Pair jailed over 'barbaric' deer death

Two men who tortured a deer while the act was filmed on a mobile phone have been jailed.

Magistrates at Caernarfon, Gwynedd, gave Toby Humphreys, 22, and Jac Parry Roberts, 19, eight-week sentences.

Humphreys was accused of holding down the roe deer and strangling it, while Roberts is seen punching the animal in the face.

The pair, both of Pensyflog, Porthmadog, pleaded guilty to killing the deer.

Magistrates heard that at least three other people were involved in the "horrific" attack - with one person holding a lamp, and others filming.

'Disturbing'

Humphreys finally stood on the deer's neck and Roberts was accused of killing the animal by cutting its throat.

The court was told that the attack came to light after police recovered a mobile phone during a house search in December.

The incident happened in August.

Magistrates' chairman Peter Lunt-Williams described the offence as "barbaric".

Speaking after the case, Sgt Rob Taylor, from North Wales Police's rural crime team, described the incident as "disturbing".

"We will continue to proactively pursue those who engage in this behaviour," said Sgt Taylor.
