  2. Weather: Dry at first but rain on way

    Dry at first with bright spells this evening, but cloud increasing overnight with patchy rain spreading in from the west.   

    Heavy rain will move in after midnight in light to moderate south to southwesterly winds.

    Minimum temperature: 12C (53F).

    Saturday will start cloudy with perhaps a few spots of light rain early on, but drier periods through the morning and even into the afternoon.

  3. Four sentenced over migrant exploitation offences

    Four people have been jailed for offences relating to the exploitation of migrant workers in the Fens.

    Juris Valujevs, 37, and Oksana Valujeva, 35, of Turbus Road, King's Lynn; Lauma Vankova, 27, of Creswell Street, King's Lynn and Ivars Mezals (below), 30, of St Bartholomew's Road, Reading, were found guilty of conspiracy to acquire criminal property following a trial at Huntingdon Crown Court in March.

    Vankova, Valujeva and Valujevs were also found guilty of assisting an immigration offence, which police say was connected to arranging sham marriages.  

    Late this afternoon, at the same court, Valujevs was jailed for a total of eight and a half years. 

    Vankova and Valujeva were each jailed for six years, and Mezals was jailed for three years.

  4. Rocket man aims to get record back

    Amateur rocket engineer Ben Jarvis from Norfolk wants to break the European altitude record - currently 70,000ft - about 13 miles (21km).The rocket he's building will be able to reach 2,000 mph (3,200 km/h) in one second.In 2000 he broke the European altitude record, achieving a record height of 30,000ft (9,144m), but a team from the Netherlands recently broke that record and now he wants it back.

  5. Council to bid for £1m to start third river crossing work

    A third river crossing for Great Yarmouth has moved a step closer today after Norfolk County Council's environment, development and transport committee voted to bid for a government grant of nearly £1m to get work going.

    Committee chairman Martin Wilby said: "The third river crossing would be a huge benefit for Yarmouth, Norfolk and nationally, bringing prosperity and reducing journey times and congestion. 

    "It's estimated the new bridge would cost approximately £140m to construct and the county council is keen to see the government support the scheme."

  6. NHS boss called to update council on staffing progress

    Staffing in the NHS in Norfolk will be discussed at a meeting of a county council overview committee next week.

    Health Education England (HEE) will be updating councillors on progress to improve the supply of NHS staff. 

    Ross Collett, head of HEE's Norfolk and Suffolk Workforce Partnership, will update the committee on the outcome of 2015-16 workforce initiatives and discuss the current challenges and plans for the future at a County Hall meeting in Norwich.

    Members of the public are welcome to attend.

  7. Museum fundraisers get £119,700 training boost from Heritage Lottery Fund

    A further grant of £119,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund will extend a training scheme in fundraising for museum staff in Norfolk.

    The new funding will help more staff in Norfolk to benefit from private funding sources and partnerships through the SHAREd Enterprise Project which started in 2014.

    Miranda Rowlands, project officer from Norfolk Museums Service, welcomed the extra funding and the confidence shown by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

  8. Travel: Train delays between Norwich and London continue

    Delays on Abellio Greater Anglia trains between Liverpool Street and Norwich are continuing into the evening. 

    A signal failure at Stowmarket which began at lunchtime caused delays of an hour to services but the company says this has moderated to delays of up to 30 minutes.

  9. Watch: Model aircraft show cleared for take-off

    About 120 aircraft will be on display at the Large Model Flying Show at Tibenham Airfield this weekend - everything from World War One biplanes, to the latest jets.

    After a crash at the Shoreham air show last year, rules for model aircraft shows like Tibenham have also been tightened.

    Promoter James Ladell said: “We’re regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority and we’ve had to tighten up on everything: the flight lines, the way we fly, speed, everything. We were safe before, but we’re even safer now.”

    Flying starts at 10:00 on both Saturday and Sunday.

  10. 'Inadequate' learning services now achieve 'good' rating from Ofsted

    Community learning services in Norfolk have achieved a "good" rating after a recent Ofsted inspection, following a previous "inadequate" label.

    Inspectors said they were impressed by the new vision, strategic objectives and operating model for the service, formerly known as adult education. 

    Helen Wetherall, interim head, said: "This is a fantastic outcome brought about by a mammoth team effort. Our next goal is to be an 'outstanding' service and we will be working closely with our learners, partners, governors and staff to achieve this."

  11. Davis Cup trophy tour hopes to attract young tennis players

    The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) hopes the visit of the Davis Cup to Norfolk will inspire more young people to play the game.

    Great Britain beat Belgium in the autumn to take the trophy for the first time in 79 years and today it is appearing at the Sportspark at the University of East Anglia before continuing to Ipswich. 

    The LTA has launched a new programme called Tennis for Kids to inspire the next generation of players. Norfolk has about 20 coaches delivering the programme at 27 clubs.

  12. Model aircraft take to skies over Norfolk

    Model aircraft enthusiasts from all over the country are in Norfolk this weekend for theLarge Model Flying Show at Tibenham Airfield.

    Six thousand people are expected to watch the aircraft in action. Some of the jets can reach speeds of up to 250mph (400 km/h) an hour.

    Mark Hinton (pictured), from Thetford, one of the top pilots in the country, said: "It’s an obsession I’ve had since I was a boy. I love the sound of the jet engines and the smell."

  13. Davis Cup comes to Norwich

    Great Britain won the "World Cup of Tennis" last year for the first time since 1936.

    And today the famous trophy is on display at Sportspark at the University of East Anglia.

  16. Academy acts over GCSE coursework 'irregularities' to preserve 'integrity'

    A science teacher at a Norfolk academy who was suspended over allegations of "irregularities" in relation to GCSE coursework has resigned after an investigation.

    Cromer Academy principal Dr Geoff Baker said he was alerted to a problem by a student and "the member of staff accepted the findings in full and resigned". 

    He said: "The parents of the students involved have been contacted. An extension has been granted from the exam board and the few students that this concerned have now completed necessary work. 

    "At our school integrity is prized - it is something we seek to engender in our students and it is something that as staff we seek to model for them. 

    "Unfortunately, this member of staff's actions were not in keeping with the high standards that we set."

  17. Charges over pizza delivery driver death

    Two men from Cambridgeshire and Norfolk have been charged with killing a pizza delivery driver in Peterborough.

    Ali Qasemi (pictured), 45, was delivering food when he was attacked on Shrewsbury Avenue in the early hours of 8 May. He died in hospital two days later.

    Mark Lintott, 29, of Shrewsbury Avenue, Peterborough, and Joel Lawson, 25, of Goodhale Road, Norwich, were arrested and charged with manslaughter this morning.

    They have also been charged with robbery, and Mr Lawson has been charged with possessing cannabis.

    They are due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates' Court this afternoon.

  18. Science teacher resigns over GCSE coursework claims at academy

    A science teacher at a Norfolk academy has resigned over claims too much help was given to pupils with coursework.

    Cromer Academy, run by the Inspiration Trust, said it had carried out an investigation. 

    The academy said only a small number of GCSE students were affected and that they have to re-submit their work.

    We'll have a statement from the school shortly.

  19. Boy's 'unrepentant' rapist sentenced to 12 years

    A man found guilty of numerous rapes of a boy in Great Yarmouth in the 1990s must serve at least 12 years, 11 of them in jail, before being released on a one-year supervised licence.

    Michael Ryles, 68, preyed on his victim, now in his 30s, but denied the claims when he appeared at King's Lynn Crown Court.

    Mr Recorder Justin Rouse said his sentence would be in the upper bracket for the offence because Ryles had shown no remorse; had subjected his victim to severe psychological trauma and the crime was a total betrayal of trust.

    The attacks took place when the boy had been between nine and 11 years old. He was given money, cannabis and a bike to keep quiet.

  20. Man found guilty of raping boy but acquitted of gross indecency

    A 68-year-old man had been found guilty of raping a boy in the 1990s but acquitted of a charge of gross indecency.

    King's Lynn Crown Court

    The victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told police he had been raped by Michael Ryles numerous times between the ages of nine and 11.

    Ryles, of Sidney Close, Yarmouth, denied the claims, saying the victim had made them up. Sentencing is due later today.
