Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog have announced they are no longer in a relationship.

In a statement published online they say they will continue to work together on The Muppets.

They released the same statements on their Twitter accounts explaining they had been "squabbling".

The new series of The Muppets will air this autumn and it will be aimed at an adult audience touching on subjects The Muppets have never talked about.

To quote Miss Piggy, both stars have "moved on" following the split.

In a film released on YouTube, it is revealed that Kermit is now seeing a brunette sow called Denise.

Miss Piggy is in a relationship with the actor Topher Grace.

Newsbeat's entertainment reporter Natalie Jamieson's analysis:

"Of course this is a publicity stunt but I think it's done with the best intentions because people who love The Muppets have followed the relationship of Miss Piggy and Kermit for so long.

"Bearing in mind the context of this is they are Muppets.

"This is a big deal.

"With the new TV show the slight reservation is that they are taking The Muppets out of their traditional family based audience.

"The new series is going out at 8pm in America so this is going to push the boundaries of what they've done before.

"It's going to be edgier. It's going to be tongue in cheek and they'll be talking about relationships.

"The show will be a late-night talk-show and I'm not sure I want them to be discussing certain things.

"It might get a bit raunchy so maybe it is better they split up."
