Budding architects claim pavilion prize

For the past 15 years the Serpentine's temporary pavilion has become a highly anticipated fixture in the architecture calendar and has intrigued and surprised visitors to Hyde Park in London.

In 2015 the art gallery wanted to encourage and inspire a new generation of architects so it asked 8-14-year-olds to design their own pavilion.

Entries were divided into two categories and the winners of these have been announced as 10-year-old Jasmine in the 8-10 years and Nahida, 13, in the 11-14 years category.

Jasmine and Nahida's winning designs

Jasmine's design was inspired by spiders' webs and includes mirrored ramps that visitors could walk up. She wanted visitors to decide what the shapes mean.

Runner up Amy, 10, created a 'Readax' pavilion for reading and relaxing, with words printed on the structure

Nahida based her pavilion on the idea of a scrunched-up piece of paper with vibrant transparent colour incorporated into every crease. She intended for the pavilion to be a big studio for people to rent out or to use for school workshops.

Through a website and workshops across the UK, young people were invited to learn about the architectural process from practising architects before submitting their own design.

Like with any build, there was a specific brief to follow and a toolkit that encouraged sketching by hand, working with simple modelling materials and progressing to 3D design and print technologies.

Runner up Peter, 10, designed a this double-sided curvy staircase which was inspired by the De la warr pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea
Ten-year-old Aaron's pavilion was inspired by fire and shaped like a giant flame
Thirteen-year-old runner up Diego's elegant and modern design focused on aesthetic harmony

Runners-up were also selected for each category. There were over 600 entries to the competition which was judged by the Serpentine Directors, Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist, the designers of the 2015 pavilion selgascano, Chairman of Intelligent Engineering UK David Glover and Dejan Mitrovic, founder of Kidesign and designer of the Build Your Own Pavilion workshops.

Serpentine Directors Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist said: "We were overwhelmed by the volume and sophistication of the pavilions submitted both through the workshops and online.

We are delighted that so many young people took up the challenge of designing their own pavilions and thinking about how they might be used. We will be looking out for these rising stars in architecture over the coming years."

The project will return for its second year in the summer of 2016.
