  3. Two hundred turn out in protest against silica extraction

    A packed meeting in Dersingham last night saw 200 people gather in protest over plans to allow quarrying for silica sand next to the village.

    Norfolk County Council is short of its target for silica sand, which is needed for glass-making and other industries. 

    West Norfolk is one of the few areas of England which produces silica sand. 

    But residents in Dersingham, Ingoldisthorpe and Snettisham are unhappy to find that more than 300 hectares (741 acres) of land nearby has been earmarked for quarrying.

  4. First peregrine falcon chick fledges

    The first of this year's peregrine falcon chicks at Norwich Cathedral has fledged. The female bird was spotted this morning on a roof about 12ft (4m) off the ground.

    The Hawk and Owl Trust says it hopes No 43 - as the chick is known - will return back to the nest but at the moment she's flying around the cathedral. The three other chicks are expected to fledge imminently. 

  5. BreakingTwo people and a dog found dead on boat in Broads

    Two people and a dog have been found dead on a boat moored on Wroxham Broad.

    Officers were called to the boat at 16:00 this afternoon. 

    The deaths are being treated as unexplained. 

    Police say they were called following concerns for the occupants' safety due to the length of time the vessel had been moored at that location.

  7. Travel guide: 'Don't underestimate challenge' of Vietnam's highest peak

    The independent travel guide Lonely Planet offers advice to travellers contemplating trekking to Vietnam’s highest peak.

    It says Fansipan is "accessible year-round to sensibly equipped trekkers in good shape, but don’t underestimate the challenge".

    It adds: "It is very wet, and can be perilously slippery and generally cold... Don’t attempt an ascent if Sapa’s weather is poor, as limited visibility on Fansipan can be treacherous... No ropes or technical climbing skills are needed, just endurance."

  8. Aiden Webb: 'I'm a very safe climber and I know my limits'

    In a post on Aiden Webb's Facebook profile, he said he had recently been "soloing" - rock climbing without a rope.

    On 28 May, he wrote: "So today, I completed my first official free soloing rock climbs.

    "Never had so much fun and never had my mind so clear and empty. Definitely no 'El Capitan', but regardless. This is something I've felt I've needed to do in a long time."

    He said locals watching his climb called him "both crazy and spiderman", adding: "(Apologies in advance to all family members who think I'm loco, and reckless I'm actually a very safe climber and know my limits)."

  9. Norwich City midfielder Gary O'Neil signs for Bristol City

    Bristol City have signed midfielder Gary O'Neil on a free transfer from recently-relegated Norwich City.

    The 33-year-old, who made 27 Premier League appearances for the Canaries in 2015-16, has signed a two-year deal.

    "Gary is a really good signing for us, who adds everything we need to our midfield," head coach Lee Johnson said.

    "He may have just turned 33, but he's still fully mobile and very fit. He's a really good decision-maker who can be a coach's eyes and ears on the pitch."

  10. New teeth and glasses for lottery winner

    A woman who won £1m on a lottery says she plans to get some new teeth and glasses plus a doctor's certificate so that she can do a wing walk to celebrate her 70th birthday.

    Diana De Gilio bought her winning EuroMillions ticket in a supermarket in King's Lynn, where she's been staying with her friend, Sandy Marsden (pictured right).

    The retired carer has been living in a motor home in New Zealand for the past 12 years because she loves travelling. She met Sandy on a holiday in China and they've been firm friends ever since. 

    As well as teeth implants, she's planning on buying a house and a car. 

  11. Globe-trotting great-grandmother wins £1m

    A globe-trotting great-grandmother has won a 70th birthday present to remember - £1m and a luxurious trip to Bali and Lombok, in the EuroMillions lottery.

    Diana De Gilio70, a retired carer, is originally from New Zealand was in the UK to celebrate her 70th birthday with friends and family when she we discovered her life changing win.

    She bought the lucky ticket while was staying with her close friend Sandy Marsden near King's Lynn and had been planning to wing-walk to mark her 70th birthday:

  12. Aiden Webb's body to be retrieved from ravine tomorrow

    The body of 22-year-old Aiden Webb was spotted by rescue teams at the bottom of a deep valley near Fansipan, Vietnam's highest mountain in the tourist hotspot of Sapa, according to district communist party chief Nguyen Trong Hai.

    "Our rescue workers confirmed the body is the British man. We will try our best and hope to be able to bring his body up early Friday morning," Hai added, explaining that the area is difficult to reach. 

    Vietnamese authorities launched a search operation after Webb went missing last week, combing dense mountainous jungles for any clues. 

  13. Death on mountain comes 15 years after school trip tragedy

    This is Fansipan mountain where Aiden Webb's body was found this morning. 

    Fifteen years ago, 17-year-old schoolgirl Amy Ransom, from Bryants Bottom, near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, died after falling 500m (1,640ft) when she slipped off a path on the same mountain

    She was part of a school party, accompanied by two Vietnamese guides, and had been trekking up the mountain near the village of Sa Pa when the tragedy happened.

  14. Shocked supporters send love to Aiden Webb's family

    Aiden Webb's girlfriend Bluebell Baughan had used Facebook to rally support after he first went missing.

    Now friends and supporters are using the social media site to send their condolences to his family.

    Maria Jose Sanchez-Higgins posted: "So sad to hear this outcome. My heart goes with the family" while James Machin said: "Heartbreaking news, sending love to his friends and family."

  15. Great Yarmouth racecourse back with a bang

    A second day of racing at Great Yarmouth gets under way in 10 minutes' time.

    The course is "perfect" for young horses, according to Hingham-based trainer Christine Dunnett. 

    Racing returned to the track for the first time in nine months yesterday, following improvements since September. The day was hailed as a success by jockeys, trainers and punters.

  17. Climber had 'got lost' on another Vietnamese mountain

    Aiden Webb had previously got lost when hiking on another mountain in Vietnam, according to this post from his Facebook page on 21 May.

    He wrote: "Just trekked Liang Biang mountain. (2169m in ft 7116 feet) Highest mountain in Da Lat in two hours thirty. Not bad considering I didn't use any of the routes recommend.. (Not on purpose I got lost in the forest/jungle) and had to improvise my way up.

    "Luckily i came to a dry(ish) stream full of boulders, which I scrambled for over an hour while ascending up the mountain.. All in preparation for the highest mountain in Indochina, Fansipan."

    Earlier today, rescue teams found Mr Webb's body at the bottom of a deep valley near Fansipan, six days after he was last seen.

  18. Foreign Office statement on Aiden Webb

    The Foreign Office has just issued the following statement: “Vietnamese authorities have this morning confirmed they have found a body in the same area that British national Aiden Webb went missing.

    "A formal identification of the body has not yet been conducted. Our staff have been supporting Mr Webb’s family and friends since he went missing and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

  19. 'Awesome guy with talent to match': University friend's tribute to Aiden Webb

    Alistair Dutton, a university friend of Aiden Webb, has posted on Facebook: "Heart broken by this. 

    "He was an awesome guy with the talent to match and more importantly he was just so friendly and easy to talk to. 

    "My deepest condolences go to his family and to those who knew him even better than I did. Everything you have given us with who you are thank you now and forever from the bottom of my heart."
