  3. Fractured gas pipe caused fatal Haxby house explosion

A fatal gas explosion at a house in York in February was not caused by any criminal action or breaches of health and safety law, an investigation has concluded.

    Haxby explosion scene

Paul Wilmott, 63, died at his home on Springwood in Haxby when it was wrecked by the blast on 19 February.

The investigation, by North Yorkshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive, has found that the cause of the explosion was a fractured gas pipe buried in the property's concrete floor. It resulted in an uncontrolled gas escape which ignited.

No further action is to be taken and a report will be passed to HM Coroner for the inquest into Mr Wilmott's death, which will be held at a later date.

  4. Whitby Goth Weekend 'disrespecting graves of Whitby residents' ancestors'

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live

A petition calling for Whitby's famous graveyard to close during the town's Goth Weekend has gained nearly 500 signatures.

A woman started the change.org page last week, saying graves were being used as "props for a cheap photo opportunity".

She wants a temporary closure order brought in at St Mary's Church every year during the bi-annual event.

    St Mary's Church

A statement from Whitby Goth Weekend organisers said: "Whitby Goth Weekend is a music festival that takes place at the Spa Pavilion in Whitby.

"We're confused as to why people began to visit the town to promenade and be photographed in fancy dress outfits during our event, as this isn't something we've ever encouraged or advertised."

    St Mary's Church

The petition, launched by Bristol resident AJ Stratton, acknowledges the positive effect the festival has had on Whitby, but says families who visit the graveyard regularly need to have their privacy respected.

He had a unique charisma which seemed to capture everyone's attention and a natural ability to light up any room, both qualities will be sorely missed." from Parents of Ajvir Singh Sandhu
