The deaths of sperm whales off the coast of Norfolk will be discussed by experts at an international conference being held at London Zoo.

The animals washed up in January and February of this year.
Rob Deaville from the Cetaceans Stranding Investigation Programme says the investigation is still on-going with partners in Europe and while it still doesn't know why the creatures took a wrong turn into the North Sea, it's unlikely pollution was the cause.

Stuart Layden, 33, had appealed against his conviction of 2013 for the murder of Ian Church, 40, outside a pub in Great Yarmouth the previous year.
Today a judge at Norwich Crown Court sentenced him to life, to serve a minimum term of eight years and 357 days.

Ian Church, 40, died after a disturbance outside the Bricklayer's Arms pub on Nelson Road Central in the early hours of Saturday, 5 May 2012.
Stuart Layden, 33, formerly of South Quay, was convicted of his murder following a trial in April 2013.Layden appealed against his conviction and was granted a retrial In September 2015, but the jury in that trial was discharged and a second re-trial began this month.
Layden, who has already served time in prison, was today sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of eight years and 357 days by the judge at Norwich Crown Court.

Rob Dinley, who runs Dixies Tea Stall at the car park, said he closed temporarily, losing about £500 in takings, because he felt there was a danger to his and the public's safety.

Second public inquiry into Heacham homes gets under way

A second public inquiry starts today into a proposal to build a care home and 70 houses in Heacham.
There have been several watered-down bids to build in the village since the original application in 2013 for 200 homes, a pub and business units.

Broadland Housing Association and developer Townsfolk now have a smaller proposal to build on land off School Road, saying there's a demand for the scheme.
Many people living in the village remain opposed to the development, arguing it has taken enough housing already and that this scheme would be in the wrong place:

Pet charity footing vets' bills urges owners to take out insurance

One of Norfolk's animal charities says it is having to foot the bill for expensive operations when pet owners can't afford them.

Vets will give essential first aid when animals are in trouble, but won't do expensive procedures unless someone can pay or has insurance to cover costs.
Charity PACT Animal Sanctuary at Hingham says too many owners are turning to it for help with vet bills.
Part of its deal for meeting these costs involves the pet being re-homed by the charity. It's urging owners to be more responsible and take out insurance if they have an animal.
Dr David Waterhouse says although the vast majority of people looking for fossils in the cliffs at places like West Runton are careful, he's concerned that a handful who hack away at the rocky deposits are adding to the erosion.
He says the Museums Service wants to educate people to ensure that fossil-hunting along Norfolk’s fragile cliff line stays safe and sustainable.

Two women attacked and injured by couple in King's Lynn

Two women were taken to hospital after an altercation in King's Lynn on Saturday night with a man and a woman.
The victims were near the Chopsticks Noodle Bar on Broad Street at about 23:15 when the assault took place, leaving both women with injuries requiring medical treatment.
The man and woman are said to be in their 20s and both had blonde hair. Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them.
