Sports Bras; Long-distance running

Today, on Shakespeare’s birthday, the next in our series on parent-child relationships in his plays.  Reporter Judi Herman investigates fathers and daughters who are separated, but later reconcile. As Northern Broadsides Theatre Company tours the UK with Jonathan Miller’s production of King Lear, we look especially at the relationship of Lear with his youngest daughter, Cordelia; and with As You Like It opening next month at Shakespeare’s Globe, the happier relationship of its heroine, Rosalind, with her father, Duke Senior.

The London Marathon is on  Sunday and recent research reveals a huge boom in mass participation running  with a  12% increase in women taking part in marathons in the UK. We explore some of the lesser known drawbacks of running long distances, as well as the benefits. Alex Heminsley enthusiastic runner and author of ‘Running like a Girl’ and sports scientist Dr Hannah Moir of The Kingston University discuss the highs and lows.

The first sports bra was first invented in 1977. Nearly 40 years on, sports bras can be found almost anywhere, designed to suit different women and sports. But have they lost their original purpose, and become nothing more than a fashion item? Jada Sezer is a plus size model who finds living in sports bras the most comfortable choice for her. Charly is the director of ‘Boobydoo,’ an online company that specialises in sports bras. They join Jenni to discuss what sports bras mean in 2015, and the controversy around plus size modelling.

Professor Dame Carol Robinson has just been awarded the European Laureate award making her the fifth British scientist to have won the award in the last 17 years.  She left school at 16, then studied part time while working.  Following an eight year career break to raise her three children she returned to academia becoming the first female professor of chemistry at both Oxford, and then Cambridge university. Jenni talks to her about her career path, her research and why she wants to inspire more women to become scientists.
