Kwadwo Boadu: I think Oxlade Chamberlain will be in rather than Nathan Redmond and I would not be surprised if Jon Flanagan will be in rather than Luke Shaw.

Adam Smith: Is it too much of a punt to call Dele Alli into the squad?

Richard Baxter: With all the suggestions being made whatever happens by 2020 it looks like England will have a top squad.

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate on BT Sport: "It was 25 minutes before we started to play with any belief. We were a bit passive in the first 25. It's good we got response we did. They looked a very good side. This is why we wanted these games. That's the standard we're going to face in the summer.

"There's a lot of food for thought in the game. We won't win the U21 European Championship if we play like how we did in the first 25 minutes."

England forward Danny Ings on BT Sport: "Our mentality got us through - in the first 20 minutes, we didn't play our game. We ended the half well, then in the second half we showed great character to come from behind."

England defender Carl Jenkinson on BT Sport: "It's a big win, but we don't get carried away. The big one is in the summer."

Sunderland forward Connor Wickham: Great comeback for England!

"It just shows how good England's team spirit is to come back twice and win - they're definitely together in the dressing room.

"I thought Germany were the better side tonight, but England got the win - if they can do that and go on to win the Euros we'll be happy."

England goalscorer Nathan Redmond on BT Sport: "We've beaten one of the best teams we will possibly face in this summer's U21 European Championship finals. At half time the gaffer let us know that the first half was not good enough. My goal took a bit of a lucky deflection, but I'll take it.

On the spirit of the squad: "When we score, we celebrate together. It showed tonight on the pitch."

What a tremendous victory for England - 2-1 down, outplayed in patches, but come out 3-2 winners.

We are deep into stoppage time.

What a miss! That should have been the fourth. James Ward-Prowse's tame shot from 20 yards bounces up and catches Marc-Andre ter Stegen by surprise. The keeper parries into the path of Danny Ings, whocan only find the Barcelona man's gloves with his follow-up. The Burnley forward should have scored.

More of your 2020 selections, surely James Ward-Prowse is worth a shout?

Steve Reed: Are we writing off Daniel Sturridge to injury or is 31 too old to be an international striker now?

Rich: I would have Aaron Cresswell at left back. Why he's been overlooked for a place in the current England squad is beyond me. One of the signings of this Premier League season without doubt.

Michael Koziol: Surely Butland will surpass Hart by then? What about Hughes? Rooney? I'd go for Nick Powell too. And Ox ahead of Redmond.

Germany desperately look for an equaliser. The ball falls to Serge Gnabry on the edge of the area, but the Arsenal man fires his shot high, wide and not very handsome.

"Great finish by James Ward-Prowse, he just passed that in to the goal. Jenkinson could have gone on his own, but he passed it to Ward-Prowse and what a finish. I've been watching this game and thinking Germany were the best team, but what do I know? Credit where credit is due they've battled to get back in to the game tonight."

Arsenal's Calum Chambers comes on for Reading's James Forster-Caskey. Chambers will sit just in front of the backline. There are four minutes remaining.

"He deserves that Redmond, he's been England's best player by a big way and will be happy with that. It's unbelievable that it's 2-2 now - I don't think we've been up to Germany's standard but we're level."

England bring on Burnley defender Michael Keane for Ben Gibson, while Germany replace Amin Younes with Mainz's Yunus Malli.

Despite Germany having more of the share, England still look dangerous on the break. Norwich's Nathan Redmond, who has been lively fizzes in a low shot that is well saved. Moments later, both Danny Ings and Jesse Lingard have shots blocked from inside the area.

Freiburg's Christian Gunter is a great galloper for Germany down the left. He wins a corner for Germany, but the set-piece comes to nothing.

Now then, was that a pen? James Ward-Prowse appears to body-check Nico Schulz, but the replay suggests it was outside the area. Ref waved play on anyway.

Good period of play from England in the Germany area, but Jesse Lingard fails to control the ball in order to fire in a shot. At the other end, Jonathan Bond easily saves Serge Gnabry's effort.

Schalke's Max Meyer is off and is replaced by Nico Schulz of Hertha Berlin. It's smashing it down at the Riverside Stadium. Very Teesside.

Paul Robinson: How about Brooklyn Beckham?

Oliver Whitehead: Ibe will be a massive part of England's plans. Exciting player to watch. Direct and commits defenders.

Stuart Stalley: Rooney will probably still be going, and surely Welbeck above Redmond?

Dave: Will Hughes must be a serious candidate for the euro 2020 side. Best young English centre midfielder, certainly outside the prem, by a country mile and the ability to make a side tick. Not a type of player we have in abundance.

Derby midfielder Will Hughes is coming off and Alex Pritchard, who is at Brentford but is a Tottenham player, comes on. He moves to the left side of midfield.

Danny Ings is England biggest threat. He cruises down the right then plays a ball back to Jesse Lingard on the edge of the area - the Derby player, on loan from Manchester United, attempts a sidefoot shot, but it is easily blocked.

Fans sitting inside the Riverside Stadium are waving lights around - the new Mexican Wave? Have I missed something?

Germany are pressing high up the pitch. They are chiefing this second half at the moment.

"Hofmann is lethal - he's had two chances and two goals. This is a very good Germany side and they've found too much space. They had too much space all over the pitch there for that second goal."

Hofmann finds the net again with a bullet of a left foot finish from 20 yards. But he fires in a long time after the referee's whistle following another jinking run from the diminutive Amin Younes.

Hofmann will be worth a bit in the future.

Back at the other end, England counter, but Danny Ings's shot from 20 yards clears Marc-Andre ter Stegen's crossbar by two feet.

England have begun well. Carl Jenkinson tries to release Nathan Redmond down the right, but Freiburg's Christian Gunter cuts the out the ball.

Midfielder Joshua Kimmich - bound for Bayern Munich - and Arsenal midfielder/forward Serge Gnabry are on for Germany.

"I thought for the first 20 minutes Germany really dominated, we came in to the game after that and the goal from Jesse Lingard got us back in to it. Without a doubt Germany are on top and dominating, hopefully England can come in to the game more in the second half and start penetrating the goal.

"Gareth Southgate will be looking for his players to push higher and be braver on the ball as Germany are dictating things at the minute."

I disagree with Woodgate - I thought England won that first half on points

So 1-1 at the break. A half of two halves. Germany were on top in the opening few moments and took the lead through Philipp Hofmann, but England kept their composure and hit back through Jesse Lingard. In fact, the home side have created more clear-cut chances.

"England are starting to play better and starting to come in to the game more, they're playing with more intensity and if they can cut out the loose passes they'll be on their way."

The corner comes to nothing, but it is England finishing the half on the front foot.

England win a corner, as Carl Jenkinson's delivery is blocked.

There are five minutes until half-time. England have impressed so far against a very good young Germany side.

Cripes! It's picked up a bit at the Riverside Stadium.

Germany win a free-kick and Liverpool's Emre Can fires in a peach of a strike that is pushed away by Jonathan Bond. Amin Younes fires wide with his angled "I'm going to take everybody out" follow-up.

Two great chances for England.

Nathan Redmond picks up the ball in midfield and finds Danny Ings. The Burnley man performs a couple of stepovers but his brilliant low shot is well saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The Barcelona keeper is then called in to action again to keep out Ben Gibson's stooping header and Jesse Lingard's follow-up.

Pressure building.

Germany are doing a great job at closing down England's midfield. Everton full-back Luke Garbutt finds a bit of space down the left but he is put under pressure and his cross drifts out of play.

It has been a steady start to the match by both sides (euphemism for 'not a lot has happened') in what appears to be a drizzly night at the Riverside Stadium - any fans watching the match give me a weather forecast.

"We have to retain the ball better from the back there, we can't just keep hitting it forward in hope. You look at how Germany are holding the ball and playing it out from the back, that's a totally different game from what you usually see from us.

"This is how international football is played and we're struggling to get the ball as a result at the moment."

England are set up with current Derby player Jesse Lingard on the left of Danny Ings in attack and Norwich's Nathan Redmond on the right. They have yet to test the full-backs.

Germany are playing in red and black hooped shirts and black shorts, as you do, while England are in all white - some of the players are wearing white boots. Dazzling.

"Germany are good in possession, they're well organised and they like to play out from the back. But we focus on what we do well and other teams are looking at us and the way that we play. We're growing in confidence and we're starting to build a reputation."

What you have might also noticed is that England U21 coach Gareth Southgate is back at his old haunt.

Southgate spent three years as manager of Boro and five years as a player, when the former defender helped the side win the League Cup and finish as runners-up in the 2006 Uefa Cup.

"It's been nice to see some familiar faces coming here but I've been back quite a few times before to see people like Aitor Karanka [current manager] and Dave Parnaby [youth coach].

"Everybody makes me really welcome, which is great, but the game is about making sure the team perform on the night."

So Danny Ings starts in attack. Norwich's Nathan Redmond - of predicted future England Euro 2020 squad fame (see earlier entry) - will support him.

West Ham's on-loan defender Carl Jenkinson and Everton's John Stones return to the backline, while Derby's Will Hughes and Jesse Lingard (on loan from Manchester United) take their places in midfield.

Coach Gareth Southgate has gone with Watford's Jonathan Bond in goal in place of Fulham's Marcus Bettinelli.

So can this current Germany Under-21 squad emulate the one that beat England 4-0 to win the 2009 Euros? Some of that squad went on to lift the World Cup five years later - as you can see.

"The quality and the level of experience on the international stage we have in this squad are impressive," said Germany U21 coach Horst Hrubesch recently.

"I want to give every player another chance to put himself forward and make the decision for us coaches as difficult as possible."

Germany did not fare too well at the last Euros in Germany because Andre Schurrle, Julian Draxler and Marc-Andre ter Stegen joined the senior team, while Toni Kroos and Mario Gotze were injured.

Hrubesch says this young Germany group are much stronger - let's see if they are.

Enough fun. Let's get serious.

Gareth Southgate's young side arrive into this match on the back of a 1-0 win over Czech Republic, having recently enjoyed an 11-GAME WINNING RUN.

Today they are without key personnel such as Eric Dier, Jack Butland, Nathaniel Chalobah and forwards Saido Berahino and Patrick Bamford, so it is a big ask for them to get back-to-back wins.

"We're freshening the side up from the other night and I think it's important that everyone starts a game and we still look a strong team so I'm looking forward to seeing us play," he revealed.

"They have belief in the way they work and their ability. We've picked some matches both this month and last November to test them and stretch us in different ways, so it's not just about the result."

To Under 21 or not to Under 21, that is the question.

This issue is more than than just club v country, it's club v country v what level for your country.

England Under 21s face their German counterparts at 19:45 BST, without Liverpool's Raheem Sterling (20), Everton's Ross Barkley (21) and Tottenham's Harry Kane (21) - all three are in the current senior squad.

Their berths in the squad for this summer's U21 European Championship in the Czech Republic have not been confirmed - with reasons for their possible absence ranging from club tour commitments to permanent graduation to the senior squad.

So with the likes of Nathan Redmond, Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse in the squad, is this England U21 squad good enough to become European champions this summer?

We will get a good measure of their chances against the much-fancied Germans at the Riverside.
