  4. West Yorkshire in pictures: Briggate 1957

There are some who'll tell you that consumerism is a modern day phenomenon.

Think again: this is a picture from the Leeds Back in the Day Facebook page, of Briggate on a Saturday in 1957.

As you can see, it was pretty busy back then, even without the Trinity Shopping Centre!

  8. Leeds City Council budget: What it means for you

    Larry Budd

    Political reporter, BBC Radio Leeds

Council tax rises, job losses and more cuts to local services - it's not exactly a happy time to be working at a council anywhere in West Yorkshire.

    Judith Blake

All of them are in the process of setting budgets for the coming financial year, with Leeds City Council currently deciding on its approach.

Council leader Judith Blake (pictured) has presented a budget including a rise in council tax. That's going up by 3.99% - an average £47 a year rise for Band D properties.

And on top of that there are going to be 299 job losses at the council.

  9. West Yorkshire in pictures: Lunar landscape - as seen from Knottingley

Okay, so it's not a picture of West Yorkshire, it's a picture from West Yorkshire. It's still pretty good, all the same...

Our thanks to David Bellamy (not that one) for this great picture of the Snow Moon taken from Knottingley from last night.

  10. Leeds Museums' object of the week: All becomes clear

    Nick Wilmshurst

    BBC Local Live, Leeds

Earlier on I asked you what you thought this was:

    Object of the week

Well, I can reveal it's a receiver from one of the first ever telephones. It was, in fact, used in the UK's first ever phone conversation...

It's made from wood and dates back to the 1920s and was used by engineers between an attic and a workshop 30 yards away.

    The conversation went:

    "Are you there?"

"Yes, I am, will you count?"

     "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9"

"That's all right. Will you go through the alphabet."

    "A.B.C.D.--"

"Wait a minute while I adjust the screw."

Thankfully, phones no longer come with screws.
