Mo Farah wanted to be a footballer, says ex PE teacher

The man who introduced Mo Farah to running as an 11-year-old, ex PE teacher Alan Watkinson, says the track star wanted to be a footballer as a youngster, rather than a runner.

Mr Watkinson, who was also Mo's best man when he got married in 2010, says he remembers "a fighter, a competitor" when he first arrived, but one who "had no command of the English language at all."

And he recalls how Mo was always determined to be the best that he could be. But running was not his first love, Mr Watkinson added, "he fought against it a little bit for a couple of years, he wanted to play football, he just wanted to play football.

"He didn't quite get, in the first instance, what athletics was all about. I think he's a convert now."
