Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes new signing Christian Benteke can be a huge player for the club after the striker earlier this week.

"There's a number of qualities that he has and he will only improve in his time at the club," said Rodgers. "If you look at his goals record since the time that he's been in the Premier League he's up there with the best in terms of numbers. So that was very important for us.

"Obviously I've heard and I've seen stuff about the style, 'he won't fit the style of how we play' - I think he'll only complement it and help us. He's a big guy but he's got the attributes that I like in terms of pace and movement and he gets goals.

"He's great in the air, strong, he can hold the game up, he can play on the counter-attack, he can play whenever the team is deep because he can hold the ball up with his physical strength."

Leeds Rhinos have signed Wests Tigers prop Keith Galloway on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old Australia international will join the Rhinos for the start of next season after being released from the final year of his contract with the NRL side.

Rhinos coach Brian McDermott told BBC Radio Leeds: "He's a tough, uncompromising prop who gives you plenty of game time."

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have signed Leeds Rhinos prop Andy Yates on an 18-month deal.

The 25-year-old is the fourth signing the Wildcats have made this week after Lee Smith, Bill Tupou and Scott Moore.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton has defended his club following their pursuit of Hibernian midfielder Scott Allan days before the teams meet in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup on Saturday.

Rangers made a slightly improved offer for Allan on Thursday, hours after Hibs confirmed they had rejected a £175,000 bid for the player.

"My job is in the football department, out there on the grass, managing the players and the group of staff around the players, and working with the academy," said Warburton.

"I'm paid to do that job. The other work, the more difficult stuff, is handled by the powers that be. We have to look after Rangers Football Club in everything we do. That selfish approach for any successful business, let alone football, is looking after number one so to speak."

IAAF presidential candidate Seb Coe has promised an Olympic athletics dividend to all of the IAAF's 214 member federations if he is elected president in next month's election.

The dividend would be funded through approximately half of the quadrennial fee received from the International Olympic Committee [IOC] and would help help fund athletics development at grassroots level.

It would give each federation at least $100,000 (£64,400) over a four-year cycle, totalling around $22m (£14m)

American amputee sprinter Richard Browne has warmed up for his showdown with Britain's Paralympic champion Jonnie Peacock in Sunday's IPC Grand Prix final at the Olympic Stadium with an unofficial T44 100m world record.

Browne, who is the current single-leg amputee record holder with 10.75 seconds set at the 2013 Anniversary Games, clocked 10.72 in the 100m heats in an event Finland on Thursday. He also ran a wind-assisted 10.60 in the final.

It sets up the prospect of a thrilling encounter between the pair on Sunday in London and you can hear all the action on 5 Live.

Bath head coach Mike Ford says he understands why England plan to play rugby league convert Sam Burgess at centre, but has also stressed that he will remain as a blindside flanker at club level.

Former England scrum-half Matt Dawson said earlier this week that Burgess, 26, had been "found out" playing at centre for Bath in the Premiership last season and jad been "a real threat" in the forward pack.

Ford told BBC Radio Bristol: "I know ultimately he'll come back a better player with his experience at the World Cup, so I'm pretty chilled about it. It doesn't concern me at all. Wherever he plays, he'll contribute to the England team."

Crystal Palace are in free-scoring form in their pre-season friendly in Cape Town, South Africa, where they lead SuperSport United 4-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Mile Jedinak, Chung-yong Lee, Jordon Mutch and Frazier Campbell.

Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez is confident captain Sergio Ramos and striker Karim Benzema will remain at Real Madrid, despite reports linking the pair with English clubs.

"Sergio has known from day one that I want him to stay and I'm sure that he'll stay with us," said Benitez after Friday's win over Manchester City in the International Champions Cup in Melbourne.

"People are asking me about different players that maybe we will buy and I always say the same thing, 'he's not our player, I will not talk about that'.

"In this case Karim is our player so I will not talk about that. I hope, I'm sure, that he will stay with us."

Russian five-times grand slam champion Maria Sharapova has split up with Bulgarian boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov after a relationship which lasted nearly three years.

"Our paths split," 24-year-old Dimitrov, who has fallen to 16th in the world after reaching eighth last year and reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals, told Bulgarian media.

"We experienced wonderful moments together. I wish her much happiness and success in life and in tennis.

"Now I'm concentrated entirely on the game and I'm sure the results will soon be seen. This is the summer of the new beginning for me."

Russia 2018 chief Sorokin was speaking ahead of Saturday's World Cup draw, which is Blatter's first overseas trip since Fifa was plunged into turmoil by criminal investigations into allegations of systematic bribery.

"He has always been a friend of our country," he added.

"We respect his decision. We are certain everything he's doing is for the good of Fifa to which he has dedicated his life."

Fifa president Sepp Blatter is "a victim", according to the man in charge of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Blatter is standing down in February as a result of a corruption crisis at world football's governing body.

But Russia 2018 chief executive Alexei Sorokin told the BBC that the 79-year-old Swiss was "a very brave person".

"Unfortunately he decided to take up responsibility himself for certain things which are not within his responsibility," he said.

Leyton Orient captain Nathan Clarke has left the League Two club in order to move north and be closer to his family.

The 31-year-old centre-back made 131 appearances for the O's after moving to east London from Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2012.

"While playing here I have been away from my young family. I feel living apart has become too hard," he told the club website.

"I have on many occasions put the club before my family's happiness and that should never happen."

Jose Mourinho says he has no regrets about selling Manchester City target Kevin de Bruyne, insisting the winger lacked the necessary mentality to succeed at Chelsea.

Mourinho sold the 24-year-old Belgian to Wolfsburg in a deal worth £18m in January 2014 but he has been linked with a return to the Premier League for a fee in the region of £50m.

"He needed a team where he knows he can play every game. He needs to know that he is important," said Mourinho.

"He did not want a team where he thinks, 'am I playing or not?'. He needs that trust, he needs that quality. He needs that security. So I was not happy when he left."

League One side Gillingham have signed Cardiff City defender Deji Oshilaja on loan until 3 January.

The 22-year-old has made three senior appearances for the Bluebirds and has had loan spells at Newport County, Sheffield Wednesday and AFC Wimbledon.

Nibali finished clear of Colombia's Nairo Quintana with overall leader Chris Froome third.

Chelsea captain John Terry believes manager Jose Mourinho's decision to sign a new contract at the club is a huge blow to their rivals.

Mourinho has confirmed that a new four-year deal has been agreed and it is only a matter of time before it is made official.

"It's great news for the club but terrible news for everybody else because the other managers know that he finds ways to beat teams," Terry told the London Evening Standard.

"He knows people inside out, on and off the pitch. Whether you're a player or manager, he does his groundwork. He knows everything."

That was the complicated bit. These are the basic bits you may actually care about.

Games will be played from September 2016 to October 2017.

The nine group winners will progress to the finals, while the eight best runners-up will take part in play-offs in November 2017.

The Fifa confederations of Africa, Oceania, South America and Concacaf (North, Central America and the Caribbean) will also be involved.

Stage 19 of the Tour De France is starting to build to a climax but there is still the minor matter of a mountain in the Alps facing Yellow Jersey holder Chris Froome.

Russia have already qualified as hosts, and the other 52 member nations have been split into six pots based on Fifa's July rankings.

The nine top seeds in Europe - including Wales and England - will first be drawn into a group. (For TV rights purposes, England, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands will be drawn into groups of six teams, as will Italy and France from pot two).

A team from each of the other four or five pots will then be drawn into each group to make up the nine groups.

If you were thinking of going to Somerset's T20 Blast match against Middlesex at Taunton on Friday evening, then don't.

The game, which was due to start at 17:30 BST, has been postponed because of rain.

Neither team could have qualified for the quarter-finals, but the names of the five teams to join Birmingham Bears, Worcestershire and Kent in the last eight will be decided later on.

The 2018 World Cup draw takes place on Saturday where the home nations will find out who they need to beat in order to reach the finals in Russia.

The draw is expected to take place in St Petersburg at 16:00 BST.

According to his manager, Chris Ramsey, Charlie Austin is probably on his way out of QPR this summer. He has been linked with moves to Newcastle, Leicester, West Ham and Crystal Palace and Ramsey admits "It's unlikely he'll stay".

He told talkSPORT: "We have to be realistic. We want to keep him but it's unlikely. The club is in a financial position that it needs to recoup some money and I think for his ambitions he wants to keep playing in the Premier League to go to the Euros".

Rangers have already turned down big-money bids and are holding out for more than £15m for the 26-year-old striker.

Scott Carson has told BBC Radio Derby he's desperate to get back to the Premier League - and maybe the England squad.

Carson, who joined Derby County this summer, is currently in Holland for the Rams pre-season tour.

"I'm only 29 and I feel that I still have a lot to offer," he said. "I want to get back to the Premier League.

BBC Radio Stoke understands that Bojan Krkic could make his first appearance for Stoke City since January in Saturday's pre-season friendly at Brentford.

The former Barcelona striker missed the second half of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

"He may play a part in that," assistant manager Mark Bowen said. "And it'll be great to have him back. He's way ahead of schedule and you're desperate to get him back, but you have to be mindful of what he's been through."

Brentford have signed Denmark international Lasse Vibe from IFK Goteborg for an undisclosed fee.

The forward, 28, has agreed a three-year deal at Griffin Park and becomes the Championship club's eighth signing of the summer.

He made his international debut for Denmark in 2014 and has won a total of nine caps.

The Lancashire Telegraph are reporting that Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes is "unhappy" that he has been refused permission to speak to Middlesbrough.

The two Championship clubs have held talks this week over a £12m deal, but Blackburn's owners are not keen to sell to a rival.

Concerns are rising over the likely participation of unbeaten Epsom Derby and Eclipse Stakes winner Golden Horn in flat racing's King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Saturday following heavy rain on the track.

Trainer John Gosden has indicated that he will walk the course ahead of the race to check ground conditions are not too soft before committing the Frankie Dettori-ridden colt to the line-up.

Guernsey FC have signed a former Atletico Madrid youth player after he moved to the island to work in a hotel.

Guille Fernandez, 26, played for the Spanish giants from under-12 to under-19 level and has also played in Spain's fourth division.

He initially came to the island with the Real Madrid soccer school last year when he met with the Isthmian League Division One South club's coaches.

The island side gets average gates of almost 800, some of the highest in the eighth tier of English football - but 46,000 less than the average attendance at Atletico's Vicente Calderon.

Cummins had New Zealand's Hamish Rutherford caught behind by Nevill for 14.

The player's family have failed to settle in Manchester after an attempted burglary, and the Argentine's form slumped in the second half of the campaign, with just one FA Cup goal against Yeovil after October.

Never will Manuel Pellegrini be more relaxed about a 4-1 defeat. He looks at ease on his bench. This is a patchwork City side, knitted together with very loose cotton, falling apart as a result under any real strong rip from Real.

Can we read much into it domestically? City certainly don't look too sharp but they may well be in the middle of a big block of training. It's miles in the legs for these players if nothing else.

What are City getting from this? As far as friendless go, it's competitive and a good workout physically. This type of contest has to be more worthwhile than the old school away trip to lower-league cannon fodder.

Rain has washed out the fourth day's play in the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa in Chittagong.

South Africa, who made 248 in the first innings, bowled out Bangladesh for 326 and reached 61-0 in their second innings when bad light forced an early stumps on Thursday with 24.5 overs left to be bowled.

Openers Stiaan van Zyl and Dean Elgar were on 33 and 28 runs respectively, as Bangladesh's first innings lead slipped to 17.

The second and final Test of two-match series will be held in Dhaka from 30 July to 3 August.

The scoreline is perhaps a bit harsh on Manchester City, who could well have been given an early penalty when Yaya Toure was smashed by Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas. The keeper was just too late to a bounce and clattered the Ivorian - think Harald Schumacher on Patrick Battiston at the 1982 World Cup.

I'm surprised Toure was able to get up but he's hard at work and dummies to create space but elects to keep running rather than shoot and gets squeezed out in the area.

Sterling watch: A quiet half an hour after that one mazy run.

Oddly, as Melbourne is nowhere near Merseyside, each Raheem Sterling touch of the ball is being booed. As the City forward gets beaten for strength by Sergio Ramos, a cheer rings out around this famous cricket ground.

Former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby is being examined by West Brom's medical officers on Friday with a view to signing a pay-as-you-play deal.

A Gareth Bale cross is there to be cleared, it's got no real pace on it but the French striker gets a good body position and hooks a volley over his shoulder from 18 yards into the net.

Fabian Delph is off the field of play. His debut lasted a shade under 20 minutes and Jesus Navas is on in his place, so a tweak to how City are set up will be needed.

Delph wildly hacks at Modric but moments later has needed to call for treatment himself and it does not look good.

Academy player Cameron Humphreys was named as one of those who has impressed City boss Manuel Pellegrini on his side's tour of Australia.

In the early stages this game is competitive and City are using Raheem Sterling as a centre forward.

He gets into the box after a great first touch and driving run, PENALTY APPEAL, waved away. Sterling perhaps went down a bit easy but his speed of foot was exciting and got Los Blancos on the back foot. Some great jinking and weaving from the England international.

As we told you a short while ago (09:21 BST) Rotherham's Kirk Broadfoot will serve a 10-match ban after being charged by the FA with using "abusive and/or insulting" words towards the then Wigan player James McClean.

The former Rangers defender was also fined £7,500 and ordered to complete an education programme.

The Mirror are reporting that the incident involved a "sectarian tirade" against Republic of Ireland international McClean, who has since signed for West Brom.

Bernard Tomic, who seems to be attracting a lot of negative press recently - he was dropped from Australia's Davis Cup team and arrested in Miami - does not intend to accept the offer of "clear the air" talks with Tennis Australia until his sister Sara's funding is reinstated.

The 22-year-old, Australia's highest-ranked men's player said he did not believe there was any point in a meeting "until I am satisfied TA is committed to funding the development of junior Australian talent, including my sister Sara, on a non-discriminatory basis".

Australian golfer Robert Allenby has lost a caddie mid-way through a round for the third time. Which just sounds careless.

The confrontation occurred on the par-five 13th when, on the advice of compatriot Mick Meddlemo, Allenby hit an eight iron into the green but found a creek and eventually made a triple-bogey. "He just lost the plot at me." Allenby said.

Meddlemo had a different version of events. "We had a discussion about a club. I was called a fat so-and-so. I got a little bit peeved by it."

A little earlier, Sergio Perez walked away unhurt after a very dramatic crash where his Force India ended up on it's "roof".

West Brom majority shareholder Jeremy Peace has ended the period of exclusivity granted to a Chinese consortium because he's not satisfied at the progress of negotiations.

I understand the deal was almost there but Peace felt in the best interests of the club he should stand back.

There are other interested parties but it would take several months now to get close to a deal and Peace feels a period of stability is now necessary and he is happy to continue at the helm.

Friday's edition of Spanish newspaper Marca features Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos and claims Manchester United have asked him to publicly declare he wants to leave the Bernabeu in order to force a move away.

The 29-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, with initial rumours suggesting he would form part of a deal involving United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Marca reports that Ramos has refused the request by United, and is awaiting a meeting with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to decide his future ahead of the new season.

As we've already mentioned, Ramos has been named in the Real Madrid side for the friendly against Manchester City, which starts at 11:00 BST in Melbourne.

Williams could replace Valtteri Bottas with former world champion Jenson Button should the Finn sign for Ferrari next season.

Bottas, on whom Williams have a contractual hold, is Ferrari's number one option should they decide not to retain Kimi Raikkonen alongside Sebastian Vettel.

Sources close to the deal say Ferrari and Williams have discussed Bottas's transfer but have no agreement yet.

Was it really only Monday that "UK prankster" Simon Brodkinthrew a pile of banknotes Fifa president Sepp Blatter? Well, Brodkin - whose stage name is Lee Nelson - has been talking about the incident...

West Brom owner Jeremy Peace says the club has suspended takeover talks with an unnamed party.

"I entered into an exclusivity arrangement in good faith after agreeing terms for the sale," said Peace in a statement on the club website. "But it is now clear to me that this potential purchaser is unable to fulfil the terms of that agreement at this time."

Liverpool Ladies and England midfielder Fara Williams has been ruled out of action for a couple of months with a hamstring injury.

The 31-year-old picked up the injury during last weekend's defeat to Notts County.

Manager Matt Beard told the BBC that defender Satara Murray also has a hamstring injury, while Nigeria World Cup star Asisat Oshoala has a knee problem which will sideline them for a similar period of time.

The United States has asked Paraguay to extradite Nicolas Leoz, the former president of South America's football confederation, Conmebol.

Mr Leoz is one of the main suspects in a huge bribery and money-laundering scandal being investigated by the US Justice Department.

The former member of Fifa's executive committee, who maintains his innocence, is being held under house arrest in the Paraguayan capital, Asuncion.

At the heart of the US investigation is the sale of football marketing and TV rights and what was done with the revenues.

Stripping Russia of the World Cup would cause a "blast" that could exacerbate the Ukraine crisis, a former ambassador to the 2018 hosts has warned.

A pretty shocking claim from the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) director general David Howman on Friday. He has suggested that one in ten elite athletes could be using performance-enhancing drugs.

But he warns that the number of children doping to reach the elite level is Wada's "biggest concern".

Howman has said sport's increasing profitability had led to young athletes becoming more "vulnerable".

It has been suggested that Zenit coach Andre Villas Boas refused permission for Hulk to be involved, given that the player is needed for a game on Sunday a three hour-flight from St Petersburg.

Bad news coming from the south coast... Southampton defender Florin Gardos is set to miss the next "six to seven months" with a knee injury.

The club have not disclosed any information about how he sustained the injury but, with Toby Alderweireld's departure to Spurs, it means boss Ronald Koeman is now looking for a new centre-back.

"With a difficult climb straight from the off, whoever has the yellow jersey will not only have to watch out for the top-five riders but those just outside.

"There is always somebody in the top seven or eight who can still be pretty dangerous on a stage like this, even if they are four or five minutes down. It's only 138km long, so it's not a huge day in the mountains and you can ride hard. I think it will be full-gas racing from start to finish.

We are expecting a sombre mood at this morning's Hungarian Grand Prix practice session after the death of French driver Jules Bianchi.

A number of drivers including world champion Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa have said that nothing will change on the track and the drivers will not lose focus on Sunday.
