Woman with alopecia: 'I've been heckled in the street'

A woman who began to lose her hair at 16 says she has been "heckled in the street" because she does not look "normal".

Denise Hayes, originally from Canada, claimed that restaurants had not hired her as a waitress because she did not have "the look" required for the role and was forced to become a chef because "it didn't matter" what she looked like.

She also added people "don't really want to know" how she feels about her hair loss saying, "they just want to fix it so that you are their idea of 'normal'".

Alopecia UK say there is still work to do to get rid of the stigma attached to hair loss, which affects around eight million women in the UK.
