A competition for towns and cities in northern England to host a government-funded exhibition promoting northern art, culture and design has opened.

The Great Exhibition of the North will get £5m, with "public and private funders" providing any further budget.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport said a £15m "legacy fund" to attract cultural investment in the North would also be provided.

The competition will run until June, with the winner announced in October.

Police are investigating the cause of a crash in Keighley in which a 79-year-old-man was killed. 

The man was driving a black Peugeot 207 along Skipton Road towards Keighley on Saturday when it left the road and hit a wall near Utley Cemetery.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

Scattered, locally heavy, showers are likely to mostly fizzle out through the evening. 

However, low cloud will roll into the west with the risk of some light rain and drizzle affecting Pennine areas. Elsewhere, dry with some patchy mist.

Former Wakefield Girls' High School student Katherine Kelly has been cast as a teacher in the new Doctor Who spin-off show, Class.

The actor, who has previously starred in Coronation Street, will be joined by four newcomers who will play sixth-formers at Coal Hill School - Greg Austin, Sophie Hopkins Fady Elsayed and Vivian Oparah.

Award-winning Class creator Patrick Ness said: "How lucky we are to get Katherine Kelly.

A 55-year-old man has died after his car hit a wall in Bradford this morning.

At about 10am, a grey Fiat Punto was travelling along Bowling Hall Road towards Rooley Lane, when it left the road, police said.

The driver was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

Farmers shot at least 305 dogs in the past six years for frightening their livestock, an investigation by BBC Radio 4's Farming Today has found. 

The figures, provided by police forces in England and Wales, suggested an average of one dog a week was being shot. The highest number, 54, was in West Yorkshire.

Farming Today asked police for reports of a dog being shot on private land for worrying sheep between January 2010 and December 2015. 

Of the 43 forces in England and Wales 27 provided figures:

Householders in areas of West Yorkshire affected by flooding will be able to take advantage of a new insurance scheme from today.

The Flood Re initiative is being funded by existing insurance companies and is designed to keep premiums down.

Former Conservative MP, Mark Hoban, is its chairman and has admitted to BBC Radio Leeds that premiums for customers unaffected by flooding may have to rise too.

Benjamin Robinson, 30, of Harrogate Road, Bradford and Daniel Hutchinson, 24, of Damon Avenue, Bradford, took posing and grinning selfies after the thefts.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested after a woman's body was found, West Yorkshire Police said.

The body was found at an address on Soaper Lane, Shelf near Halifax, just before 21:00 BST on Saturday.

Officers were called by the ambulance service and the death is being treated as suspicious, said police.
