  3. Police 'kidding themselves' over Hillsborough

    Jenny Coleman

    Reporter, BBC Local Live

Barry Devonside, whose 18-year-old son Christopher died at Hillsborough, believes only a handful of police officers did a good job on the day of the tragedy.

    Hillsborough 15th April 1989

He was responding to a message, posted on a website for South Yorkshire Police's retired officers, which said they had served dedicated and courageous careers.

Mr Devonside said: "I saw police officers endeavouring to give mouth-to-mouth or CPR and those people were excellent. The sad thing is there were only a few, maybe on two hands you could count them. There were over 200 police officers walking around that pitch aimlessly. No direction, no leadership."

Rick Naylor, Secretary of  the South Yorkshire branch of the National Association of Retired Police Officers said in the post, later removed, that officers should be proud on their work, but Mr Devonside responded: "He's kidding himself."

    Len Tingle

    Political Editor, BBC Look North

Voters in parts of Yorkshire could be forgiven for leaving behind piles of nervously chewed pencil stubs at their polling stations on 5 May.

Research shows that stress levels peak at the point where the pencil is poised to put a cross in the box against the name of the chosen candidate.

This year's local council and police commissioner elections could see even more confusion with some Yorkshire voters being asked to make up to five choices.
