  3. Q&A: Sheffield steel cups heading for Glastonbury

    Bethan Bell

    BBC News Online

We've heard this week that revellers at the Glastonbury Festival are to be provided with steel drinking cups smelted in Sheffield.

    Steel cup for Glastonbury

With that in mind, I've been looking at some of the questions being asked about giving bacchanalian band-lovers metal beakers.

    These questions include:

    • Will these steel cups make my beer taste funny?
    • Will they help the British steel industry?
    • Will people with metal fillings be able to use them?

Find out the answers to these and many more pressing questions about Sheffield's role in Glastonbury 2016 right here.

  4. DNA 'sat nav' helps Sheffield Uni academics predict origins of Yiddish

The origin of Yiddish, the millennium-old language of Ashkenazic Jews, is something which linguists have discussed for decades.

Now, a pioneering tool – the Geographic Population Structure (GPS) – which converts DNA data into its ancestral coordinates, has helped scientists pinpoint that the DNA of Yiddish speakers could have originated from four ancient villages in northeastern Turkey.

The research, led by Doctor Eran Elhaik (pictured) from the University of Sheffield, suggests the Yiddish language was originated by Iranian and Ashkenazic Jews as they traded on the Silk Road.

    Doctor Eran Elhaik
Quote Message: Yiddish is such a wonderful and complex language, which was inappropriately called 'Bad German' by both its native and non-native speakers because the language consists of made-up German words and a non-German grammar." from Doctor Eran Elhaik

  5. Sheffield Council promises talks over fees hike for Sharrow Vale Market

Sheffield City Council insists it's willing to talk after the organisers of Sharrow Vale Market said they couldn't afford a hike in fees.

Previously they've had to pay the council £25 to put on the event - now they've been warned it'll cost almost £800.

    Crowds at market

But Tom Finnegan-Smith, of Sheffield City Council, says:

Quote Message: We are happy to discuss the arrangements with the organiser to ensure continued success. We have always had to make a Traffic Regulation Notice that allows stalls on the highway and for the temporary closure of Sharrow Vale Road. The cost of doing this is changing because the previous fee did not cover costs. We have given the organisers some options to think about before the next event in July." from Tom Finnegan-Smith Sheffield City Council

Matt Gladstone, who heads Enterprising Barnsley as part of Barnsley Council, says:

Quote Message: We're particularly pleased to have attracted so many new companies to the borough. It's good to see that national and international businesses looking for somewhere to grow are liking what they see in Barnsley." from Matt Gladstone Enterprising Barnsley
