Colchester United are set to appoint former West Ham and Stoke midfielder Kevin Keen as their new manager.

The 48-year-old sat alongside chairman Robbie Cowling as he watched them lose to Rochdale on Saturday, leaving them bottom of League One.

He will replace Tony Humes, who left the club in November.

"It would be beneficial for all concerned if we get someone in as soon as possible," interim manager Wayne Brown told BBC Essex.

"But that man has to be the right man, a man who can take the club forward," Brown added.

Keen was first-team coach at Liverpool under Kenny Dalglish in 2011-12 and more recently was assistant manager to Steve Clarke at Reading.

"If it takes another week or two to get the right man then I think that's paramount," said Brown, who ruled himself out of taking on the role earlier this week.
