  5. Nick Menza bandmates pay tribute to 'kind, generous' drummer

    Nick Menza

The bandmates of former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza (pictured above) have paid tribute to the drummer, who died of a heart attack during a gig at the weekend.

    Chris Poland from OHM said:

Quote Message: There are no words... just to describe what a great guy he was, let alone his creative ability and amazing talent. Not enough words to describe. Just devastated right now. When I was recently in the hospital he was on the phone with my wife the whole time, just begging her to make her dinner, asking, "Can I go get you guys anything? Do you want me to go shopping?" Who does that? You know, there's not enough words to describe.

Robby 'Pag' Pagliari said Menza was "such a kind generous human being and great dad".

He added: "In a year we've lost so many talented people - we just lost another one."

  7. Stormzy, The Temper Trap and Mystery Jets close The Great Escape

    Sarah Jane Griffiths

    Music News LIVE reporter

    Stormzy

Stormzy helped bring The Great Escape's energetic run of more than 450 gigs in three days to a close in Brighton over the weekend - headlining Saturday night's Spotlight show at the Brighton Dome.

The Guardian called the set "masterful", giving it four stars, as did The Telegraph, who called the Grime MC "articulate and irreverent".

While showcasing hundreds of new artists from Clean Cut Kid to female four-piece The Big Moon, day three of the event also saw the UK live return of Mystery Jets and London-based Aussies The Temper Trap.

    The Temper Trap

We caught up with Toby and Dougie from the band ahead of their Amazon Live: Front Row show at The Old Market who told us they were "excited" to be back with their first new material since 2012.

Quote Message: It's been a while! We just came back from Australia where we did the first four shows. We felt great just to be back on the road after such a long time. from Toby from The Temper Trap
    Toby from The Temper Trap
Quote Message: I don’t know if it’s because we’re just desperate to play some new stuff but so far it feels good. It’s nice to have a bit of a feeling of anticipation. When you play the same songs for so long, you kind of go on autopilot, but with these songs, you get a little bit nervous and I think you need a bit of nervous energy. It feels fresh and exciting again. from Dougie from The Temper Trap

The new tracks went down well, but fans definitely approved of their decision to close their set with 2009's Sweet Disposition.

Other highlights included some special dance moves from Australian band Gang of Youths - who've been likened to Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem and played the Concorde 2 twice on Saturday.

Sadly rumours of a secret Royal Blood show failed to materialise, although the band were spotted checking out several shows including Blossoms (who we chatted to on Friday ahead of their headline set).

    Jake Bugg

Jake Bugg was a surprise addition to the line-up though, something Izzy Bizu confided she was "bummed" to miss as his shows clashed with her own.

"I am a really big fan, he’s great - but I think he’ll be at loads of other festivals I am, so it's fine!

"I was here last year and it was a really sentimental gig for me. It was one of the first times I ever played with my band who I'm still with now and they're really cool guys so it's a really nice gig for me to do."

  10. Bataclan survivor responds to EODM singer Jesse Hughes interview

    NME

    Jesse Hughes

One of the survivors of the Paris terror attacks, which saw ninety people die at an Eagles of Death Metal show, has written a response to the latest interview with singer Jesse Hughes, in which he again suggests venue staff were complicit in the atrocity.

Speaking to the right-wing Taki magazine, Hughes said: "There's no denying the terrorists were already inside, and they had to get in somehow.

"During the shooting I went outside and the backstage door was propped open. How did that happen?"

The comments got the band thrown off the bill at two French festivals.

The singer had previously apologised for comments suggesting some staff were involved.

Now, writing in Louder Than War, survivor Tony Scott said:

Quote Message: There is a rapport between a band and its fans, some of which are dedicated followers. They already feel like they know him. This rapport is strengthened still as Hughes is a fellow survivor and the compassion extended in the community of survivors is also extended to him. Comments in the media like his are a stomach punch to those fans, especially when they are still dealing with their own trauma. He is alienating the very people who helped him get where he is.

  14. David Bowie and Metallica ballet in the works

    Broadway World

    David Bowie

The Music Hall in Detroit has commissioned a new ballet in tribute to David Bowie.

The piece, performed by Complexions Contemporary Ballet, is due to premiere on 18 June.

According to the company, it will "juxtapose the dramatic and ever evolving work of David Bowie and the primal aggressive and majestic Heavy Metal of the biggest hard rock band on the planet, Metallica".

The new ballet apparently uses "an array of his hits over these four decades and lays a visual imprint of his - style, character, intensity, androgyny and his restless invention as an artist and creates a Rock Opera style production in his honour".

The costumes were designed by Valentino and the set was made by the designer behind the Batman movie sets.

Coppola was brought in to turn around the fortunes of the ailing opera house, which has played second fiddle to La Scala in Milan.

The 15-night run has nearly sold out.
