"Part of the pressure is to deal with it and to stay calm, stay controlled and realise they have got four pool games, there is plenty of time and to start well," added Carling.

"I think there is huge pressure on England being the home World Cup for them and also being in the hardest pool the World Cup has ever seen.

"It’s important they start in a controlled composed way which will give them a lot of confidence.”

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon are currently giving a news conference at the Etihad ahead of their Champions League opener against Manchester City on Tuesday.

Andy Carroll is in contention for West Ham after recovering from a knee injury, but Alex Song, who has rejoined on loan, is out with an ankle problem. The Hammers' trio of new signings, Victor Moses, Michail Antonio and Nikica Jelavic, are all available.

Newcastle will be without striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is serving a three-match suspension. Defender Paul Dummett is also out after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Upton Park has been blanketed with sentimentality as it enters the final season. The players have looked stifled by it all, starting with defeats by Bournemouth and Leicester like shuffling sleepwalkers.

But the old ground really wakes up under floodlights. Now West Ham's home form might match their away successes.

With just one goal in eight away league games, Newcastle lack potency. They've averaged just over 30% of possession in their last three games.

If West Ham start well, the visitors might not see enough of the ball to get back into it.

How quickly things change in football. A week ago, Manchester City had Sergio Aguero fully fit with Wilfried Bony and Kelechi Iheanacho in reserve, but going into their first Champions League game against Juventus, Aguero is injured and Iheanacho, the hero at Crystal Palace, was not registered in the European squad.

On the other hand, the return of David Silva and Raheem Sterling is a huge boost and, although Manuel Pellegrini would not confirm that Kevin De Bruyne will start against the Italians, it looks likely that he will.

"We have to start picking up points at home, and I'm very confident because our reactions in the second halves of both games were good, and if we can do it from the start and cut out the silly mistakes, we will be alright."

Nobody is doubting the ability of Newcastle boss Steve McClaren - but now it is a case of him finding his best team and knitting it together. West Ham are proving very difficult to predict at the moment, winning away at Arsenal and Liverpool but losing both games at home, so I am probably best off going for a draw.

Niall O'Donnell: A 16-year old Wayne Rooney coming on in the 80th min to score the winner & end Arsenal's 30-game unbeaten league run.

A stolen bicycle worth €12,000 (£8,800) has been recovered from a second-hand shop in the Spanish city of Malaga, where it was offered for sale at 1/100th of its value - €120.  

Police were inspecting the shop for suspected stolen goods when they spotted the bicycle's "exceptional technical characteristics".

It belonged to a rider competing in the Vuelta a Espana race around Spain.

The bicycle was returned to its owner on Sunday, the final day of the race.

Stoke City's goalkeeper Jack Butland says their lowly position in the Premier League is only a "blip".

Stoke, who were beaten by Arsenal on Saturday, haven't won this season and have made their worst start since they were promoted in 2008.

Bangladesh police have stepped up their hunt for cricketer Shahadat Hossain, who has gone into hiding over claims he and his wife beat their 11-year-old maid, say officers investigating.

The 29-year-old paceman was suspended from all forms of cricket on Sunday as police investigate allegations he "tortured and abused" the maid who is undergoing treatment in hospital.

A police officer investigating the case said Hossain's mobile phone is now being tracked and officers are hopeful of arresting him soon.

"We've mobilised 10 mobile teams of officers to arrest him. We're making raids almost every day and are now tracking mobile phones," inspector Shafiqur Rahman told the AFP news agency.

Former Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann is a candidate for the vacant director of sport role at former Bundesliga giants Nuremberg, who are now languishing in Germany's second division.

Denver Police say a 42-year-old man fell 15ft over railings and suffered serious injuries.

Rotherham boss Steve Evans will not discuss speculation linking him to the vacant managerial position at Peterborough until after his side's visit to Brighton on Tuesday.

Norwich City manager Alex Neil has praised the impact of loan signing Matt Jarvis after his goal-scoring debut.

The winger joined from West Ham on deadline day and got the third goal in Saturday's 3-1 win over Bournemouth at Carrow Road.

"It gives us a different dimension," Neil told BBC Radio Norfolk. "We've got him on one side and Nathan [Redmond] on the other and it gives us two lads who can take the ball up the pitch and are both creative players as well."

Former Yorkshire and England captain Brian Close, who has died at the age of 84, became the youngest player ever to win a Test cap for England when he made his debut against New Zealand in 1949 as an 18-year-old.

Bath head coach Mike Ford has backed Sam Burgess to remain with the Aviva Premiership club for the next four years despite speculation linking the 26-year-old with a return to rugby league.

Reports in the Australian press have linked Burgess with a return next year to his former club South Sydney Rabbitohs, where two of his brothers - twins George and Tom - still play.

It’s said that the game is all about players and when they cross the white line the manager’s job is done. Not yesterday. Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri made changes, and effective ones.

At 2-0 down with 70 minutes played, Leicester’s Champions League hopes looked to be fizzling out. But the incredible comeback ensured second place is theirs and school playgrounds will be full of kids crowing that ‘City are seven points ahead of Chelsea’.

The latest golf rankings have been released and it could hardly be tighter at the top between the best two players in the world.

The good news for Rory McIlroy is that he's regained the top spot from Jordan Spieth, but only just.

Ron Springett, the England goalkeeper who waited more than 40 years for his World Cup winners' medal has died aged 80, following a short illness.

England's first choice keeper at the 1962 World Cup, Springett was a member of the 1966 World Cup winning squad but was kept out of the team by Gordon Banks.

It took 43 years for Springett's role to be acknowledged with silverware, until a policy change by Fifa saw the goalkeeper and his fellow non-playing squad members from the 1966 final presented with winners' medals in a Downing Street ceremony in 2009.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reports that Blues staff and the players' wives and partners are rumoured to be upset by Mourinho's treatment of first-team doctor Eva Carneiro, who has not worked since he criticised her for treating Eden Hazard during the 2-2 draw with Swansea in August.  

Chelsea play Maccabi Tel Aviv in the group stages of the Champions League on Wednesday and Mourinho believes it is the perfect opportunity for a response from his players.

It's been a shocking start to the season for the Blues - beaten 3-1 at Everton on Saturday - but bossJose Mourinhois not about to throw in the towel.

"The results are the worst in my career but I am coping well with the situation. I am not feeling pressure," insisted the Chelsea gaffer.

"I am the man for the job. I don't think there is better man who could come and do my job."

The other big Premier League game on Sunday featured Sunderland and Spurs. where Ryan Mason's late strike earned Tottenham their first win of the campaign.

The result leaves the home side bottom of the division, while Spurs are 12th.

Sunderland have now conceded 11 goals this season - though that's not quite as bad as the division's leakiest defence ... Chelsea, who've conceded 12.

Not surprisingly, opposite number Claudio Ranieriwas a tad happier.

"It was a fantastic second half. We know they played better early on but after 2-0 we started to play with our spirit and it was a very fantastic match," said the Leicester boss.

Leicester travel to second bottom side Stoke on Saturday in the Premier League, while Villa entertain West Brom on the same day.

Whiley, 23, won 6-4 0-6 6-1 against 31-year-old Kamiji of Japan in her first appearance in a major singles final.

Fellow Briton Gordon Reid, 23, won his second Grand Slam title as he paired with France's Stephane Houdet to clinch the men's wheelchair doubles.

The top seeds beat French pair Michael Jeremiasz and Nicolas Peifer 6-3 6-1.

In the video - posted on Twitter by Djokovic's wife - the US Open champ shouts 'This is Sparta' into the camera ... which, as any self-respecting film-goer knows, was Butler's famous line in the movie 300.

This was another breathtaking display of resilience from Novak Djokovic in the face of the most partisan crowd he has ever encountered in a Grand Slam final.

The outcome could have been different if Roger Federer had taken more than four of the 23 break points he created, but the Swiss was not able to rush this opponent in the way he did his others. 

Since Rod Laver in 1969, Jimmy Connors, Mats Wilander and Rafael Nadal have all won three Grand Slams in a single season, but only Federer - and now Djokovic - have done it at least twice.

Pat Cash, on what was a very pro-Fed crowd at Flushing Meadow.

Djokovic, who also won three Grand Slam titles four years ago, said: "It's been an incredible season, next to 2011 the best of my life.

"I'm enjoying this year more than I did any previous one because I'm a husband and a father, and that makes it sweeter."

Five-time champion Federer was playing his first US Open final since 2009, and drew one of the loudest cheers of the night when he told the crowd: "I'll see you guys next year."

The Swiss said it was "always tough" facing Djokovic, adding: "I think we both walk away from it knowing more about our games and more about each other. I'm pleased with where my game is at."

First the big news from overnight though - and it's bad news for those old romantics among us who would have quite liked Roger Federer to become the third oldest man to win a Grand Slam.

The 34-year-old Swiss was beaten in four dramatic sets by world number one Novak Djokovic, who won his second US Open and 10th Grand Slam title.

The Serb won 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-4 in New York, and ends the year with three of the four tennis majors.
