir Shah to bowl the googly which got rid of Jonny Bairstow. Excellent planning and execution. Maiden over, this time Jos Buttler surviving against Yasir.

  280. Stokes dropped on 1

    Eng 167-5

Ben Stokes is looking about as comfortable as Annie Lennox walking on broken glass at the moment. He gets another inside edge on to his pad and the catch carries to the short-leg fielder but a difficult opportunity is grassed.

It's turning round corners now - Yasir Shah ragging one across Ben Stokes's body and then bamboozling the left-hander when he tries to get to the pitch of the next ball. Suddenly Jonny Bairstow's technique looks sound and it's Stokes who is the worry. Drinks.

It was all going so well...

And then, Zulfiqar drags Joe Root forward and a tentative prod results in a little edge to a jubilant Younus Khan at first slip. The umpires check that it carried. But it did. And England are wobbling.

  296. Eng 155-3 (78 overs remaining)

Yasir Shah is now round the wicket to Jonny Bairstow with three catchers on the off side and a man under the helmet. The batsman just sticks out his back pad and kicks it away, hiding his bat as he does so. Again, it's another example of clarity from the right-hander. Have Trevor Bayliss and Paul Farbrace been hammering away at him this morning?

  298. Eng 155-3 (Root 70, Bairstow 17)

Batsmen will tell you they don't care about their averages and that it's about the team winning, but they are telling fibs. It's about both. It's like when a football manager tells you they don't read the papers. Trust me - I know from experience that they do. And they pore over every word.

Anyway, the point of this entry is that it's a good opportunity for Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow to swell their stats. So far so good, with another two runs coming off Babar.

Jonny Bairstow is doing OK for now, playing a neat forward defensive to leg-spinner Yasir Shah when required and recognising when the ball is pitching on off and turning away by leaving. When the ball is pitched up, Bairstow punches four through the covers. We've criticised Jonny before now, but he seems to have a clear plan today.

Pakistan introduce Yasir Shah for the first time this morning - Joe Root, in particular, has picked the leg-spinner quite well in this match. Jonny Bairstow is a different kettle of fish mind, and Yasir realises this by coming over the wicket. Solid defence for now though, just one from the over.

  306. Email tms@bbc.co.uk

John Davidson, India: We have too many sloggers in the team for the kind of cricket required today. Only Cook, Bell and Root seem to have the staying power of the attritional batting needed to save the day. Mind you, if we got through to the last hour with only 75 runs needed for victory and a few wickets in hand, sloggers would be what we need. Moeen Ali needs to be back at number eight. I'd give Michael Carberry or Sam Robson another whirl. Hales is another slogger. And James Taylor for Bell... hmmm, what's he like when it's time to knuckle down?

  307. Bairstow dropped on 11

    Eng 146-3 (target 491)

Jonny Bairstow might have been caught at short leg in the last over, and he offers another chance in the same area - this time off the spin of Babar. A little poke into the leg side but the man under the helmet drops a relatively easy chance. Jonny would have caught that if the roles were reversed.

  309. Eng 146-3 (Root 67, Bairstow 11)

Is Paul Farbrace the nicest man in cricket? He always comes across that way - and he talks sense too. The England assistant coach said last night that England's players should be OK against Wahab provided they don't start driving. Solid advice.

The pace is there now, from the left-arm quick who is going round the wicket, and Jonny Bairstow fends off a single into the leg side. It would have been a catch if there was a short-leg in place. Root just continues on his merry way with a gentle push into the on-side which brings him another two runs. Then the bowler pitches it up and Root caresses four through the covers.

  311. Eng 138-3 (target 491)

  313. Eng 138-3 (86 overs remaining)

Wahab is a curious bowler in that it takes him a couple of overs to go through the gears - Jonny Bairstow ducking beneath a bouncer which clocks 81mph. It's perhaps more dangerous for a batsman because they don't know when he's going to find that extra 10mph whereas the likes of Mitchell Johnson don't get out of bed for deliveries less than 89mph. Even their looseners are rapid. Another maiden over.

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"Alastair Cook doesn't normally get muscle injuries, but he's clearly got a niggle - he didn't take part in the football they play as a warm-up, so why not admit it? I'd say a 50% fit Alastair Cook would still play in Sharjah, as he's a damn sight better than what else they've got."

    Joe Root

How many Test runs will Joe Root score? Will he end up with more than Alastair Cook one day? What about the man at the top of the pile - Sachin Tendulkar?

He's a phenomenal talent, and is the second-youngest England batsman to reach 3,000 Test runs. He has, however, done it in 62 innings which is 11 fewer than the man above him on the age list: Cook.

I wonder if Wahab has studied footage of that Mitchell Johnson delivery to Bairstow at Edgbaston when the young Yorkie was caught behind following a searing bouncer? The angles are all in place, as is the pace. Wahab will be touching 90mph within an over or two.

I have realised that if I push myself a little bit more, I can get 10,000 Test runs. I will be in England next summer.
