  1. Goodbye for now

    Darth Vader

That's the end of today's Music News LIVE but scroll down for news on this year's Mercury prize, a new album from Blondie and Lauryn Hill on the greatness of her lateness.

And we'll leave you with news Radiohead have recorded the theme for The Empire Strikes Back!

...well not really, but someone has produced an incredibly cool mash-up of Radiohead's shelved theme tune to the James Bond film Spectre with the imagined opening credits to the second Star Wars movie (well episode V if you want to get all nerdy about it).

It looks pretty awesome, head over to Vimeo for a look.

    See you tomorrow...

  2. Justin Timberlake to perform at Eurovision

    Justin Timberlake

Yes, this is a real announcement!  No, it doesn't mean Justin Timberlake will be competing at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Instead he'll perform his new track Can't Stop The Feeling during the interval at Saturday's final in Stockholm.

He's making Eurovision history too, as it's the first time a non-contestant and global superstar has ever performed. Organisers have called JT's booking "an honour and inspiration".

"This is a fantastic opportunity, we are very happy and excited that Justin Timberlake will perform his new song together with his band in our show," says Sven Stojanovic, the show's producer.

"It makes it extra special that the Swedish songwriters Max Martin and Shellback have co-written and co-produced the song together with Justin Timberlake."

  3. Rihanna announces scholarship programme

    Rihanna

Singer-turned-philanthropist Rihanna has announced a new education scholarship programme through her charitable foundation.

It will be open to students from Barbados, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Guyana, Jamaica, or the US who have been accepted to study in the States.

“To be able to give the gift of an education is actually an honour,” she said. “Higher education will help provide perspective, opportunities and learning to a group of kids who really deserve it. I am thrilled to be able to do this.”

According to the charity's website, it was founded by Rihanna in 2012 to honour her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite.

Meanwhile, it's a happy anniversary to the singer, who had her very first US number one single this week with SOS.

  4. Kanye West spoils Kim Kardashian for Mother's Day

    Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

It was Mother's Day at the weekend. Relax, you didn't miss it, it was only in the US (the British one was back in March - maybe you did miss that?).

Kanye West treated Mrs Kanye aka Kim Kardashian to a special performance by a guest orchestra in their very massive, very white and very bare living room.

  5. How to make it as a music journalist...

Close up of Rolling Stone magazine

This is a little akin to an ageing boxer teaching a young fighter how to punch only to be knocked out cold during a sparring session (or pick something different if you don't like boxing analogies...)

But here is BBC Music's guide to becoming a music journalist..

Read about how Jann Wenner teased the ultimate warts-and-all interview out of John Lennon and about how the trailblazing women in the macho world of rock got started.

  6. The Stone Roses postpone gigs as drummer Reni injured

    Ian Brown

The Stone Roses have had to cancel two shows in Tokyo at the start of next month, after drummer Reni fractured his ribs.

A statement from promoters Creative Man says:

Quote Message: The Stone Roses are very sorry to have to cancel their two proposed concerts at the Budokan. Reni has had an accidental fall and fractured two ribs, his doctor has told him to rest for at least a month. Unfortunately this means that the band are unable to fulfill their planned performances in Japan.

The band adds they are "extremely disappointed" and "hope to be able to return to Japan soon".

The forthcoming world tour is scheduled to hit the UK on 15 June, with four dates at Manchester's Etihad Stadium.

Meanwhile there's excitement from Stone Roses fans online after one claimed on Twitter he was told, in person, by bassist Mani that a new track would be released this week. Read about the speculation on the NME blog

  7. Kygo on quitting his degree to DJ

He's credited with creating 'the next EDM' (that's 'tropical house' FYI) in this week's NME, but Norweigan DJ and producer Kygo originally had designs on both football and finance.

The 24-year-old quit an Economics degree at university in Edinburgh to pursue his music dreams, going on to become the fastest act to have his music streamed a billion times on Spotify.

The man behind dance hits like Firestone has been chatting to BBC Breakfast ahead of the release of his new album Cloud Nine on Friday, which features collaborations with Tom Odell and John Legend.

Kygo shared his feelings about streaming services, why it's important to play a real musical instrument and how his music career got started:

  10. Public to choose one album on Mercury prize shortlist

    Benjamin Clementine

For the first time, a public vote will be used to advance an album through to a shorter shortlist for this year's Mercury Prize.

Only six albums will make it through to the ceremony on 15 September, rather than the 12 albums of previous years - as just announced by Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music.

The 12-strong 'longlist' will be revealed on the station on 4 August, with fans then invited to choose one album to proceed to the final via an online vote.

The judging panel, which this year includes BBC presenters Jarvis Cocker, Jamie Cullum and DJ Annie Mac will select the next five and will still ultimately decide on the winner.

The competition has in the past been criticised for a lack of transparency when it comes to selecting the winner and has failed to make much of an impact on sales for some winners.

The six shortlisted artists will perform at the final and there will be a one-off collaboration marking the ceremony's 25th anniversary.

Last year's prize was won by Benjamin Clementine (pictured above).

  12. Blondie's new album to feature Charlie XCX, Sia and Johnny Marr

    Blondie's Debbie Harry

Nearly 40 years after their debut, Blondie have a new album in the pipeline and it's set to feature collaborations with a host of music stars - from Charli XCX to Sia and Johnny Marr.

According to i-D, guitarist Chris Stein revealed the news on Charli's Beats 1 radio show The Candy Shop, telling the singer - who has herself contributed two songs - that the record is finished except for Debbie Harry's vocals.

Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr is also involved, while Sia's contribution has "an amazing chorus" and the album could even end up featuring rappers such as Kanye West and Ludacris.

Quote Message: We had a phone conversation with Kanye, Debbie's met him once or twice, and he's so nice. I went into it not knowing what to expect because of all the stuff you know, but he was great. He was very humble and nice, I like what he does. from Chris Stein

Pop star Selena Gomez opened her world tour in Las Vegas on Friday (6 May), with crystal-studded bodysuits, masquerade masks, thigh-high gold boots and a setlist boasting 20 songs.

Among them was a new track, Feel Me, a sultry mid-tempo song that opens with the lyrics: “No one loves you like I love you / I never cheated, never lied / I never put no one above you / I gave you space and time / And now you're telling me you miss me..."

Selena previously told us that she'd started working on the follow-up to last year's smash hit album, Revival, and would finish it while she was on the road.

The tour comes to the UK in November.

  14. Lauryn Hill promises to make it up to fans after two-hour gig delay

    Lauryn Hill

US singer Lauryn Hill has promised fans in Atlanta, Georgia that she will make it up to them after she was two-hours late going on stage and ended up performing for just 40 minutes.

In a Facebook post, she blamed the delay on "aligning my energy with the time, taking something that isn't easily classified or contained, and trying to make it available for others".

She added: "For every performance that I've arrived to late, there have been countless others where I've performed in excess of two hours, beyond what I am contracted to do, pouring everything out on the stage."

Quote Message: Because I care so deeply about the artistic process, I scrutinize, have perfectionist tendencies, and want space made for spontaneity, which is not an easy process, with the many moving parts on the road. Some days we are more successful than others re time.
  15. Axl Rose makes his debut with AC/DC

Axl Rose and Angus Young perform in Lisbon

Thousands of fans allegedly requested refunds when it was announced Axl Rose would replace an incapacitated Brian Johnson on AC/DC's world tour... but it turns out they were wrong.

Reviews for Rose's first show with the rock group, which was held in Lisbon on Saturday, have been emphatically positive. Here's a sample.

    • "From the opening salvo of Rock or Bust, Shoot to Thrill and Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be, it was clear that, musically at least, the GN'R man is a great fit for AC/DC." - Mark Sutherland, Rolling Stone
    • "The Guns N’ Roses singer might have been confined to a ‘throne’, but he delivered a masterly first appearance fronting AC/DC." - Michael Hann, The Guardian
    • "Being out of his element seemed good for the famously egotistic singer." - Kevin Raub, Billboard
  16. Mumford and Little Mix protest against touts

    Little Mix

Marcus Mumford, his sons and Little Mix have joined a campaign encouraging fans to "stand up" to ticket touts.

They're asking people to sign a petition, calling on the government to debate tougher penalties for websites and resellers who inflate the cost of tickets on the secondary market.

More than 12,000 people have already signed the petition - organised by Twickets, a fan-to-fan site that sells unwanted concert tickets at face value or less (with a 10% service fee).

One Direction made the site their official ticket reseller on last year's On The Road Again Tour. Unsurprisingly, they've also tweeted a link to the petition, using the #ToutsOut.

If 100,000 people sign the document, it will trigger a parliamentary debate.
